I'll be doing approx 20k km a year, and I'll be looking to get one around June. Probably better off with diesel if Im doing that much driving I presume?

Normally I'd say petrol for small mileage, but the petrol options in the budget on those particular cars aren't up to much. The 1.6 petrol is old, noisy and very thirsty but it's not a bad engine to go for what it is. As long as you don't buy a BXE or similar the 1.9tdi is probably the better insurance friendly-ish option.

But you really don't need a diesel. Its less than 50 quid a week at a lowly 30 to the gallon. Look at some other makes.

Infairness petrols in general would be cheaper to maintain as generally when something goes wrong it's not that expensive to fix. But then there are plenty of petrols out there that are dogs and end up being expensive to run.

Plus there is a lot to be said for diesel economy I'm so use to it now but 50mpg vs 35 mpg is a noticeable difference in fuel cost plus diesel is cheaper to buy.

But the diesel car is more expensive to buy meaning you really need to work out the costs. There's no one size fits all, and it depends on type of use for a lot of diesels.

I may look into the 1.6 petrol so. Cheaper tax and cheaper insurance, along with cheaper to buy.

I did look into other cars like a Toyota Corolla and a Ford Focus, but the Corolla was a complete no no from the insurance company, and I want to change from Ford now

Anyhow, it'll probably be June until I go to buy anything!

Petrol would be cheaper to maintain alright, but my sister had a petrol engine before and she didnt regret getting rid of it for a diesel as the diesel was much more economical.

The fact that diesel is cheaper than petrol is also a huge plus :D

It's a couple of euro a tank. I wouldn't get overly hung up on it unless you're claiming the VAT back or a monkey taxing it as a commercial for private use. Its the price of a cup of coffee at the end of the day. If your driving is tipping about the diesel economy is barely noticeable.

I drive a petrol civic at the weekends and it definitely is lighter on juice around town than the diesel car. Nothing calculated or scientific but it's definitely not drinking to the same degree and the heater works sooner too:D

From June to September I'll be driving to work and back everyday and then at the weekends a few of us have a few trips planned for around the country so the car will be going that way too!
From September on it'll only be driving me to college on a Sunday night, tipping around the city during the week and then back home on a Friday. Still be clocking up a bit of mileage as I'll be working at the weekends and have to make various trips.

Have my heart set on either a Golf or an A3. Anything smaller is out of the question due to personal/family reasons (The likes of a Micra or Fiesta would break like a biscuit in a crash)

Depends what kind of driving you are doing, I do roughly 13000 miles per year, work is only 11 miles away, R road and n4, I only have one stop sign on the way there and one busy roundabout so petrol suits me down to the ground, if I was doing longer mway miles then diesel would probably be better. I have had a 1.9 tdi a3(130bhp) a few years bad and now have the same model but with a 1.8t(150bhp) on the same route the diesel did 43mpg, petrol does 35mpg and it's much cheaper to service and much nicer to drive. So it's not all about mileage, there's a number of factors to consider. My sister just had to get her smax's DPF cleared due to it only ever doing the school run! So modern diesels have there pitfalls unlike what some say.

Well since its a car I doubt commercial tax will come into it. Not sure what that comment was about tbh. But as for tax it's 673 euro to 560euro tax iirc not a huge difference. But you are probably right that if he is only doing constant sort trips the economy of diesel won't be much better. Where as if you are doing long trips just not that often to make up the 20k in it will be a noticeable difference.

Also I can't say I've ever seen a huge price difference between petrol and diesels when it comes to mk5 golfs but the petrol is a bit cheaper to buy.

Its not unknown for people to claim the refund from diesel that may not necessarily have been used in the line of business. If that was a motivation then there might be a case for a diesel if you wanted to exploit it.

Ah ok I didn't realise that. Is the 1.6 engine in the mk5 golf a reliable engine as I think the 1.4 is good for reliability but just very dead making the 1.6 a better option in terms of power. When did that 1.6 actually come out I wonder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,295 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

1.4 and 1.6 VAG petrols are gutless.

Regardless of mileage id have the 1.9tdi which doesnt suffer dpf problems regardless.

1.8t petrol in a perfect world though

I remember you saying that, 80k miles a year!!! That's doing 220 miles a day every single day of the year!

Your petrol bill must have kept our country afloat...:D

Ah sure it was a difficult job but i managed! :pac: the reason was mainly me and the ex would wake up on the weekends and be like sure where can we go today? Pick somewhere and just go, couple that with living in cork and coming home each weekend, along with a few trips up north, it doesn't be long adding up!

    Guys, question.
I was just told that Honda have sent me a recall letter for an airbag inflator check.
The problem is that the car is abroad with work etc so it won't be in Ireland for a long time.
Do you think that the recall can be done in another EU country?

Anyone know how to tell if the 1.6 engined 00 avensis is a 101hp or 110hp version(using the reg on car parts websites say it could be either)?

Never heard of 101hp 4A-FE or 3ZZ-FE engines - both have 109hp in T22 avensis. Must have been a typo.
