The Couch Stretch is the most beautifully horrible and effective stretch. So painful when I'm doing it but the relief after is amazing.

Is it okay to work out for almost 2 hours. First hour is running session, second in gym doing mostly leg work(off season sprinter). I drink a bit of lucozade on way to gym in hope that it will give me more energy. It seems to be working okay for me, google tells me its baaaaddd

I would be worried about your intensity if you're able to keep it going for two hours.

    what about deadlifting?

Give all three a bash and at least set a total for yourself and something to beat the next time !!

    Quick question.

What would be the standards for a lad to enter a powerlifting competition?

    Be a lad.

Other than that, you might only need to meet a certain total to qualify for nationals like in IPF.

Can't remember who said it here (probably Hanley) but if you are thinking about entering a PL meet, you are ready to enter a PL meet.

I entered one and was significantly weaker than everyone else but still enjoyed the sh1t out of it. Everybody at a meet is sound and encouraging. Talking to and competing against people who were a similar build to me but far stronger than me made me want to work even harder.

    Great.

I'll make it a goal to compete in 2017 then, no matter how hilariously embarrassing the outcome may be :D

Throw in your weight and combine your current 1RMs here. Go over to the IPF results page here and you should get a rough feel for where you're at.

Wow, I'd be on the novice list, on the top lower half by the looks of things .

It doesn't matter how you fare against anyone else. It's how you do yourself.

I'm in the same boat and plan to do a meet as well!

The ability to wear a singlet and physically do any of the lifts with any weight.

Seriously ... there isn't a standard for open comps ... and you could have lads squatting anything from 120kg to 320kg in the same class ... apart from the top lifters most are just out to set a total or PB ... if you have any interest just do it and you'll know quite quickly if you like it or not?

The soundest lads where I train are the lads that compete at a pretty good level.

Part of the reason I want to get involved in it, tbh

This specific comp is squat and bench only. I was kinda disappointed myself when I didnt see deadlifts on the event list

I think you should still deadlift, following the rules is for nerds

Do the squats and bench and when you lockout the last bench, stand up, unrack the bar and deadlift it before roaring "SBD4LYFE"

Lads, I'm gonna be heading on a holiday on Monday next week.

I don't really read on holidays in general, but often will on the plane. But this year im feeling particularly lazy and reckon it'd do no harm to pick up a book on the ould body.

Was wondering if anyone here could advise on something decent worth getting? Not looking for a book that lists a load of exercises or that gives you a get-fit-quick workout or the likes. I'd be more interested in something that's scientifically based and discusses the body itself and it's reaction to different exercises (rep ranges, heavy weights vs light weights, etc.) Just a basic overall body + fitness guide I suppose.

Is there such a book out there? Or will I just have to spend my week writing it myself (full of factually incorrect information, of course)?

Preferably something i can order on Book Depository :)

Strength Training Anatomy is a pretty interesting read and sounds exactly like what you're looking for. LINK

    Cheers folks.

Blacktie, i looked at the amazon preview for the book you sent, but from my overview it seemed to be more of an exercise guide in general. (ie; this is how to do a bicep curl, and this is the muscle it targets. This is how to do a tricep pushdown, and this is the muscle it targets, etc.) which wasn't really what I was looking for.

However, it did lead me onto another book(s) that I bought.

Hanley, I'll be completely honest - I don't know how, but I didn't even see your post until after I got something. But I'll give it a mooch on amazon when Im back and done with the two I got. Will do no harm :)

Incase anyone cares, the two books I settled on were Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy and then just as a back up incase I hate that (although the amazon preview makes it look like exactly what I'm after) i also picked up The Strength Training Anatomy Workout which looks a bit crappy from the cover and blurb, but again, using Amazon's preview, looked like it might actually be okay.

If you're ever looking for similar again - any of Lyle McDonald's stuff is excellent too. Prolly need to order from his site so some additional hassle. But worth it

That's the same series as the one Blacktie suggested. It's a follow up to the original with a more programming focus.

My gym has a copy of the original. It's good, more detailed than just curls = biceps type stuff

KKV what about finding some good strength/fitness podcasts on YouTube and then exporting the video to an audio file, would be perfect for the plane/beach/loo

In the squat I am favouring one leg heavily so it is very lopsided. Is there anything I should do to counteract this? I am happy enough with it but obviously it would be better if the weight was distributed more evenly. My feet positioning matches.

Split squats or lunges to help strengthen the leg that you aren't favouring, ie probably the weaker leg?

Do you do any unilateral leg work now?

I'd test the relative strength using Bulgarian split squats and single leg deadlifts.

You may also have one dormant glute, do you do any glute activation work?

Could be a mobility issue I used to have an issue with ankle mobility on my right side which caused me to shift into my weight at the bottom of as ATG squat
