FTTC can only reach speeds up to 100Mbps.

I'll be in dreamland if I eventaully get 10Mbps when they turn it on in my area.

Is the Eircom FTTC better than UPC?

FTTC can only reach speeds up to 100Mbps. FTTH is better than FTTC. Tralee, Co. Kerry doesn't have UPC broadband but FTTC should be fine. I have two questions.
    1. Can FTTC be upgraded to FTTH in the future to reach speeds beyond 100Mbps?
    2. Is the Eircom FTTH better than UPC?

    1. They could run cables direct to your house afterwards, but a country wide rollout would cost a fortune. If it happens its a long long way from happening.

    2. Potentially Eircoms FTTH could offer gigabit speeds (1000mbit) and be ramped up to 10 gigabits in theory.

Realtisicaly UPCs cable cannot go as fast as it relies on copper. But it can do faster speeds than Eircoms FTTC, which is based on much thinner copper.

In reality UPCs product is already very good. Although the upload speeds are relatively slow compared to their fast download speeds. 7upfree's post showing off with the UPC connection really proves that. His or hers connection is 30 times faster at downloading than uploading.

Eircoms products will be good also, 50mbit down and 20mbit up is arguably a superior product as it is much more balanced connection. Eircom can boost that to 100 mbit in the future with little effort. Faster speeds may be even possible with some line bonding.

The future is relatively bright for a lot of people in towns and cities. But incredibly dark for those in rural areas. Unless some sort of USO is agreed or ESB come to the rescue.

What r u all raving about - i've just done a speed test on upc here in leixlip - 92.6Mbps download
    7.26Mbps upload
    ping 14 millisec

phone and 15 channel analogue tv all over the house for 45 euro a month!

    Are u all mad??

Eircoms products will be good!! HA...lol - my sides are splitting - yea 20mbit in your dreams!!!

3150Mbps is broadcast quality video - USA links on various satellites operate between 1500 and 3150Mbps for rebroadcast, I could run a broadcast quality tv station on the current speed - what on earth are u planning to upload?

Eircom haven't a hope - targeting south dublin - areas that they've lost long ago to upc!

"To wrap up their new product launch, UPC ran a download speed demonstration to showcase the capabilities of their network (see picture below).
The connection speed peaked at 1.4Gbps (that’s 1,400 Mbps in case you were wondering). They said that the “last-mile” connection was over regular cable – the same stuff that runs into most of their customers’ houses."

These are decent speeds (none of this European shizzle):

People know about that "showcase". It was a best case scenario test. Those sort of speeds will not be widely distributed ever, over cable

Fibre is a different beast altogether. It can do virtually limitless speed.

Actually UPCs cable is capable of 3Gbps.

Now in order to do that they would have to switch their TV platform totally over to IPTV and would have to use very advanced versions of DOCSIs that use all the available bandwidth, instead the just 8 channels of the current systems.

It is long off in the future before they need to do it, but it is possible in the real world and it will happen eventually.

So UPC will be able to remain competitive even with FTTH.

And don't forget there is no reason why they can't rollout their own FTTH from their neighbourhood cabinets. It would be roughly the same cost and job as Eircom rolling out FTTH to everyone.

What do you call "best scenario"? People said the same a couple of years ago. Cable can never run 100 Meg etc. Yet - here we are......

With the phase 4 cabs coming in at around 30 kilosobs per unit (commsisioned) and with the imminent reduction in the massive subsidy eircom receives from the Department of Social Protection the rollout of phase 4 could well be pushed back to Q1 2014 from Q4 2013 as eircom could find themselves down the cost of 'up to' 1000 Cabinets in 2013.

Phase 5 will likely not be announced until the back end of next year/beginning of 2014 either.

    Is this FTTH?

So if I'm not already getting fibre in dundrum, I won't be able to receive it until December 2013?

I think they currently have some pilot schemes on going. Maybe enquire or check online for details.

no in the main it will be FTTC

Couple of awkward spots, eg Galway City centre ( Galway HPO) will get fibre as there ARE no cabinets in effect. Most of it will be FTTC not FTTH or FTTP

Hell no. Id say not even 2% of those will be ftth.

Is it possible to pay them to run FTTH from the cabinet?
Even if it costs a couple of thousand euro and you were willing to pay for the job?

Depending on how far you are from the cabinet i would imagine it would cost more than a couple of thousand. Having to dig up the roads and stuff would cost a bomb id imagine.

