There's no confirmation of ball bearings being used.
It is reported by witnesses that they saw ball bearings in the aftermath of the explosion.

One completely bizzare image is of the woman who is running as the bomb goes off about 50 feet behind her,she turns around then quickens her pace only to pause & stop her stopwatch as she crosses the line.
This scene can be seen on the footage being shown on the news.It just struck me as very strange under the circumstances,it was almost as if the explosions were secondary to her recording her finishing time:confused:

She probably spent the last few minutes of the race imaging crossing the line and the explosion probably didn't register with her immediately so she completed her race how she had planned.

There's footage of a police officer turning around to the explosion, then turning around to look at the race, and then walking out into the race path to look again at the explosion. When something like this happens out of the blue it takes a moment to react accordingly, even when you're trained.

The clearest video of the explosion i have seen- can only imagine the ensuing panic to be standing next to that. :( If you look closely you can also see the subsequent second explosion further down the street.

NSFW signifies more risque/rude stuff that you wouldn't want your colleagues to see

That harrowing image could cause some people serious problems.

In this thread did you really expect nudity or rude stuff in fairness?

Flip sake and there I was reading that "some runners ran to mass." and little that I realised that it was followed by "General Hospital" and that "Mass" was short for Massachusetts :pac:

If you are concerned about an Irish Citizen in Boston, call the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs special helpline:

    (01) 478 0822
    +353 1 478 0822

You can also call the Boston's Mayor's Office Helpline on :

    +1 617 635 4500

However, please be aware that telephone services in Boston are quite choked up at the moment due to huge volumes of calls to those numbers. It might be best to call the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs first.

Also please be aware that mobile phone services in Boston have been temporarily switched off as there are concerns that they may be used to trigger another device.

If you need to call someone, try landlines first (if you know landline numbers).

Email, Skype and social networking may be the best bet for text-based messaging for the moment.

If you're in Boston, don't assume that an SMS home has worked as the networks are definitely in lock-down mode!

Not a nice pic to be circulated for a family member to see. Nice of the photographer

To think that the guy probably just went down to look at the marathon and maybe cheer on someone he knows......and his life has just utterly changed in one instant because of some misguided fools.

I've been a runner and a spectator in marathons, until now it would literally be the last place on earth I would feel afraid (maybe not rational but true)...they are to me at least a celebration of being alive of perseverance and dedication a great occasion and family spectacle

if that photo did any good for me it brought home the true horror of what acts like this actually mean.....I've never cried from reading/seeing anything on boards but that photo just has me in tears......life isn't fair or just at all.

Just watching th footage and when the explosion happens everyone running is affected
And stumble except for one old man just keeps running not even noticing it,very strange.

    From this, we infer that
    a) the old man did it
    b) the old man is deaf
    c) people don't act the way you'd think they would in times of mayhem

That poor guy in the wheelchair is now all over my Facebook news feed. Can't believe the idiots who are sharing it. Some people can't handle seeing those pictures (One girl I know said she got sick after seeing it) and they really shouldn't be plastered all over a social media site.

A guy has his legs blown off, and within hours thousands of random people around the world on message boards who he never met are getting a load of his agony.

we took a wrong turn somewhere.

    I understand what you mean.

But why not show the reality of such incidents? Perhaps if people can see how horrific violence is, then they might not be so quick to jump the gun and demand knee-jerk reactions.

On the other hand, I know that's being naieve, and shock sells, but still.

Some of the video footage really annoys me. You can see people struggling to get barriers and stuff out of the way yet the tool who's recording won't even lend a hand. I understand people cannot always help medically but I fail to see how you can have the ability to hold a camera but not help move a barrier.

it is a damning indictment on the human race today that in the midst of a tragedy, like these bombings, that people feel the need to take photos and video the whole thing. What good do they get out of it only a few seconds of fame on the internet?

I know people would have been recording the race finish anyway, but surely they should have a bit of respect for the victims and NOT record the devastation

It's being extremely naive I would have thought, it's more likely to just intensive whatever people are already thinking/feeling so I doubt it would prevent kneejerk reactions.
