    Many congrats to Dundalk.

Although its a pile of cash for you, and will probably mean you dominating the league for a few more years, great to see a LoI club do us proud.

Ah let me tell you the story of Shams great pile of cash from 2011 which lead to them dominating the league. 😉

How will it change the team? Like who would we sign now that we couldn't already get?

We have almost got as much already that Rovers mountain of cash from EL groups with the restructuring of payments. Would be the guts of €4mil if we progressed like Rovers. One thing they did do with their money is sign Stephen Kenny on a long deal and then sack him before a full season....and now the cupboard is bare with Directors 'loans' helping give a digout. In fairness we all probably underestimated the job Michael O'Neill was doing, he raised the bar for Shamrock Rovers collective ego, if that is possible, and SK was gone before he could do a squad rebuild while having to also keep hold some of the hoops' heroes even if they didn't fit the character type SK wants around the squad. You can see it in Oriel but with traveling with the club charter it is obvious the bond and camaraderie there is among the players, management, club officials, and indeed supporters too.

Its a small thing but not so long ago watching Dundalk FC warm up pregame and the subs at half time it was all just pinging shots at the reserve keeper. No drills of intensity to mimic match conditions. Dundalk now have their drills and match prep that is seen in the pro game at te tops level. FH were all over the place during pre match warm ups, in 2s and 3s rather than as a squad. Playing keepy ups at HT messing. Maybe they were complacent but it certainly didnt look too well organised. We shouldn't have made it so hard for ourselves!!

Agree with this big time! I think if we weren't expected to win either of the matches, we would have played better as the underdog.

Hopefully we can beat BATE. But I will be praying that we somehow don't get beaten by 2 over there. So that we have something for the fans to go up and see and cheer on.

Do we know who we could potentially get in either the champs league playoff or europa league playoff?

Congrats Dundalk, credit to all involved. Hope they can push on and qualify for one of the tournaments. Europeann runs gather interest from non LOI supposrters like myself which can only be good for raising the interests across the country
    Best of luck vs BATE

Kinda spooky that you know i was the game in OP last night Nesta :D

Had been off the beer for 4 months, cousins over from England so decided to bring the drought to an end and sure no better time to do it!

The Lilywhite was the final destination but we made a few pit -stops along the way.Jimmys(packed) The Punters(ditto). On to Oriel - jammers, but still got seats and a good view of the telly. The place was electric.Last few mins were torture but then......over the line and BOOM!
Next best thing to being there(in Iceland) i reckon.

    Not my vid btw

What to be fair were you expecting at this stage?

I wouldn't mind my club having the same tough draw but that's

where we might differ' Best of luck anyway!

    Awful awful draw for Dundalk.

Absolutely. Would have been great to get United, Roma and Feyenoord. Would be interesting to see how Dundalk would do against them. If anything would have raised the profile of the club, those ties would have.

    Sarcasm?
There's a reasonable argument that those kind of "glamour" ties would do more harm than good for Dundalk/LOI.
Putting aside the bumper gate in LR for a Dundalk V Man UTD match.
Dundalk at the end of a long season/out of season could easily be thumped.
That would be harsh on Dundalk and do nothing but reinforce the serotype the LOI is s*te and EPL is king.
It would also be soul destroying to see Dundalk in a "home game" playing in front of a sea of red in LR with a small pocket of Dundalk fans in the corner.
I also heard O'Donnell say that EL group stage is more their level.
I think Legia will be ripped apart in the group they got (Real Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, Dortmund).
Of course the money is huge but theres a sporting element to it too.

Agree with most of what you said there. I don't think there was a chance of seeing a sea of red as I heard that we had to declare the stadium before the draw and we declared Tallaght. But yeah, it would have been embarrassing. But less embarrassing when we beat them :p.

However, the glamour ties would have been great as we are going to play teams that excellent already and most likely going to beat us (but hopefully not). So we may aswell get beaten by teams that are well known.

Lets not worry about not getting so called 'glamour ties' as there will be next season and future years to consider. I dont mean this arrogantly as a given but I do think that this Dundalk side are learning about playing in Europe. The benefits are obvious in terms of the finances of the CL groups but respect and prestige are important eg We can now offer 52 week contracts on 3yr+ deals to players. If we are to lose them to clubs in England well we wont be snapping the hand off the buying club for 60 or 70k to keep the show on the road. The likes of Benson and McEleney the club can now demand what lower division clubs in England do and load the deal with add-ons. I'm not advocating a selling club model but competitive results in the Europa League rather than thumpings in the Champions League could help us price our players at a premium either as a deterrent or to get fair dues for the player if they want to leave. The intangible type benefits of say being in the last 32 of the EL with sponsors and attendances up could out way over time the lump sum of CL groups but with possible brand damaging hammerings. Hope I am making some sense here lol.

I think you are jumping the gun.
For what you say to become a reality, Dundalk would need to be in either European group stages on a regular basis.
As it stand this is their first time playing at that stage.
If 3 year 52 weeks of the year contracts start getting thrown around now like confetti, all the European money will be pissed away in no time.

Well said! 3 year 52 week contracts would be an absolute joke.

Plus a lot of the players don't want 52 week contracts.

Hopefully the anti-Israeli brigade keeps away.

I know there's an individual in Dundalk who specialises in whipping union members into a frenzy when there's an industrial dispute.

His other hobby is the Palestinian cause and no doubt he's working with his social justice warriors from Belfast and Dublin to hijack our evening.

Sport and politics should be kept apart.

While I sympathise with the Palestinian cause it should be kept away from Tallaght.
