That's not going to happen - nor should it.

Since this project started, and before that, I have been calling for a phased opening.

    Open Tuam bypass first, definitely.

If possible, I'm not so sure about these, but to open next:

Tuam to Annagh Hill, then let traffic flow back onto N63/N17 as rest gets built
Gort to Kiltiernan interchange with N17

Unless forced to, or given a large payment to do so, there is simply no reason for the contractors to do a phased opening. There are no pro's and probably a hundred con's.

Surely the big pro is not having to secure the section from illegal dumping, vandals, joyriders, halting sites, robbery etc. etc.?

    What are the 100 con's?

m17, I read the first 10 or so pages of this thread and didn't see you posting back then. Perhaps you've answered this already, but may I ask are you involved or work on-site this project? You seem very involved and have daily updates. Thanks for your contribution, I'm just curious how you're so involved.

One major concern would be that the N63 is would not be capable of handling the same volume of traffic as the current n17, for any sustained period of time.

It may only be a short section but there are 2 villages and numerous junctions of lowish standard. And all terminated in a T junction, back on to the N17.

Not to mention the extra traffic it would put on the at Athenry road with gets tight and windy in spots and has cussan cross, which is anot accident black spot.

Galway Bay FM should play the Saw Doctors at 5pm this evening just so people sitting in Claregalway sing

"and I wish I was on the M17"

    :)

Have you a link? A search for M17/M18 on that website only returns only one article from 2010 about EIB funding.

Do those bridges over the Railway look wide enough to facilitate Dual-tracking in the event of any future Railway upgrade to Galway?

All rail overbridges are built to take dual tracks, the extra costs of building at this stage is minuscule relative to the costs of replacing bridges if the rail line is upgraded in the future.

PS; looking at some old maps, it appears that the line was dual track at the start of the 20th century.
