And thanks to Osweiler for shooting down the ridiculous offer by Elway (who tried to tie him to Denver).

Absolutely - Elway dodged a bullet and spent all last year grinning from ear to ear.

who keeps bringing in these awful QB's?
    John Elway
That person needs to be fired.
Like that is going to happen
Second best QB in Denver, best was Peyton obviously, over the last seven years is Tim Tebow and he isn't even in the league anymore!
Didn't stop the Pats signing Tebow - did it.

I'd take siemian over tebow personally, very average but kind of understands his limitations, had a bit of a footballing brain on him and I reckon he's got a 10 year career as a fairly high end back up or even stopgap starter ahead of him. Then again I had a really, really poor opinion of Tebow.

Drafting Tebow (in the first round) was the result of McDaniels thinking he was the second coming of BB - and demonstrated how far out in left field McD was as a HC.

You are accurate with Siemian - one of the reasons why the Broncos have been so bad this season is because Mike McCoy was trying to get Siemian do things he wasn't able to do (and it was the reason why McCoy was fired). He is limited and he understands his limitations - and when you play to his strengths he will hold the fort (Kubiak proved that last year when he went 9-7 with the same roster that is now in the basement).

The most talented QB on the Broncos team is Chad Kelly and has been since he was drafted. Kelly is a nut job - but if he gets his head out of his ass and is half as good as his uncle then he will be the future Broncos QB.

    Not grinning anymore however.

Nope - he was an idiot for hiring Joseph (it was nearly as big a blunder as Bowlan hiring McDaniels).

The hiring of Joseph was directly the result of Elway letting Matt Russell having too much influence in the Broncos front office. Russell should have been sacked when the rest of McDaniels crew were shown the door - he has been a disaster for the Broncos, drafting the wrong players, turning player evaluation meetings into boozing sessions, and getting his frat buddy the HC gig in Denver. Joseph should never have been hired - Elway knew of the accusations of inappropriate behaviour by Joseph while a coach in university in Denver and decided that such an individual was the guy to be appointed HC.

McCarthy, Capers and the GM get an easy ride because of his brilliance. It's farcical that he's only ever been to one bowl!

Yep. Geno getting the start. Complete madness he’s not a solution

More of a sacrificial lamb so they don't have to watch a franchise legend get publicly beaten on a weekly basis I'd say

Not really much of a choice. Seems like he was given the option of being a token starter to keep the streak going. He has too much self respect to take it.

Sad to see the streak end with this dumpster fire.

I thought the general consensus was that Eli wasn't the problem here, that it was the incompetent coaches? Are they scapegoating him, or is he genuinely worse than Geno Smith? Because if it's the latter that's one of the most amazing falls in quality of a QB I've ever heard of.

There is just little point in playing him much. I mean at this point winning just costs them draft position. They will spend the rest of the season trying out their two other qbs to prove to themselves that they really need a new one.

They are not saying he is the problem or that smith is better.

I wonder is this a direct result of beating Kansas City on Sunday. Reward for picking up a win is to bench a healthy franchise QB, one can only assume to improve draft position.

This is a problem of the NFL's own (and the players) making. The idea of tanking is a modern one in the NFL. The new rookie wage scale has put so much value on the draft (and position) that mediocre and bad teams are racing to the bottom with little over half the season gone, and the fact that the fans seem to accept it is just as sad really (although stategically it is probably the correct way to go)

Well if Eli is gone from NY, I've never really rated him as much as others but he is still a good QB... JAX drafting a QB in the 2nd-4th round (or first if someone they really rate falls to them) and getting him as a FA would be some coup for those lads. Said the same about them an Romo (or even Cutler) last year but with Fournette, a pretty decent receiving corps and that ridiculous defense they've suddenly become a really attractive option for older QBs looking to pick up rings (and Eli having three over two teams would be a pretty awesome achievement).

Agreed. Elite looking defense, decent run game, warm weather, tax free, and looking to be on the cusp of the playoffs (and traditionally weak division over the last few years)

I'd take him in Denver, but it's sad to say we don't look like the best landing spot at the moment, with likely a new head coach trying to rebuild.

Surely they would have done it after the Kansas win then and not after the thanksgiving day loss. It's weird to bench him in favour of Geno unless Geno is doing extraordinary things in practice. Maybe the coaches are seeing something in Geno and want to give him a shot. I feel sorry for Eli but he hasnt been good this year.

Manning hasn’t been great, and they’ve been losing games with him anyway; but Geno?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,495 ✭✭✭✭Billy86

If NY had a young guy they were excited about or wanted to test out that would be one thing but this reeks of tanking - Geno Smith is barely even backup quality to my mind. Are there any really, really exciting QBs coming out this year? They're currently picking 3rd, though SF will not be looking at a QB and I doubt CLE will either (but with that basket case of a team, who fecking knows?).

...that's exactly what I mean.....they should have benched him after the loss, not after the win.....very strange unless you as an organisation are unhappy to be winning games.

They are benching him after a loss (where the offense scored 3pts, with Eli throwing 27 times for 113yards and 1INT). It's not all on Eli, but he's part of the problem as well.

Apparently geno is on this week and Webb is starter from there. They didn't want to throw Webb in on a road game

Ah yes, my bad. Thought they had just played KC and won. Still, a poor way to treat a decent QB with plenty left in the tank.

From their archive and quite funny to read about the early game from an English perspective.

Plus Webb has been playing scout team all season so he has pretty much zero reps with the first team and as you say you can't throw him into the black hole to face Irvin and Mack with no practice. He'll have 2 weeks to get ready for a slumping Cowboys team at home so the Giants can get some sense of what they might have with him.
