good concept but it's FOX, so it'll either be dragged out for 21 seasons at which point everyone will hate it, or be cancelled after season 1 just when everyone loves it and it'll be left with a big cliffhanger ending.

i'd watch it if it wasn't a FOX series.

^ it's gonna be expensive....i suspect it'll only get a 13 ep. order and Fox will see how it pans out.

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/news/a243664/terra-nova-comic-con-panel-cancelled.html

The Terra Nova panel at Comic-Con has been cancelled.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the show's producers and 20th Century Fox made the decision because no footage is ready.
Production on Terra Nova will not begin until September and the team behind the series are also said to be wary about revealing too much about the concept.
Terra Nova, which stars Jason O'Mara, focuses on a group of people who time-travel to the prehistoric era to start a new civilisation.
Steven Spielberg is among the executive producers on the project and it is expected to premiere in the spring.

Won't their new civillisation eventually have to deal with the asteroid that hit Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs? I know, I know...I'm nitpicking:)

^ seen that, hmmm...thing is, it *may* be a Glee type deal....premiere the pilot in May for a fall premiere, it could mean they have alot of confidence in it, or it's the type of project that needs alot of time...or a turkey.

Oh dear..it's Flash Forward all over again! http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/news/a276647/david-fury-departs-terra-nova.html

Like FF a producer leaves over "creative differences"...that old line.

    $20 million pilot budget??...holy batwings!

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/news/a282162/terra-nova-pilot-budget-to-reach-usd20m.html

The pilot episode for forthcoming Fox sci-fi drama Terra Nova could cost up to $20m, reports suggest.

The Wrap claims that the budget for the instalment has already reached $10m before filming has begun.

A network insider apparently described the show as a "debacle" and claimed that the rising costs were due to Fox's decision to pay several high-profile writers $200,000 a week to perform rewrites on the pilot script.

"The cost of the show is kind of a moving target," said the source. "They're down in Australia building sets like it's going to be the next Jurassic Park."

Terra Nova was previously delayed until 2011. Executive producer David Fury also departed the show last month over creative differences.

Mido Hamada (24) has joined the cast of Terra Nova, Fox’s time-traveling drama that’ll get a special preview in May before returning to Fox’s schedule in the fall of 2011. Hamada will play Guzman, the head of a security team who also serves as a trusted advisor to Frank Taylor (Stephen Lang of Avatar). This will be a series regular role for Hamada, who played Samir Mehran on the last season of 24.

Besides Lang, Guzman joins the previously cast Jason O’Mara (Life on Mars) as Jim Shannon and Allison Miller (Boston Legal) as Skye.
Fox decided to give the high-concept drama from the auspices of Brannon Braga (24) and Steven Spielberg the same treatment it gave Glee, which was previewed last year after a May episode of American Idol and subsequently rolled out officially in the fall of 2009. The experiment worked: Buzz for the musical dramedy built over the summer and the show had an auspicious beginning.

Filming on Terra Nova isn’t expected to start until next month in Australia. The high-concept series takes place 100 years in the future and focuses on a family that travels back to the prehistoric era. It’s also executive produced by ex-Fox Chairman Peter Chernin, agent-turned-producer Aaron Kaplan, Craig Silverstein (Bones), and Kelly Marcel.

The three child roles in Terra Nova have reportedly been cast.

The new Fox series focuses on a group of people who travel back to prehistoric times to begin a new civilisation.

The show centres on the Shannon family, headed by Jim (Jason O'Mara) and Elizabeth (Shelley Conn).

Entertainment Weekly says that DeGrassi: The Next Generation star Landon Liboiron has now signed up to play their 17-year-old son Josh. Josh reportedly has a friendship with Stephen Lang's character Frank Taylor.

Naomi Scott, who previously starred in the British children's sketch show Life Bites, will play Josh's 15-year-old sister Maddy.

Meanwhile, Alana Mansour will star in the show as the youngest member of the family. Her character Zoe is reportedly smuggled into the time-travelling device.

The team behind Terra Nova is reportedly still trying to fill one series regular role. The show is expected to be previewed in May 2011 before launching properly in the autumn.

More casting news, they cast all the roles now:

Fox has completed casting on its upcoming drama Terra Nova so production can begin next week in Australia. The last actor to join the cast of the time-traveling drama is Christine Adams (The Whole Truth), who will play Mira — a battle-hardened resident of Terra Nova who gets to know the Shannon family. Other actors who have previously joined the high-concept series include Jason O’Mara (Life on Mars), Stephen Lang (Avatar), Shelley Conn (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Mido Hamada (24), Allison Miller (Boston Legal), and Landon Liboiron (Degrassi: The Next Generation). O’Mara plays patriarch Jim Shannon.
The drama bows next May and takes place 100 years in the future.

I know people will say "suspension of disbelief dude " but how would they even be able to breath the atmosphere that existed during the time of the dinosaurs which would have been alot differant I imagine , It might have been more plausible and probably less expensive to set it like 10 or 20 thousand years ago with Mastodons, sabre tooth cats and a brewing conflict between early humans and neanderthals serving as a backdrop to this tale of survival .

This looks interesting, but I fail to see the point of going back a huindred million years to save humanity. Surely it would be sufficient to go back to the 19th century, and make a few changes there? Probably wouldn't have made much of a TV show though. As PhiloCypher says, might be better if they went back a few thousand years.

