Got 440 and the points this year are 440 but didn't get it hopefully I'll get it in round 2. Was really pissed off, I had basically written off trinity until I got my results and then I realised I might have a chance and now this.......gawd!!

Science is a big course usually every year it drops by at least 10 points from round 1 to round x.

I'd be confident you will get it.

Here's hoping round 2 gets you guys in!

    Can't believe it's official now!

When do we've to make up our minds about which subjects we want to do?

Usually, the first day of freshers week. Wait till Trinity send you out a nice fat envelope with all the info you need in it and please for the love of God don't forget to go to you're subject choice meeting =/

as far as i can remember from last year you either have to do full maths which is 20 credits or basic maths (10 credits) plus foundation physics/geology (both 10 credits)

if you can handle full maths i'd say do it, it can be boring but it keeps your options open for the next few years, i did bio, chem and full maths and nearly all the moderatorships are open to me now

That's my plan! Looking towards neuroscience:cool:

I still can't believe I got science! It was my 3rd choice but I had it first until the end of the year, I shouldn't of changed it I'm over the moon!

Well done everyone and good luck if you're going for round two..if you're dead on the points or only five away I would say ya have it.

I remember I got my cr@p load of envelopes on the 23rd of september it was the day after my debs..dont know if I was late getting mine or anything though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭Jammyc

Ill do that so! Yeah, I have my heart set on Physiology.

Oh actually does anyone have any idea of the books needed? Just out of curiosity!

This is the biology book we used last year http://www.amazon.com/Biology-MasteringBiology-8th-Neil-Campbell/dp/0321543254/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

I bought this chemistry book http://www.amazon.com/Chemistry-Molecular-Nature-Matter-Change/dp/0071283544/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250688803&sr=1-3. There was another book that was recommended, I forget what it was called but you wouldn't need both, they're pretty much the same. The organic chemistry book was http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Chemistry-John-E-McMurry/dp/0495118370/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250689116&sr=1-5

I did Maths Methods and the book that was recommended was http://www.amazon.com/Calculus-Life-Sciences-Marvin-Bittinger/dp/0321279352/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250689229&sr=1-1

If you're doing geology the book will probably be http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Geologic-Principles-Stanley-Chernicoff/dp/0618022759/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_4

I don't think you all should rush out and buy the books now. If I was doing first year again I would probably buy the biology book and the general chemistry book because they are hardly ever in the library, obviously there are so many people in the course so getting books from the library can be a struggle sometimes especially coming up to exams! I never used the maths book so I wouldn't recommend you buy that one. The geology book is good but it's only a one semester course so you won't use it much! My advice to you all would be to wait until you start and go to the library and see which books you like before buying anything. Also, look out for people selling second hand books, there does be loads of notices in the bathrooms!! My local library had a few of the books I needed so check there too. You should only buy a book if you like it and think you will use it so if you find a book that's better than the recommended ones, get that instead! If I think of any more books that I used I'll post again :)

I thought there was a set book? If not that's balls as everyone's working off a different hymn sheet so to speak. As well as that the prices of the books are woeful and it looks like i'll need to start saving now.

What geography book is used do you know?

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭JC06

Well I think most people just buy the recommended books but it's really up to yourself, nobody will be checking like they would have in school! The books are huge so you wouldn't be bringing them into college anyway. I think most people just print out the notes and use them for studying though. What I did was use the notes and if there was something I didn't understand then use the book. The library is good if you can't afford to buy the books right away, there's a little section downstairs where you can borrow the books for 5 hours at a time. I really wouldn't worry about buying books straight away though. I didn't do geography, sorry!

  • Registered Users Posts: 687 ✭✭✭fungie

there is no real need to buy books in first year. if you just use the notes thats all you need.
in physics they buy you a book but i never really found a need to use it.
as for geography the notes are decent and there is no reason to buy the book since it was such a short course, the books are v expensive as well.

Wouldn't bother buying books in first year, since youre discipline will change by JS.

In college, there's no 'set' books. It's not a rigidly set curriculum like back in secondary. The lectures give you the basic facts and in most cases, you're expected to go and find out the finer details for yourself. All the books give the same stuff, but in different ways. The lecturer usually recommends a book that he/she has used to design the lectures and in my experience, the recommended one is often not the best/easiest to understand.

At the end of the day the information in one book is the same as in another. Some are better layed out and more readable than others.

However, you will find that the you will have to do some extra reading. I find this particularly true for microbiology as last years recommended text hadnt really got any of the course material in it, it was the same with developmental aswell actually.

You will find throughout the year that you'll be picking extra books to get a better understanding of certain things that you may find hard to grasp at first.

Hi, just got into natural science for 2009. Yay! Just wondering if I could get a little advice. If anyone could answer any of my questions that would be great.

    1. Is the preliminary chemistry course any good? Also has anyone done first year chemistry who didn't do it for leaving cert? Is it hard to catch up or what?

    2. In relation to subject choice on first year, I was wondering if that's competitive in any way. Are you pretty much guaranteed your choices or could you end up having to do something else. I'm thinking biology, chemistry and maths.

    Thanks. SG.

I did chemistry for the leaving cert so I didnt do the preliminary chem course.
I did go to the end of year lecture however and it was really good, a lot of people came out saying, 'I thought it would be really stupid stuff but I learned a lot out of it'.

I would take it up especially if you've never done chemistry, plus ya meet a lot of new people there aswell.

No it is'nt competitive at all, just make sure the choices dont run into eachother timetable wise I mean. I had to geology and maths instead of geography maths.

But your choices will be fine there the most popular I think.

1: very helpful for me with my lack of LC chemistry, highly recommend

2: first year aint no competition at all, bit competitive come 3rd year but nothing crazy

btw, have course texts if anyone needs them

With regard to this, are second hand course texts hard to come across? And how much should we be expecting to dish out for new/used ones? Talking Bio, Chem & Maths here.

    I second the above question.

Also my cousin gave me her old biology book. Campbell's biology, it has a picture of a white flower on it, she didn't go to trinity and I'm just wondering if this is a suitable book.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

1)You don't need to buy any books. The library has loads of copies.

2)Campbell's Biology is basically the only textbook you'll need for first year biology. It's the one everybody recommends. And it's handy to have around. I still dip into mine from time to time; it's a great way of introducing yourself to a topic before you start it in earnest. So if you really must buy a book, buy that one.

If i want to specialise in Physiology for example, do i have to choose certain subjects in order to attain this goal.

For example: are there 3 subjects that you must do in order to go down this road? Or can i simply choose Chemistry Biology and Geography and specialise in whatever i feel like?

    Cheers in advance,

This should tell you what to pick. For Physiology, you need Biology really.

Cheers for that. Also i was wondering if i'd be able to do the maths module as i only done OL Maths for the Leaving, obtaining a B1.

I get the impression maths in college is always for the HL people. Is there any truth in this?

Im hoping to do the same, I did ordinary aswell. Doesnt say anywhere that its only for HL peeps. Id say we'd need to work like fook tho.

:pac::pac::pac: The work like fook part gives me the shivers, especially when it's maths we're talking about.
