I'm looking at the window now, I've to go from Inchicore to Fitz Place, I shall be taking the Luas. I got blown up the street when I went for coffee.

Walked to work and back, an hour each way today. I was really hoping to be back on the bike tomorrow (in Dublin), but it looks like it’ll be walking and then a cross city taxi for me, with that wind 😠

lashing rain and I have the option of car or bike for my 5km commute, car it is, for the first time in over two years.

June 2022 has been very poor, always a very stiff breeze with regular enough rain. Wear you out

I brought 2 changes of gear and a towel in my bag today, certainly wasn't as bad as I was lead to believe but was glad of the towel when I got in.

I'm currently wimping out. Yesterday was a lovely day, would have been perfect for a spin, but I had stuff to do all day long.

Planned out a nice spin for this morning, was really looking forward to it. Go up at 7.15, and it was spilling rain, with the forecast giving rain for the rest of the day.

Can't bring myself to go out in it. Gonna boil the kettle and have a cup of tea

I was supposed to have been doing a charity cycle today but it was postponed due to the weather forecast. Barely spitting really in Dublin.

Garage for me today, luckily got a nice 108km spin in yesterday and caught up with a few Dub cycling buddies on a new route for me. Headed over to Dunsaney, Summerhill, and around to see the 3 or more "finishing" lines of the IVCA racing routes.

My 3 year old is the wimp.

We were at the door to go in the car and the rain eased.

5 year old and myself decided we'd chance the bikes. Youngest braced for a big strop and I took the easy route. I am also a wimp

good day to cycle in Dublin city once you have the correct rain gear. Traffic at a standstill on the northside and no doubt everywhere else. some extreme red light breaking going on by drivers at the junction of Ballymun road and Collins avenue

I cycled into work today. The rain for the first half of the 13km journey was heavy but during the second half it became torrential (so much for Met Eireann's expected 1.8mm!). Plenty of standing water along the way but what made it worse was the number of drivers on the Ballyowen Rd in Lucan that sped along the 24/7 bus lane beside me without a care in the world.

When I got to work, I found that the rain had leaked into my backpack and then through the plastic shopping bag that my clothes were in and I'm now wearing a shirt that is wet on one side and dry on the other 😕

I looked out the window after getting up and said "nope", not cycling 30k in that.

I did cycle to the Dart station, though that's only 5 mins.

I'm now wearing a shirt that is wet on one side and dry on the other

as long as the side that's dry is the inside and the side that's wet is the outside...

Ah it's all dry now, inside and out. 👍

My cycling gear on the other hand is still soaked

the cycle lanes on griffith avenue are full of water and leaves. (not that i cycled)

Brave doing the n4 today. That bus lane is 100% lethal. The bicycle "lane" is in a shocking state but honestly I would be using that the next time, most of it at least.

You are going from leixlip right? I'm going via westmanstown / lutrellstown currently and finding it ok.

I'd hold the opposite view. The N4 bus lane generally is fine and you can build up a decent enough pace on it. The road past westmanstown though encourages (in my experience) close passes into bends.

Bloody cars cutting across junctions and blocking yellow boxes, taxis who should have expected buses and bikes to go when the light went green. They didn't even have a green as their filter light was red. Man, some days, just f*ck people in general.

yeah, I know. its six of one, half dozen of the other. Just my experiences on the n4 bus lane, particularly before woodies have been fairly horrible. White vans, private busses, taxis, going past you at speed, with very little clearance and beeping at you. I find it easier to keep an eye on the traffic behind me on the quieter backroads.

I wimped out today, fair play, saw a fair few of you on strava, dedicated souls. The older I get...its the cleaning of the bike that puts me off rather than cycling in the rain 😉🤣

It was pretty miserable alright. To make things worse, I had a hectic day at work so forgot about trying to dry my gear and had to don the same cold and wet stuff for the commute home.

Some obnoxious motorists out there this morning. I got blasted out of it by a few just because I moved out a little to avoid standing water.

First time in full length bibs since May. Autumn is finally here.

That was a tough call to walk out the door this morning, no sleep, complete darkness, decent rainfall. Glad I did but cars were giving me the whole width of the road, probably thought I was unhinged and likely to do anything.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 43,021 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

On my commute this morning, the rain had eased off but because of it, traffic along the N4 by Lucan was crazy. One motorcyclist travelling along the bus lane made a point that I should have been on the adjacent footpath/cycle path despite me doing about 35km/h. I think the irony of his instruction was lost on him given he is not meant to be in the bus lane!

Further on as I turned from the Ballyowen Rd onto the Nangor Rd, I had the driver of a courier van offer me the same suggestion (despite the cycle lane ending about 100m further on).

I'm also conscious of the Oireachtas meeting yesterday on garda policing of motoring offences in relation to active travel. Did I see any gardai today? What do you think!

I wonder was it the same guy as I had a motorcyclist try to point this out to me in pretty much the same location too pointing at this sign https://www.google.com/maps/@53.3568179,-6.4646588,3a,15y,103.89h,88.46t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWcrR8YbeBinKCOGHGROTuA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 which actually depicts the lane as being a shared bus and bike lane!

It was on the Woodies side of the Newcastle junction.

At least the N4 sign in your link is a legal sign. I've been beeped along the Ballyowen Rd south of the Grange Castle roundabout. The bus lane signs there aren't legal (they should be using RUS 028). I've reported it to SDCC a few times and been consistently ignored.

I've also had people pull alongside me a couple of times on the Ballyowen Rd (R136) bus lane and inform me that that I shouldn't be cycling on a motorway.