    New promo:

^ this looks kinda bad, a combo of Jurassic Park, Avatar and Lost....the dinos are poor GCI wise.

TERRA NOVA follows an ordinary family on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a daring experiment to save the human race. In the year 2149, the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped and overcrowded, with the majority of plant and animal life extinct. The future of mankind is in doubt, and its only hope for survival is in the distant past.

When scientists at the FERMI Particle Accelerator unexpectedly discovered a fracture in time that made it possible to construct a portal into primeval history, the bold notion was born to resettle humanity in the past – a second chance to rebuild civilization and get it right this time.

The series centers on the Shannon family as they join the Tenth Pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, the first colony established in this beautiful yet forbidding land. JIM SHANNON (Jason O’Mara), a devoted father with a checkered past, guides his family through this new world of limitless beauty, mystery and terror. Jim’s wife, ELISABETH SHANNON (Shelley Conn), is a trauma surgeon and the newest addition to TERRA NOVA’s medical team. JOSH SHANNON (Landon Liboiron) is their 17-year-old son who is angry to leave life as he knows it behind; upon arriving at the settlement, he finds himself instantly drawn to the beautiful and rule-breaking SKYE (Allison Miller). MADDY SHANNON (Naomi Scott), Josh’s endearingly awkward 15-year-old sister, hopes TERRA NOVA will give her a new chance to reinvent herself. Although Elisabeth’s medical training secured the family a spot on the pilgrimage, a secret involving their five-year-old daughter, ZOE (Alana Mansour), soon endangers their place in this utopia.

Upon the Shannon’s arrival, they are introduced to COMMANDER NATHANIEL TAYLOR (Stephen Lang), the charismatic and heroic first pioneer and leader of the settlement. Taylor, along with his right-hand man, GUZMAN (Mido Hamada), warn the travelers that while Terra Nova is a place of new opportunities and fresh beginnings, all is not as idyllic as it initially appears. Along with blue skies, towering waterfalls and lush vegetation, the surrounding terrain is teeming with danger – and not just of the man-eating dinosaur variety. There is also a splinter colony of renegades led by the battle-hardened MIRA (Christine Adams), who is vehemently opposed to Taylor and his leadership.

Even more threatening than what lies outside the protective walls of the colony is the chilling possibility that something sinister is happening inside Terra Nova. The Shannons will come to suspect that not everyone on this mission has the same idea of how to best save mankind; in fact, there may be forces intent on destroying this new world before it even begins.

^how exactly is a combo of LOST, Jurassic Park and Avatar a bad thing?
There's a massive LOST shaped hole on the telly box these days, so if you can get a something similar while adding Dinosaurs, that sounds perfect. I'm looking forward to this show anyway, and since every other new drama of the past few years have been beyond disappointing, I hope this can be the exception.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭Syferus

The speech was hokey and designed to relay plot points rather than to inspire the settlers, but the effects were fine.

I'd have to see how exactly the time travel conceit works in the show - if what they do in the past changes the future they were sent from it's essentially mass genocide on a planetary level as no one alive in that future could realistically expect to still exist if these settlers are successful in changing history. No matter how messed up the Earth is, how would you square choosing the fates of every single person alive?

If it's a separate time line then it does seem a bit vainglorious, but then again, legacies are something humans are obsessed with in real life. I like that message-in-a-bottle idea much more.

I'll be sure to see what the reaction to it is like, but it's not striking me as something like Boardwalk Empire, or even Prison Break, where I felt happy to jump in blind.

^ if you'd read interviews you'd know going back in time creates an alternate/new timeline....a new Earth if you will, time branches off so you've got two Earth's going + in 20 million years time that big asteroid hits, but again the producers say they address this and have 20 million years to come up with a sollution.

Also the time portal is perfect for dropping in new characters, ala Lost.

well the earth has been spinning for 6 billion years, there have been 7 known extinction events, and homosapians have been around for 200,000 years, i think its fair to say that these are gonna be the first people from fringe :D

Earth 2 with Dinosaurs and Brannon Braga is involved. How the hell does he still get jobs? He screwed up the Star Trek franchise, Threshold was a disaster, FlashForward was also.

My prediction: After a stunning pilot, the plot lines of the show will be advanced in the final few minutes of each episode, the rest will be pure muck. Cancelled after 13 episodes.

It looks entertaining as hell and while the idea is far from the most original out there as long as each week provides enough dinosaur vs human moments then I'll be happy.

All the talk that based on it's pilot episode it could be the most expensive show of all time are forgetting that for that initial 20 mill they have sets and a lot of CGI work which can be reused seriously cutting down the budget for sub=sequent episodes.

I'm sure that's what they intended rather than simply casting an actor based on his own merit. One of you're more ridiculous posts Richard, right up there with your thoughts on Glee pushing a pro gay message.

So, tomorrow we'll find out just how good (or bad) this show actually is!....two hour premiere, tv version of Jurasic Park?, Primeval?, i'll definately be checking this out...i'd like it to be good as i'd certainly enjoy seeing a dino show.

But it's had major problems and delays, scrpting issues etc. - Fox have ALOT riding on this, they've spent a fortune! [apparently the pilot cost $20 million]...they *need* it to be a major hit to justify the upfront cash they spent.

It's only been given 13 eps. and IF does does get renewed don't expect fresh eps. until next season, but we'll all soon see what's what tomorrow.......

    .......will you watch?
