Shocking story you would think any robber would know better than to try and rob Padraig Nally.

    http://www.thestar.ie/star/padraig-nally-on-traveller-gang-confrontation-all-the-bad-memories-came-back-58205/

FARMER Padraig Nally was forced to call in gardai after confronting a three-man Traveller gang who he believes were about to rob him.
Mr Nally (70) — who shot dead intruder John ‘Frog’ Ward on his Cross farm in Co Mayo in October 2004 — said the confrontation left him shaken and brought up “a lot of bad memories”.
Speaking with The Star, Mr Nally — who has campaigned for increased protection for homeowners — said it took gardai half an hour to arrive after he chased the trio out of his yard.
“It shook me up. I didn’t like seeing them there — it brought up bad memories,” he told The Star.
    Smart

“I was after coming back through the fields and the three of them were there interfering in the yard.
“I’d no doubt if they’d got more time they’d have started taking stuff — they were there for no other purpose.
“I told them to get off the property, that they’d no business here. They were trying to act smart and they were humming and hawing about leaving until I called the Gardai.
    “They were looking for trouble.

They should be sentenced to transportation to Australia. Leave decent people alone.

There's a good reason why they didn't get close and evasion of property is an attack.

Poor man, should be left in peace.

Never have sympathy when someone is killed invading a persons house, especially when they are isolated elderly people.

a series of well placed fox traps around the yard......maybe half hidden in muck and dirt arranged around a pile of copper in the middle of the yard. place warning signs around in case neighbours call, pretty sure the scobies cant read anyway

    The man is a legend.

I'd be surprised if this is the first time he has had hassle from the travellers since the infamous incident.

Watched crime line tonight and another man of 80 was attacked some scum out there . We all have to watch out for the elderly in our area . Sad state we live in

I just hope one of his neighbours 'forgot' their shotgun at his place and he uses it on scum that try to terrorise/rob him again.

Exactly, and then do a Dexter Morgan style job on them afterward!

Filth like them never learn no mater how many times they are convicted or jailed.

Yes but our think law would have him in jail. Also he is a good man pushed to breaking point forced to loss the head . I would never want that man to be pushed into that state as he said himself he has to meet his God on the other side like the robber . Poor man

    WTF.

Leave the elderly alone! (Except for help & care)

    Go for bear traps.

If he was not convicted then he can still own a
    gun, yes/no ?

But his conviction was quashed just 11 months later when the Court of Criminal Appeal ruled that the judge had erred in law by not allowing the jury to return a not-guilty verdict and he was later acquitted of manslaughter following a retrial.

The case was regarded as a decisive factor in the introduction of a home defence bill in 2012.

The Criminal Law (Defence and the Dwelling) Bill permits a tenant, homeowner or visitor to stand their ground when attacked in a home and specifically states that there is no requirement for a person to retreat.

He said in that interview/show with charlie bird that he's not allowed own a gun. Pretty stupid as it was self defense, how will he defend himself from an intruder again?

You were always entitled to defend yourself.
Nally's problem was that he followed the guy off his property and even went back to his house to get more ammo and went out again. Or more to the point Nally's problem was that he volunteered that information in a statement to the police.

It truly sickens me to hear this poor man is being tormented yet again. He and those like him deserve a bit of peace and security in their last years....the spineless bastards seeking out "weak" elderly victims ought to be hanged.

I would imagine this information was presented in the original trial ?
He was till found not guilty - I'm really curious as to why he was denied one.

Mc Nally is a hero to me, but come on now. Surely you realise if you shoot a man dead in Ireland, the chances of renewing your gun licence is zero.

As mentioned by a previous poster, Crimecall tonight featured a reconstruction of a break in, attempted robbery and terrorizing of an elderly man in rural Tipperary. Deeply distressing to watch, it showed just how vulnerable those living alone and especially, the elderly living alone, can be.

And just what miserable lowlifes the perpetrators of this particular crime are.

I feel very sorry for those elderly living in fear of such attacks. And that includes Patrick Nally.

Obviously, the law is not a deterrent for these criminals. That's something that has to change. And, as tonight's Crimecall pointed out, being vigilant, caring neighbours is a huge help too.

Yes, it must have been very hard for him standing over a wounded and man and shooting him dead.

The local police superintendent gets to decide who gets a gun license or not. And it's not just on grounds of convictions. But you make a good point - if his gun license was taken off him it could be seen to imply he did something wrong.

Aside from the gun, the point I was making was that Nally would never of had any problem except he made a statement where he was honest to a fault and admitted to offensive as opposed to just defensive actions. And some idiot of a guard took that statement. Instead of maybe suggesting he take some legal advice or gather his thoughts. He came out with the gem that hitting the traveller was "like hitting a badger. or a stone"

I ****ing hate krackers. Dirty rotten scummy cúnts of biscuits. If they were to come near my house after someone did the shopping I'd be straight out with the shotgun again to rid my house of the dirty fcukers. Got a bad pack of Jacobs Creams a few years back and I shot them dead. I'd do it again and rightly so.

The same man tormented Nally for several weeks so much that he had to sleep in a run down shed and was fearing for his life. Btw he wasn't standing over frog ward when he shot him the 2nd time.

Oh away with the lefty nonsense for just once. Why was said wounded man there? To give him flowers? Oh wait... no... he was there to rob him blind and likely worse given said "man's" (many)previous* and the previous intimidation of Mr Nally. The lefty nonsense of "all property is theft" and "shure what can you do and shure won't insurance cover it" doesn't begin to illustrate the terror many elderly and not so elderly people feel in isolated areas of this country.

Said "man" had eighty convictions. Eighty. And those were only the crimes he was found out and found guilty of. Eighty FFS. And yet he was free to raom abroad to commit more crimes. Insanity. Did he deserve being shot? Debatable, he certainly deserved to be in a gaol cell for life to keep his sort from the rest of human society. And he ended up shot to death because he wasn't taken out of normal human society.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

The list of convictions that man had for violent assault and robbery were shocking and highlights how easy it is for career criminals in this country.

Wasn't there a retired Sargent who caused controversy around the time of the trial saying he should have shot the son as well? How anyone feels sorry for frog ward and not Nally is beyond me.

I have an elderly uncle who scared the s**t out of a couple of these gents. When they drove in the lane he was out with the crowbar, told them he'd smash the f**king windscreen, and then do them. Funny, he's usually so quiet.

Better still and speaking as a wolf pack owner. There is nothing like a few German Shepherds, to keep scum of your property.

Scum tend to poison dogs, and unless you view the dogs as nothing but items, the loss of your dogs can be emotionally crippling.

Bear-traps are the way to go. Put them inside a fenced off area, and when the trap is tripped, the fen goes full electric.

All you need is a roll of copper bolted to the side of a wall...
