The Great AH Census of Religion

I'm sure there have been many ''Does God exist'' thread before. However I'd like to ascertain what what people believe using the Dawkins' Scale.

I don't mean for this to be a bitch slapping contest, but seeing as this is probably the busiest forum it makes sense for this to go here. Besides, results won't be accurate if it's posted in A&A or the Christianity forum.

So I ask you to choose one of the options above that represents what you believe, but give a few seconds thought before hand ;)

Here are the poll options in full (had to edit due to character restrictions)
1.00: Strong theist. 100 percent possibility of God. In the words of C.G. Jung, 'I do not believe, I know.'

2.00: Very high probability but short of 100 per cent. De facto theist. 'I cannot know for certain, but I strongly believe in God and live my life on the assumption that he is there

3.00: Higher than 50 per cent but not very high. Technically agnostic but leaning towards theism. 'I am very uncertain, but I am inclined to believe in God.'

4.00: Exactly 50 per cent. Completely impartial agnostic. 'God's existence and non-existence are exactly equiprobable.'

5.00: Lower than 50 per cent but not very low. Technically agnostic but leaning towards atheism. 'I don't know whether God exists but I'm inclined to be sceptical.'

6.00: Very low probability, but short of zero. De facto atheist. 'I cannot know for certain but I think God is very improbable, and I live my life on the assumption that he is not there.'

7:00: Strong atheist. 'I know there is no God, with the same conviction as Jung 'knows' there is one.'

    Which represents you? 532 votes

I cant see those options so therefore they don't exist

There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance take,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

    A planet of playthings,
    We dance on the strings
    Of powers we cannot perceive
    "The stars aren't aligned,
    Or the gods are malign..."
Blame is better to give than receive.

    Chorus
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
    You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
    I will choose a path that's clear
    I will choose freewill.

The options obviously exist regardless of whether you can see them or not.

If polls didn't exist, someone would invent them

I believe that god does exist however

People have an overly simplistic view of "God" they think of him as literally a big man in the sky who judges us so many claim that religion is rubbish. I also think institutionalised religion has damaged gods rep with corruption and molestation etc.

Instead of saying God, it'd be better if you said a higher being, or diety...keeps it open...

We (general Irish people) only call the "diesty" God because that is what most were taught in school etc...look at other countries / religons - they would also probably be taught about a diety, just by a different name

    Also - it's a vertically inclined cutting tool ;-p

I think I'm somewhere between options 5 n 6 not sure exactly, but voted for 5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

No option for 'We are God'.

When you have reached the end of evolution, know all the secrets of the universe, the only thing left to do is start the journey again. We are part of that journey.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,148 ✭✭✭✭KnifeWRENCH

A few years ago I probably would have voted 2.
Having reconsidered my attitude towards life, I'm now at 5.

I definitely no longer believe in an interventionist God. Whether or not there's some non-interventionist higher power out there, I don't know and tbh I don't care.
I'm surprised at the lack of impartial agnostics.

The problem with that option is the word "equiprobable". I'm not an atheist but I cannot imagine an equal probability of God existing than God not existing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,754 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

I find the problem with people saying that they do or do not believe in God don't really say what they think God is or isn't

Example 1: do you believe in a bearded omnipotent and omnipresent creator who watches down on us from above?
    In this case, I'd be a 6.

Example 2: do you beleive in a collective emotional energy that supports us and is supported by us and our emotions?
    In this case, I'd be a 2

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Well in this case I'm referring to the Judeo-Christian God as this generally is what people think of when asked about God, in Ireland anyway!

Of all of my friends, I'd say that I'm the last to be considerered "religious". But, I am quietly confident that God is up there and the afterlife is just waiting for me to join it. It's the strangest thing - I'm very skeptical about most things, but I feel very sure about this. I'm very lucky!

There is a God and we are presently part and parcel of that before and after life

the question is where did that life that infuses our bodies much like electricity infuses a light bulb come from?

"simple as" what? Is that your version of QED.Your statement is merely that, and nothing more. It's completely invalid.

I choose not to believe it.................. so where is this god.Try and offer something useful would ya.Or if you're taking the piss throw in a wink emoticon or something.

There are people out there who make statements as unintelligent as that, who actually think they are being serious.

I think it's safe to assume that people know what I meant by 'God' in the OP and voted accordingly.

Finally, some tangibility.Ok fella. You actually at least brought up physical evidence for your claim. That puts you ahead of all the other pro goddies.Plus there is evidence of a miracle in how he turned a joke like Man U into the powerhouse it is today.

    I still don't think he's god.But he's the top contender so far.

Maybe BOD is God.That'd be flippin deadly wouldn't it Fiachra?

    What about David Blane

    Or Jessica Alba?

I think the census is fairly straightforward, only the title is a little confusing as it says Religion rather than Belief.

I remember starting threads with polls and had posters looking for this.

The OP provided lots of options and a detailed poll, very good effort

Enough with this stupid and unwritten internet rule about atari jaguar on polls.

Is there really a teapot orbiting Saturn?

    (a) Do you believe for certain that there isn't a teapot orbiting Saturn?

    (b) Are you unsure if there is a teapot orbiting Saturn and thus hold an agnostic stance to the existence of the teapot orbiting Saturn?

Or, (c) Do you believe for certain that there is a teapot orbiting Saturn?

Note: All does who do not believe in the existence of a teapot orbiting Saturn or are unsure will be placed in a boiling hot pot of tea for eternity and their pain will increase exponentially forever.
