Would not work in my job at all. Try telling the rich people we're only gonna open the markets 4 days a week :pac:

I know you didn't read it but do you know how they did that study to come to that conclusion?

I'd think the same as Ivy. Once people get over the novelty and get used to four days, they'll just want three.
What we COULD do - turn the week into 9 days long. 3 day weekend. Then we wouldn't lose working time. And then we'd have 5 days over at the end of the year, for Christmas or something.

From what I was told it was based on balancing a lot of different factors. One of the main ones was work/life balance. One of the things they thought would really make people appreciate things more was if a weekday was available to everyone to get things done.

The other thing the tried to balance was the amount of unemployment and underemployment. The looked at if everyone was employed roughly in line with their qualifications and abilities, you could have a regular five day week for services (and sometimes a six day week) by hiring more people but reducing the amount of hours everyone works along with the pay everyone gets. This would also help reduce income disparity across everyone as the minimum people would be getting would only reduce a little, while the higher levels would reduce a lot. And this would work out as at the higher levels people often feel time constraints more than financial restraints.

The biggest challenge to this was overcoming inefficiencies where there is literally only one person in a business capable of doing their work. It's already something academia is looking hard at with "knowledge silos" (All the knowledge being stored in one place, i.e. one person.) If this could be addressed with getting more people to share the totality of work with less hours for all they realised efficiency would actually go up. With less hours to work people will work better for the hours they are working (as in everyone knows that there are certain times when literally nothing gets done.) This is partly balanced by there only being one or two days where everyone is off (the traditional Saturday and Sunday) while everyone else might have a three day weekend, or a mid-week day off split between everyone working. They also thought it would reduce the effects of someone being sick, because their entire productivity can be picked up by someone else, and this is the same for extended sick leave and parental leave.

There are already industries that operate on a 34 hour work week, and it has been effective with some of them. This was a big theoretical paper on addressing the economy and worker/society happiness. From what I know it was written by a left-wing think thank in the UK.

Interesting... so it's not actually a three day weekend either? I'm still not convinced but its making a little more sense.

But what about the crossover? If everyone does 4 days would you not end up with too many people on at least one day? Or people working on specific projects? If they're out one day every week it could make stuff like that harder to manage?

Is this all just theory or has it been tested out?

Sorry, I'm just throwing my thoughts out there.

Your job still sounds cool

I think 4 day work week BUT fit all the hours in there would be okay. We could totally do that
    8-6 4 days a week or something

I think I used about 50m of bubble wrap to wrap the tv, I hope it survives!

I could totally go in for a 4 day week :D

No, it's not a three day weekend. Part of it was a recognition that having Saturday and Sunday off, every week of the year wasn't really practical for a lot of industries any more. I think it still guaranteed Sunday off for most, but then brought about a system where you would have two days off together and one day off between them.

The whole thing is that individuals work less for a little less, society works more at a little more expense, but this all balances with more people working being more productive in total.

It was one of those highly theoretical papers that looks at a complete change in how society operates and then people can extract smaller ideas for changes that would have a beneficial effect from the paper.

It's an interesting idea, not having everyone to the same schedules and making it awkward for people who work weekends or whatever
Might make socialising more difficult though, finding the right times! :D

Apparently my singing for a friend or family would "ruin their wedding", says a poster who doesn't know me
    That's nice...

But it'd be ruining it in a way only a valued member of family could. :P

Dafuq? I had my friend sing for my wedding and it was amazing because it was personal, some people are clearly crazy :/

Rules schmules, we did what we wanted and had the most relaxed day, then again I've been told I was the anti-bridezilla so that could've been a factor!

I'm gonna have a troll wedding.

A week before my sister's, in the same venue. All the guests are forced to wear white. No wine will be served or even available for purchase. Bridesmaids have to pay for everything, including my dress. Which will be a gypsy style dress.

    And bluewolf will sing.

I assumed it was the wedding forum!

That sounds awful, except for Bluey singing which would make up for everything else.

Had a charity person at the door - after my one experience with hard sales - I will never be dismissive again (I usually just say no) - so I let her talk and everything and was really friendly.

Last night I dreamed I got married in Eynsham Hall (one of the main indications that it was a dream) :pac: and I sang at it myself and missed my first dance. No idea how that actually worked out, but there you go. Woke up feeling very disappointed in myself! Strange, strange dream.

I'm going to Dublin tomorrow for the first time in what feels like aaaaaages, can't wait!

Yeah it was the singing forum - I was asking how people started doing weddings and saying I assumed friends & family as I couldn't charge without more experience and I wouldn't feel comfortable without more training. I'm on grade 8 now but obviously would prefer to at least have it done. I've done gigs on cello and all and did do a family member's reception, but not singing. So yeah, that'd ruin it apparently :pac:

    Did you win??

We agreed to disagree, but I totally won. :P

Spent 7 hours in A&E last night with my friend who injured/possibly broke her foot. After all that, the doctor told her that it might be broken, but he couldn't tell so he'd have someone else look at in "in a few days". Then he told her to go home and put a bag of frozen peas on it and not put weight on it for a few days. But he refused to give her crutches so she can walk/move, so she had to walk on it to get home. What?!

7 hours of waiting and your professional medical opinion is hobble home on the foot you're not supposed to walk on and put a bag of peas on it?!?! Not impressed.

I have to say reducing my work hours was the best thing I've ever done. I hated work so much and just dreaded every day - now I work 2 days a week (sometimes more if there's holidays so am working a bit more in July) and only in 2 places I like - before I'd be working loads of places I hated. My salary halved but one of the huge benefits of being married is I could transfer my tax credits and our take home pay hasn't reduced as much. In theory I'm a stay at home domestic goddess... in reality I rush around cleaning and getting dinner on for the hour before himself gets home :P

Loving watching Wimbledon this week - have my strawberries and everything!

Fire alarm went off at work and we all had to sit out in the sun. BOOO!

Then a bunch of good looking fire-people turned up in their engines.

    My life is SOOO hard.
