Can't see it being anything else. There are always anomalies, this being one.

A few more last night on a warmer night. The only "easy" ones were the LBBYUs,

I also had what I thought were a Bright Line Brown Eye, Dark Arches and Double Striped Pug but think it's too late for them?
I had another pale coloured moth that looked a bit like a miller or grey dagger (without the daggers:D) but smaller. Without my book I'm looking at the "what's flying now" pages and not seeing likely candidates. Any ideas?
I also don't have facility for uploading pics just now

So yet another morning of misidentifications :o

Any of these can be on the wing now.

As for the grey one you mentioned, nothing obvious comes to mind.

    I'll await the photos :)

I'll assume I've identified correctly then so :) (for a change).

 it's on my phone... can't find the cable thingamy for transfer so you could be waiting a while:o
I'll keep trawling the pics and see if I can find an obvious candidate.

Caught 'my' Broad Bordered Yellow Underwing again the other night. She's identifiable as the same one by the wear and tear.

    I found the thingamy:)

Is grey shoulder knot a possibility? Or is it something really obvious that I'm missing?

I tend to look at the "what's flying now" sections on these two sites for guidance.

    http://back-garden-moths.co.uk
    http://www.hantsmoths.org.uk/flying_tonight.php

I don't see Grey Chi there... so I'll forgive myself for not figuring it out !
Still haven't found the book :(

How did everyone do this weekend? I had a busy few days/ nights so didn't bother trapping. I noticed lots of (fairly sizeable) moths out while I was driving home late last night... now why don't they make it to my garden!

I put the trap out last night in lieu of friday night and yet again nothing in the trap but caddisflies:(.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

There could have been quite an influx with this warm southerly wind.

Could be a surprise in traps during next few days :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,832 ✭✭✭littlebug

Well I've put the trap out... but I won't hold my breath :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

Just the one immigrant species amongst the 37 species.
But it was same immigrant species that I've been getting last couple weeks anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,832 ✭✭✭littlebug

3 moths, 1 Silver Y, a beautiful Black Rustic and another small pug type that I haven't figured out yet.
So nothing exotic :D but nice to have moths for a change!

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,319 ✭✭✭Half-cocked

Just back from Down and Donegal, caught quite a few species but highlight for me was this Frosted Orange:
    picture.php?albumid=695&pictureid=10722

and also found this Poplar Hawkmoth caterpillar (?):

Anything interesting in the traps over the weekend? On a fairly wet Friday night I just had a wainscot (common I think) so nothing startling here. Well there was one other moth that at first glance seemed like a new one to me and at second glance, having turned my back for a few seconds, was gone

It's calm and mild here tonight so the trap is out again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

Huge influx of moths to south and east coasts last night. Butterflies and a dragonfly in trap as well.
At least one species which was recorded in 3 locations across Wexford and Waterford was previously unrecorded in Ireland.

I couldn't put traps on last night but have some on tonight but don't think there'll be many surprises in them
