Yes, just got confirmation that South 51 has gone into receivership. Thank the lord. There's only so much karaoke that I can take...

Ha! True. Thats a bit of a pity I suppose. Wasnt in there everyweek or anything, but their food was decent for lunch. Dont like to see any business go down the pan.

I thought it was doing quite well.

Should also stop the two lines of cars lined up on both sides of the street I hope. That seemed a real pain for some.

yeah, the lunch was quite decent, but that was another problem for me from a business perspective- lack of focus on core business. Paying for a chef in South 51 is ridiculous. They should just have had a cook, banging out cheap and cheerful food for the masses. Too much, too quickly and a serious case of "jack of all trades...". There's a lot that can be learned about how NOT to run pub here.

The owner doesn't really have any meaningful experience in the industry as far as I can tell, so that severely impacted the business and the direction it took.

Yes, he just expanded into the old Wool Shop, but South 51 was doomed from the beginning. Bars that are on multiple levels rarely work, particularly if the place is not that big to begin with. The stairs takes up way too much space and half the time you feel like you are sitting underneath an ugly staircase!

Instead of expanding into the wool shop, he should have acquired the stationary shop round back and expanded down that way and kept the majority of the bar on the ground level. He could have gotten the building for a song, because it is off the main street- definitely cheaper than the €2 million he reportedly paid for the wool shop.

With all the work that has been going on in the wool shop for the past 6 months, it really puts into question the business acumen and sanity of the owners for me.

True, they seemed to bite off an awful lot more than they could chew and the "themed" nights werent to the taste of many. I honestly thought with the expansion that the place was doing all right, though I guess that could be a common misconception.

Wonder what will happen to that building?

I agree with the look of the place, it was a bit of a cellar.

South 51 tried over the past few months with ""rock bands" playing there during the week and weekend but I guess that didn't work out for them. Was never a fan of the place and I won't miss it, When does it close its doors ?

Seen that today its a shame jobs are lost so there are no chances of it reopening then?

South 51 is up to it's ears in debt with more than a few creditors after them. All of their kitchen and electrical equiptment was repossessed last night too. I heard it was the bank that forced the closure - no confirmation of how true that is though. It is a pity about the jobs gone.

Passed by yesterday afternoon and saw a bloke changing the lock on the front door. That looks terminal.

pity about south 51... wasnt a bad place..used to go there every so often for one or two, the last time being last saturday night and had a look at the smoking area they did out there. so expansion and a good crowd in there, i suppose thats "perception" for ya, you just never know whats going on behind the scenes. Never liked the small narrow corridor on the way in with the bar running all the way down the side...left things a bit cramped but always seemed to have hen parties in there on saturday nights... was a good spot for a late drink and always seemed lively enough but i guess the rest of the week it was dead.

"name it" coming back to where gekko was and opening soon ... did i see on the forum a "mr price" was coming to wexford town? where?

any more news on any more business opening in the town ?

i also think the little street food stall outside cappuccino's is great... they'll be keeping that open every weekend from now on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Lola92

I heard an advert for ken blacks toy store on south east radio yesterday. There was no date given but it said 'opening soon'.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,090 ✭✭✭RadioRetro

A large sign heralding the 'opening soon' of the Fun Palace (I think) amusement arcade/casino now hangs above the windows of the old Joyce's on the quays. It was used as an art gallery during the festival and the windows are now covered with brown paper.

I here today that one of the local hotels is in a bit of bother, but I won't post the name until it is confirmed

  • Registered Users Posts: 293 ✭✭WexfordWarrior

Heard the Paving isnt starting on south main street until after christmas yep. they're just doin the prep work for it now.

so benches outside the pubs on south main street and lots of loading bays etc... you can see from the markings anyway that the street will be mostly pedestrianised with a small slipway through it for cars... im presuming the same as up by aib etc...evening access. that'll be nice when finally finished.

is the hotel in bother in the town or on the outskirts?

Any further developments with regards the amusement place on the quay?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,090 ✭✭✭RadioRetro

Yep, it's being set up as we speak. It was used as art galleries during the festival then the workmen moved in and are working away at the moment. Banner announcing its imminent opening hanging above the windows.

Does that mean Drinagh Court Hotel is in trouble too?

The good-Ken Blacks is open so no trips to Carlow for pressies.

The bad-all the lazy feckers that can't use the empty parking spaces at the back of the car park and abandon cars right at the doors and block up the whole place.
