If the universe is truly infinite then there must be a god somewhere. If its finite then the odds decrease drastically

Right look, if one is able to disprove the existence of an afterlife, then there is no point in believing, having faith in or even discussing matters of religion. And I don't think it is impossible for humans to disprove the existence of an afterlife.

Perhaps my use of the phrase 'stamp-out' was wrong. I don't wish to put in place regime like that of Russia under Stalin or Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge.

How about if their faith (which contradicts facts) starts to effect the way you live. Imagine if you were an atheist living in one of those towns in the 'Bible-belt'. Imagine if your children were being though at school that evolution is false and creationism is total fact. Would you put up with it? The fact is, most people believe what they believe today because they were thought it by their parents and/or other institutions. I would be a 'militant atheist' because I totally disagree with this indoctrination; if the people that hold these beliefs start to effect your own world there is a point where you have to put your foot down and fight back. There are many other examples of this, not just indoctrination of young children intro believing something that has no evidence.

Ehm.., if you were a militant athiest then why the fúck would you
A/ chose to live in a bible belt and
B/ send your kids to a school that taught creationism?

You mean like Irish being a compulsory importand and crucial part of education:D?

    Does the Irish language exist?

But yes I understand your point, I don't think students should be forced to learn Irish if they aren't competent with it.

Because everyone in the world should be the same, obviously.

How about if you had been born and bred in a town (that just happened to be in the Bible Belt) for all of your life. And there was no secular school for a hundred miles. Why should you be forced out of the town because of some people who believe something that denies reality?

Ok, the universe is infinite so there MUST be something out there that denies the laws of physics.

... yeah, I guess you might have to think that one through a little harder.

On that basis, then there must be an infinite number of Gods. Which to choose? Im gonna go for the all-you-can-eat-do-the-fcuk-what-you-want-god. Because, by your logic, he must exist, right?

Only if the universe is infinite

Yes, if the universe is infinite then there is something that could break the laws of physics ...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,629 ✭✭✭raah!

He could rephrase that into the multiverse theory. Which humourously enough is a strong counter to the "fine tuning" argument used by deists.

If there's an infinity of universes with different laws of physics, and these universes make their own universes. Then there could easily be some sort of god in one of those, who makes other universes. Also, it means that all universes have time coordinates at their big bangs, or whatever creation events they have. Just that these are coordinates in the universe from which they sprang.

Also that might all be wrong, but I loves me a bit of casuistry.

    Yeah, fair enough.
The possibility of support for that kind of tyranny was all i was disagreeing with. ;)

Indeed, obvious really. And there's a planet whose lifeform is mattresses. If we can find that planet then we could stop manufacturing mattresses and just harvest them. Infinity is a wondrous thing. If it exists.

I picked the second one - high probability or something.

I'm not a staunch Catholic or anything anywhere near it, but I do believe in God and stuff.
Would go to Mass more often, but my Da and Ma aren't really arsed about religion.

There could be an infinte expanse with the same laws of physics. For the statement to be correct you have to say "the infinite is infinte, and the laws of physics vary across infinity"

Did you get that quote from somewhere, just curious.

Why is this thread called "The Great AH Census of Religion", when it's not actually about religion?

    It's not really great either.

    Absolutely BRILLIANT!Lmao

In the vein of the 'male or female button' thread, why don't we all just have our political, religious, etc. beliefs in our sigs or somethng, for easier categorisation? We could insult each other so much more effectively that way.

Landsleaving: liberal pinko do gooder god fearing atheist right wing fascist drunk babbling idiotic pro abortion anti drugs pro headshops anti abortion pro drugs high sober cheese gay fianna fail labour tories socialist worker party china bisexual america theirry henry ireland nationalist democrat patriot straight philistine peter beardsley

Does that clarify everything into a neat little pigeonhole?

And by pointing out that energy has no weight yet we rely on it every day to boil water yet deny its existence in the human body - thank you

I did not say energy has no weight, nor did I deny the existence of energy in the human body. I was merely pointing out that the electrical energy that flows through our brain/nervous system cannot be weighed/has no weight.

This thread says a lot about the people who post on boards ie. Imagine what the results would be if this poll was of the entire Irish people.
