Today I serviced my car myself....for the first time ever. It was really handy - would have done this for years if I knew how easy it really was. Only problem was I had the wrong oil filter but I'll change that tomorrow after work.

Did you change the oil already? Did you put the old filter back on? Not ideal really.
Also, don't know if there will be a spillage if you take off the filter with the oil filled up to the max.
I'd say have plenty of old newspapers and kitty litter at the ready!;)

    Worst thing happened to me:
Put in the oil, started the car, got no oil pressure.
Forgot to screw new oil filter in place. Near five liters of engine oil on the garage floor. Nice.

I did something similar years, did an epic oil change, forgot to put the oil filler cap back on, a few days later wondered why there was oil flowing down my front bumper from under the bonnet.

Car needed new cam followers or something, expensive mistake

Found the service history for that car last weekend, shocking stuff, 2 replacement gearboxes, 2 head gaskets, all in 70000 miles. Car was rarely below 4000rpm though so not that shocking.

    Ouch!!

Yep, put the old one back in. The filter on my car (a 1.4 Astra 2006) is one of the paper ones that screws into a plastic cover up above the exhaust manifold and *should* not lose much oil if any at all I hope.

You can forget about using it to remove scratches using a cutting polish. You might be able to remove the scratch if you use something like Turtle Wax Safe cut but I've never tried that before using one of those buffers.

The main thing they're used for is taking the work out of applying and buffing wax.

That's not worth a can of cat piss!! You will need a dual action polisher to remove light scratches and swirl marks. If the scratch is deep which most key marks are you will need to touch it in with paint. If you can feel the scratch with the tip of your finger nail it won't polish out!

Have you tried a DSG car yet? While I love mine, I know it's very polarising and some people can't stand it. Wouldn't be great to be stuck in a car for a couple of years when you can't stand the way it drives.

    Yes,
I had a loan of a 140 octavia L&K with dsg while I was waiting delivery of my current car, Had it for around 10 weeks I think.

While I liked it I did find it very boring on a drive. I am a gearstick man. I have owned autos up through the years but I was considering a dsg for a different reason this time round.
To be honest the main reason is that at times with my back ailment the left leg goes a bit dead which results un unsavoury gearchange attempts :(