UNLIKELY they will offer FTTH off a cabinet, to do so would require a GPON OLT installation which is costly unless spread across a lot of drops. They may be able to fit a small OLT in each cab, eg a something like this but I dunno.

They would offer the Business Ethernet over Fibre product instead (up to 500mbits or so) which is more costly but less contended and is lit launched from the 'old' exchange not the cabinet.

They DO have spare fibre in each cabinet so the digging would only be to that point.

the rollout of phase 4 could well be pushed back to Q1 2014 from Q4 2013 as eircom could find themselves down the cost of 'up to' 1000 Cabinets in 2013.

He said it was too early to say how the reduction of the subsidy would hit those affected. He said the announcement was “very much not expected”.
“It’s too early to give you a definitive steer. It’s going to impact on our earnings and we have got to find ways to mitigate it. It does force us to have a look at our investment programme.”

I'd say Phase 4 goes to mid 2014 from late 2013 and Phase 5 ( the final phase unexpectedly announced yesterday) goes back to end 2015 from end 2014. Phase three will complete inside Q2 2013 ( was easter) and possibly bang on schedule.

Seems a bit pointless them talking about phase 5 when they haven't got phase 1 up and running

I don't understand why they're not just selling services on any phase that's complete already!

Every week they wait, it's more and more customers gone to UPC in areas where it's available.

It just seems a bit nuts to sit on the infrastructure that's in place.

What exactly are they waiting for?!

A clue? Seriously though, there may be deeper problems than getting this working. Apparently Eircom signed a deal with Amazon AWS to sell Cloud services to Irish businesses. The technology churnalists all recycled the press release without ever thinking to find out what it means. In growth terms, Eircom's web hosting has the turnover of a small sized web developer. This fibre rollout is behind target and UPC, in the meantime, has been pushing higher bandwidth allowances for its new customers. This really cuts the legs from Eircom in those markets. Perhaps the volume of new business is not present in the non-UPC areas and the growing trend of ISPs trying to get users to commit to a one year or six month contract makes shifting to Eircom's new service more difficult.

    Regards...jmcc

    Cockbox I suppose they'll call it. :p

The Launch of the VDSL network also slipped, it is now a 'hope' in H1 2013 according to the CEO, I believe it was early 2013 not so long ago.

    http://www.siliconrepublic.com/business/item/30622-eircom-says-300k-more-homes/

"it is hoped that the network, which is available to all operators, will deliver services to customers in the first half of next year"

Nobod believes their numbers. Phase 2 is largely built cabs deployed the lot.

    http://siliconrepublic.com/comms/item/29365-eircom-names-locations-for
Eircom said once Phase 2 is completed, fibre will pass 250,000 homes and businesses within the 27 selected areas.

But the press releae last week said.

    http://www.siliconrepublic.com/business/item/30622-eircom-says-300k-more-homes/
Eircom has already reached more than 150,000 premises

With mixed message like that even I am confused. It probably means that the areas where eircom did not roll out VDSL units have 100k premises and the more urban areas where they did roll them out contain 150,000 premises. Most of the complete Letterkenny exchange areas is RURAL and has no cabinets at all. Same with Douglas, Shantalla, Mervue , Castlebar Ballina etc.

it's confusing because the first numbers released were compiled from the actually number of customers in an exchange added together....

they didnt take into account those on direct feeds from the exchange etc.. (don't run through a cab)
who initially won't be able to get VDSL until their line is routed through a cab

    hence the drop in numbers

I have seen the eircom GIS system output and it is frankly dismal. But how could they lose 100k D-Sides out of 250k D-Sides, in effect. ???

Anyway they always knew they were not doing the rural hinterlands of these suburban exchanges. If eircom 'lost' 100k out of 250k so far then the much vaunted 1m figure will end up at 750k lines and that is before the cutbacks kick in ( or delays or however they explain it) which will put the 750k back into 2015 or 2016.

750k premises is around 1/3 of all the premises in the state, 2.15m comprised of 2m homes ( inc empties) and at a push 150k business premises.

That will leave them huffing and wuffing to catch up with UPC who will probably reach 750k addressable premises for NGB some time in 2014 ( around when MMDS is switched off) . They can already reach 600k premises with minimum 25-50mbits of which around 500k ( they claim) can get 100mbits.

And then eircom will be off into Pat Rabbitte looking for a subsidy to cover the other 1.5m premises, as ever. :(
