If we do get any cold spells this winter, I have the feeling that its going to come from the east. Many, many weather enthusiasts from across Europe are going for a neutral to positive AO throughout the winter...I can see this winter being like 2011-2012, possibly with a short cold snap of 2/3 days sometime in late November to mid December, and then a very cold spell coming from the East sometime in January and February (maybe not even reaching Ireland). This winter could be very good in Eastern Europe, Turkey, Greece, Eastern/Southern Italy and Germany. I will not be surprised if we see a bottled up polar vortex, leaving the only chance of cold coming from Russia/Siberia.

Not surprised really. Those showers are bringing down some really cold air with them.

Was 10.0c here around 2.30. There have been two pretty light showers since then and it's now 4.3c here now. Snow symbol is up on the weather station. Wouldn't surprised if the Dublin/Wicklow Mountains see a sprinkle too!

Simon keelings forecast today is promising for the end if this month into early December. It's a good bit out but still good to see some signs of cold and dare I say it the beast from the east ;)

Should we at least be hopeful that a cold snap is on it's way? (Whether it produces snow or not?)

I've had a feeling for the past few days that there will be some kind of a cold snap towards the end of the month just from what the models have been hinting at. Probably nothing severe though. If I had to guess, something like 1 or 2 cold days with a wintry mix. It wouldn't really be too unusual for late November anyway. Could easily not happen at all though.

    2010 was a once off.

It was rare in terms of cold, but not in terms of snowfall. Neither 2009 nor 2010 broke any of the 50 year snow depth records at these Met Eireann stations.

Lowell maybe no met stations did but many places saw higher totals than those.
