I'd press the help button, that's what it's there for

Press then shout 'I put money in' then wait till it opens

Press then shout 'That gob****e behind me is trying it on' then wait till it opens

    FTFY ;)

I mainly use the free M50, but when I've had to head up north, I don't use the basket. I just make sure I toss a coin in the holder before I leave. I can whip the top off with my gloves on and stick it back on easy enough.

More fool you were. Why pay more than you have to. Take your time. the bigger the delay the bigger the queue and the sooner someone will open the barrier for you, It's not your fault the system cannot recognise a single motorcycle. PUSH THE BLOODY BUTTON. :D

The first car I told him what happened and as he couldn't back up he's paying the toll, pulled up right beside the barrier and he moved up and paid.

2nd car reversed because no cars behind him and the sensor reset itself. I didn't even know there was a help button.

Fair enough. As the saying goes

First day using some new gear fresh from NEC, so here's some thoughts ...

Shoei Neotec 2 - new helmets are always nice I guess, clean, fresh, snug, everything works nicely. I've got a Shoie GTI Air which is only 18months old, but this is definitely quieter and feels more comfortable. I went for the Sena SRL kit too, so nothing hanging off the helmet anymore, which I think helps cut out more of the wind noise. Sena voice control seems really good. Not the morning for riding with the front open, but nicer for getting in and out of the house and office not having a full face on.

Keis G501 Heated Gloves - been after heated gloves for a while, so these go nicely with the jacket and vest I have from Keis also. Given they are heated they are less bulky than my Richa Coldprotect, so give a nicer feel on the controls. The heating is great across the back of the palm and back of the fingers, but I tend to ride with fingers covering the brake/clutch sometimes, and was a bit surprised that the tips of my fingers weren't getting as much of the heat. For other brands I've worn a Medium, but went with a Small with these after trying both on. I found I still needed to wrap my hands fully around the grips, to ensure that my fingers were pressed well into the gloves, so definitely need a snug fit over anything bigger. I started off without the heated grips on, but these need to work together with the grips heating palms, and gloves heating back of the hand. Anyway, bloody hot on High once stationary or in slow moving traffic, so good to know the heat is there. Heavy rain on 50min commute this morning, and everything stayed dry, so seem good on the waterproof front. (6C this morning for me, heavy rain on the motorway, and AccuWeather telling me RealFeel 1C)

VisorCat - anyone else got one of these? Paid 30quid for it. Not overly impressed so far. Didn't need as much of the cleaning action this morning, but found the 'wipe' part still a bit clunky. Maybe I was expecting too much. I'd still put Nikwax on the visor, and that did great for first 30mins on motorway, so slowed into traffic and went for a clean/wipe. The wipe is like when your car wipers jump and judder, not the nice smooth squeegee action I was hoping for. I might stick a coat of fluid on the wipe part too, might help smooth it out a bit.

Interested to see how you get on with these for the next while - I have been eyeing up a heated pair for a while but they always seem to fall short on protection or waterproofing and the lack of being able to try them on.

These G501's are brand new, just arrived this month apparently. If you're in Dublin, the lads in Harley/Triumph should be stocking them, so worth trying them on there.
Protection looks good on these and the lad on the stand at NEC reckon they put the first batch sitting in bucket of water for a couple of days and were still dry in the inside.

Used to have a Vee Wipe - it fell off :( didn't think it was that great anyway

My current winter gloves have a rubber wiper blade built into the left thumb, I prefer to use the leather of my index finger instead, I think it's less likely to scratch the visor and doesn't smear it as much when there's only a small quantity of rain.

    Life ain't always empty.

Anyone interested in meeting up at the CMCC Santa ride out to St.Joseph's Center in Porterstown next weekend?.

This is a super ride out, we're escorted by An Garda too so there's no acting the bollox.

The center provides a range of services for people with a moderate, severe or profound intellectual disabilities.

Lads I do a number of these charity rides during the year and if I was to pick a fav this one would be it. From start to finish its a wonderful day (starts with free food at the Hardrock Cafe, Templebar!!) and when you see the joy and excitement we bring to the residents of St.Joseph's it makes your Christmas.

Dressing up as Santa and meeting the residents & having the craic, its brilliant.

I recall saying to one of the carers that I thought it was very sad that these adults really believed they were meeting real Santa's (they're like adult children God love them), her answer was brilliant "Every day is a childhood day for them", whats not to love about that.

As usual anyone going look out for my BMW R1200GS with two 'JUDO' stickers on the back box ~ and I'll be dressed up as Santa of course :P

Would anyone know the story with buying stuff from the U.S, the product i bought was €50 once converted, i didn't think am i liable for customs charges etc before buying, i assume i would be would i?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,459 ✭✭✭zubair

The reason I avoid buying from the states is because it always takes forever for customs to process it.

    Yes you would be liable.
What is it at the moment... something like 23% of the cost of the item + 23% of the cost of shipping.
And around a tenner (depending who delivers) handling.
That's if you get caught and to be honest, stuff from US,there's a good chance you will.

Jasus, i'll have a nice bill so on a €50 item, lesson learned.

Given the low value, any duty is usually disregarded, leaving just the VAT to deal with. This being on the landed cost, so whatever the product, plus the shipping/insurance/etc.

The exchange rate is usually set by the Revenue once a month and it'll be based on that figure. https://www.revenue.ie/en/customs-traders-and-agents/importing-and-exporting/exchange-rates/index.aspx

Lastly, handling by the carrier for being the Revenue's collection bitch. As said An Post now charge 1% (min €10) for that. DHL 2.5% (min €14.50).

My heated grips arrived they are the new oxford ones that dont need a relay etc, says so in the directions so that's good, wasnt looking forward to messing with my electrics after the trouble I had with a dodgy meta alarm

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,118 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Was riding behind a guy on a lovely Triumph earlier when a car pulled across a blind junction and he T-boned right into the side of it, about fifteen feet in front of me.

Yer man was okay, a bit shook up. His bike took a fair aul rattle though and I'd say it'll take a nice wedge to fix it. The young couple in be car were rattled too. Myself and another biker pulled in, pushed his bike across the road and I waited to give him my number if he needed a witness. Poor guy.

Definitely a reminder of all it takes to put us in serious danger though.

Seeing the guy in front of me spill his bike and himself, nope.
Driver was a woman with her fella in the car.

None of the Oxfords ones for the last five years need a relay. They have integrated shutoff with a green low battery warning.

They still take power to run that though which is why I don't trust them. Mine are on a relay just in case.

  • Registered Users Posts: 409 ✭✭LLewellen Farquarson

I installed the Oxford ones without a relay that say they should shut off if they detect low battery.
Nope, left them on by accident and they drained the battery.

    I installed a relay.

Be careful with the glue Oxford supplies, it melts at the highest heat setting and the grips move on the bars.

I've installed a few of the new Oxford grips with the voltage drop sensor, they've all worked fine and switched off automatically when they sensed a voltage drop.

R&G use Oxford heated grips rebranded. They suffer from the same ****e glue. Left my missus stranded one day with them.

I have the Oxford grips, but I've had no hassle at all so far.

You lot though are making me paranoid as hell haha
