Had a Jackpot bull calf this morning and had a good pull,no jack though.Huge calf but Mom has good wide hips.Id be careful with him on small cows, when I felt the front legs I thought it might be a vet job.Savage calf though, great quarters
stick up a pic if you get a chance, what’s the cow by?

I see Progressive Genetics have some Cottage Devon (DEZ) straws for sale, thought he was gone!

  • Registered Users Posts: 405 ✭✭Donegalforever

I had one bull calf out of Cottage Devon, (and then he was put down).
It was the best CHx animal I have ever had...…...Show quality.

The only consistent think about DEZ was his inconsistency.

Some smashing calves but also some middling ones too

Some calved ok and some were absolute monsters

GHX was a better bull IMO

Have 4 myself, his stars aren’t & won’t be great, but hopefully get a pb heifer

Anyone used the Ch bull clenagh lyle, CH4634 ? He's breed nearly the same as CXY so you'd imagine that he would leave good stock? Thanks

Super figures & looks great in the picture

See he has Mourne Polydora in his back breeding, she must of been some cow.
She’s the foundation of allot of herds

CXY was a super bull too, Euro bred well but too hard calved for most cows. What is the best char bull in Ai at present do ye think ?

Im going to get a few clenagh lyle and see how he goes. He's the nicest looking bull at the moment I think. He's 3/4 CXY so can't be to bad. I'll try a few fiston too but not as many. I'm just a bit afraid that he won't grow into good weight.

One of the best yellow ch bull calves I ever had was out of CF61 ALEX a french bull that had butts of horns that was brought in as had a great maternal pedigree Jonconde or something like that was his dam and was meant to be a superstar. Couldn’t get him the second year but I’d have given him to everything

Ya GPD is a top bull, a proper charolais but again hard calved. Got 1100e for march born weanlings off him last November. He never really took off but i suppose the majority are staying away from hard calving bulls.

    We’d 3 calves born in October, 1 LZF, 1 FSZ & 1 GPD
All 3 are smashers, GPD was the smallest buy far more stylish compared to other 2

Think hard calving depends on cow, gestation, feeding of cow for 6-8 weeks before calving & then bull

That’s a very good point there. You can do a lot to get the cow right for calving. Timing and decision making On assisting is also a big factor
