There won't be any announcement about an early opening until they can open it.

There's no point in saying now - a year before any possible date - that they'll open it early in case they encounter any issues
a staged opening also would mean that they can connect to the old road at some point, and open intermediate section of new road in stages, but isnt most of it well offline from the old road meaning theres very little chance of opening it in stages ?

They could open tuam to kilternan and then kilternan to gort

Whatever about an early opening, there won't be a staged opening IMHO.

As far as I can see, there's no good reason for the contractors to do so. Completion bonuses only apply for a full finished project.

Opening part of it ahead of time is of no benefit and would be a headache more than anything else

Quick question, the total route length for this stretch (the Gort-Tuam project) is 53km, and they have some of the tarmac in place. But how many kilometres are currently layed?

The report is simply a summary of what's in the latest newsletter, and since you posted the link, we've already read it!

Thanks again for all the photos. In this case, though, I think you've got the labels the wrong way around. It looks like pic3 is towards Tuam and pic4 is looking south.

Yep, this is the DirectRoute newsletter simply rehashed for newspaper print.

The DirectRoute newsletter was likely out of date when it was published, simply due to the size and pace of the project.
