Got it working...had a static route set on my router, changed it back to dynamic and its now pulling an address from the Horizon box and my wifi stability has increased 1000% :D

My wifi is crap also . no decent range and dropping intermittently .
I will have to try this out

can I use my old upc router for this?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,403 ✭✭✭paulboland

so you can kill the wifi on the horizon box and use an external router?
Note you don't need to turn off horizon wifi
you can have 2 wirelees setups
You need to turn off the routing and modem functions of your own wireless router and only use its wireless features as horizon cant be set up in bridge mode

You can get around bridge mode by doing this

If you want best performance what you need to do is this
    Your own wireless router
Set up as wireless access mode only
most modern wireless routers can do this like Belkin or Netgear or Asus
If it does not have this feature you will have to get one that does

Wireless Access Mode I have a Belkin N+
    Very easy to set up

What you need to do is this

    Specify IP Address
    192.168.192.xxx
xxx is a number eg 25 or use 254
not already used by another device so use something from 25 to 254 as I doubt you had 25 ip address already given out by horizon

    Subnetmask
    255.255.255.0

For security reasons also make sure you have changed your own wireless router password if its still at default (Note this is not the horizon router)

You can then connect your wireless devices and have better
wireless range and no drop outs and also another reason is all devices both wired and wireless will be sharing same network
So you want a dnla device that's connected to other router wireless show up on horizon it will and you can share any music videos etc between devices

If you need any help doing this pm me your details of wireless router model
and I will check if its possible to use this feature and let you know how to set it up

Note in this setup you connect wired cable from horizon to a lan port of your separate wireless router (Don't connect to the wan port)

No is the answer to this
    Separate non upc router

    Belkin netgear etc
You can use wireless router if it has the ability to set up as wireless access mode

    OK thanks

note you could connect your horizon to another router wan port but problem here is it will become a total separate network wont see any devices you have connected wired to horizon
    and also will cause problems

best way is set up separate router as wireless access mode only as this will see all devices on same network

    They rang and gave me

    Horizon Box With HD Channels
    Digital Max Pack

It finally happened. It was only a matter of time. One of my family wasn't paying enough attention and pressed OK on DELETE EVERYTHING! They hoped and prayed it just meant delete everything of that series, but no. Sigh, two thumbs up for logical UI design.

i was suppose to be getting upgraded to 100mb from 50mb for 1 euro extra just at the start of the horizon...but ive since been told that this wont be happening. I am not very happy now to find out others got this and i will be getting onto customer services as the upc reps were the ones that told me i wont be getting upgraded... seems to me that upc are taking advantage of people swapping over to horizon

In that case you got a sweet deal
If it was with movies and sport then you would have been screwed

anyone able to get the wireless working on the Wii?

    EDIT got it working

Hi, what did you have to do to get the Wii to connect? Everything connecting fine to it but Wii fails, finds it wirelessly but then a test connection fails after about 1 minute?

how d ya setup the remote to work the tv volume

    1. Switch ON the TV.
    2. Press the VOL- button followed by the SOURCE button an
have these both pressed down for 5 seconds until the
    TV ON/OFF button flashes twice.
    3. Enter the TV brand code (see the quick guide) for your TV
the number buttons within 10 seconds.
    4. To verify the connection, aim the remote control at the TV and
keep the TV ON/OFF button pressed until the TV switches offff.
This may take up to 1 minute.
    5. To acknowledge, press both the VOL button and the SOURCE
button for 5 seconds until the TV ON/OFF button flflashes twice.

Did the same thing three times,

in the end, had to plug out from the wall,

then magically, about 40 minutes ago, just started working again...

    Was sorting out channel favourites

cannot delete BBC1 or RTE2, they are on favourites, but no where on the right side to deselect.

I'm not sure if the broadband for me goes slow because it's night time, or because I'm down in the room away from the box on my iPhone.

Is it likely to be the distance? There has never been a problem with the distance with the wifi router.

Do I disconnect my old wifi router? I eventually switched it off.

Looking through the channels (to see what's on before changing) can be a very slow process.. sometimes confusing and not even possible! Is there any easy way?

The response time too when using the remote isn't very fast.

I'm sure the mods will give you a fool's pardon (based on this being your first post in boards.ie) for creating a new thread instead of joining an existing thread which has almost 3,000 posts and where if your post drifts off off the last page, you can expect zero responses.

The Horizon box needs about six distinct threads in this forum given the amount of functionality that's been embedded in one box but for the moment it's confined to a thread that has become one big skip.
