Not really garden moths but there were dozens of male Oak Eggar moths flying around up in the Wicklow Mountains on Saturday. Saw a good few females sitting on the heather too.

The wind and rain kept the moths away last night. 3x dark arches, 1x dusky brocade and 1 elephant hawk moth.

    spot the moth...

Despite the breeze, I had more than 100 species in the trap. It was dry and very mild with min of 15C.
Will I post up the list? Still in notebook though.

Are there fewer Hearts and Darts around?

I wonder is it garden grass veneer that I disturb all the time in the front garden.... lots of them around but never stay still to get close enough to get a pic.

The season to tapering off for Heart & Dart...now the Common Rustic agg. season is just getting going. It and Large Yellow Underwing dominate most people's traps during next month.

Quite likely and from now on plenty of Agriphila straminella will be in the mix.

Likewise. I've had 44 species in my garden since starting (some of those not on gms list or not on gms night). A few more island recording nights and I reckon I'd catch up though!

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,319 ✭✭✭Half-cocked

I've 76 species recorded over 2 seasons, but an awful lot of them are only 1 or 2 individuals. Don't seem to have very many numerous species around.

I did GMS last night as I'll be away for a few days.

Low numbers as always but again a few species new to me... including this below. MM I'll assume it's a sallow kitten rather than poplar kitten? Still if it's "only" a sallow kitten is it the first Mayo record? :)

    94F47AD1FB75478782716895B03CB6F9-0000331913-0002447322-00640L-928342FC19644B0F9C2D8F9AF37FC710.jpg

I also had a Garden Tiger and pebble prominent, both first time in my garden and another couple I haven't figured out yet, along with a few Dark Arches, a Poplar Hawk Moth and a Burnished Brass.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

Yes, this is a Sallow Kitten and well done for putting Mayo on the map!

    Some quality looking moths....
I assumed you've managed to see the reflective green scales on the Burnished Brass?

If not take it out into light and at certain angles the green is almost luminous.

Meanwhile, here's a Gold Spangle I got in garden recently.

Yes:) that's why it confused me the first time I had one.... different colour depending which angle I looked at it from.
    Some quality looking moths...

Indeed, a small but interesting catch last night. Here's the Garden Tiger. The kids wanted to rub it's fluffy little head:D

These brown moths that look the same as lots of other brown moths do my head in :o I had this pegged as small square spot but is it too early for second generation?

    Is a Small Square-spot :)
Take a look at flight chart (scroll down)

While 2 broods is obvious in south and east, it's not so clearcut in NW. It appears to be a mixture of double and single brood.

Good night last night - 120 moths, 26 species. 9 Burnished Brass and finally got a pic that showed the colour properly:

    picture.php?albumid=1295&pictureid=10150

But also this Burnished Brass that is the wrong colour! The pic doesn't do it justice, but it's all turquoise blue:
