Friday, 21 April, 2023 ____ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 21-27 Apr --

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg below normal.

-- Rainfall will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal, more will fall in eastern counties than further west.

-- Sunshine will average 75 per cent of normal.

-- Winds mostly from an easterly direction, turning more southerly late next week.

-- Considerably warmer in the second week of the outlook period.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will bring increasing cloud followed by a few showers, heavier and more persistent near south and east coasts by afternoon and evening. Moderate easterly winds 30-50 km/hr, highs 10 to 13 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few showers, lows 3 to 6 C.

SATURDAY to MONDAY, all fairly similar days, partly cloudy to overcast, a few showers more frequent in Leinster and east Ulster, east to northeast breezes, and highs each day around 11 to 14 C. Overnight lows will remain 3 to 6 C.

By TUESDAY slightly warmer especially in Munster and south Connacht, south Leinster, where highs may reach 15-16 C. A few showers will continue further north and east with 12-14 C under cloudy skies there.

A slow warming trend will follow with intervals of rain along a warm front around Wednesday and Thursday, highs 14 to 17 C mid-week, and approaching 20 C inland by Friday and the following weekend (29-30 April), with this warmer spell expected to settle in for several more days in early May.

My local weather remains cloudy and quite cold, with a few snow flurries by evening even though it was close to 9 C in the daytime, but our outlook is also warming to almost summer conditions by middle to end of next week, with highs of 24 to 28 C being predicted for all regions of B.C. after a few more days of this late winter chill. It reminds me that we went from that sort of warm spell to a cold winter pattern way back in late October and almost missed autumn altogether so perhaps this will be a reverse version and we'll now miss spring (although down in the valley it has been a bit more like spring than winter for several weeks). In eastern regions of North America the very warm spell may return for a day or two but the change in our weather will be associated with a colder spell in the east next week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will continue partly to mostly cloudy with more showers, and a few brighter intervals, chilly for late April. Highs 10 to 13 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with outbreaks of light rain, northeast breezes 30-50 km/hr. Lows 4 to 6 C.

THURSDAY partly cloudy to overcast, followed by outbreaks of rain, lows 6 to 8 C and highs 13 to 16 C.

A warmer interval will follow by FRIDAY into the weekend of 29th-30th, and this will try to hold on for several more days with a frontal boundary likely to affect northern counties at times. Highs may reach the 18-22 C range during this warmer spell into early May.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast with highs near 10 C. A steady warming trend here will bring us into the same 18-22 C range and some lower elevations may reach 25 C by about Thursday. In our case this may last about a week.

Monday, 24 April, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week ahead remain rather cool, unsettled and cloudy, with a slow warming trend later in the interval. Temperatures will be 2 to 4 deg below normal for several days before a slow warming trend begins. Temperatures could be 1 to 3 deg above normal by next weekend.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers, some rather heavy in Leinster and Ulster, tapering off to isolated showers by afternoon. Highs of 12 to 14 C with light to moderate easterly breezes.

TONIGHT some clearing is likely with slight frosts possible, lows -1 to +3 C.

TUESDAY partly cloudy, mostly dry but some rain by evening in parts of west Munster. Highs 12 to 15 C.

WEDNESDAY intervals of rain, more persistent in western counties, lows 5 to 7 C and highs 12 to 15 C.

THURSDAY partly cloudy to overcast, followed by outbreaks of rain, lows 6 to 8 C and highs 13 to 16 C.

FRIDAY warmer and more humid, showers and a few sunny breaks, lows 8 to 10 C and highs 15 to 19 C.

By next weekend and early parts of following week, some sunny breaks and isolated showers, warm, lows 8 to 10 C and highs 17 to 21 C.

Current guidance suggests this warmer spell will gradually revert to more unsettled and closer to average temperatures, by about Wednesday 3rd of May.

My local weather on Sunday was overcast with a few intervals of drizzle or light rain, and highs near 12 C.

Tuesday, 25 April, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week ahead will include gradually warming temperatures that will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, occasional rain amounting to near normal amounts, and fairly average distributions of cloud and sunshine, with some days quite cloudy after a bright start today.

    FORECASTS

TODAY partly cloudy, mostly dry but some rain by evening in parts of west Munster. Highs 12 to 15 C.

TONIGHT mostly cloudy with occasional rain, 3-7 mm likely. Lows of 5 to 7 C.

WEDNESDAY intervals of rain, more persistent in western counties, as the warm front edges north with variable intensity during the day. Variable cloud with a few breaks at times when not raining, highs 12 to 15 C.

The WEEKEND looks similar with partly cloudy to overcast skies, occasional showers, and rather warm, highs 17 to 20 C.

NEXT WEEK is looking pleasant with high pressure building to the east, so some sunshine each day if not completely sunny and temperatures staying in a similar range of 17 to 21 C for daytime highs and 5 to 8 C at night, with a tendency towards easterly breezes mid-week possibly cooling shoreline districts along the east coast. Eventually a less settled regime will follow by about the second week of May with more cloud in the mix and some rain at times.

My local weather is slowly improving, with a rather cloudy sky, some breaks, and light showers with a high near 14 C. We will be enjoying some warmer days all week and most of next week too by the looks of the guidance and this will keep eastern regions in an unaccustomed colder pattern (the first really sustained below normal spell for that region in a long time).

Wednesday 26 April, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain optimistic with warmer temperatures returning, and just enough rain to keep growth moving forward, with some sunshine in the mix.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather cloudy although there could be a few sunny intervals in eastern counties this morning. Light rain will continue to appear from time to time especially in Atlantic counties as a weak warm front continues to drift north. Highs of 13 to 16 C.

TONIGHT will be mostly cloudy with occasional light rain. Lows 5 to 8 C although it could be colder at times in north Leinster and east Ulster if skies clear briefly.

THURSDAY may bring somewhat heavier rain for a time as a more active warm front develops, mist and fog may become widespread in central and northern counties. Highs of 13 to 17 C.

FRIDAY will turn warmer with a few showers or isolated thunderstorms possible. Lows 8 to 10 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

By the WEEKEND it should be even warmer inland, with variable amounts of cloud and still some risk of showers or isolated storms, lows 10 to 12 C and highs 18 to 22 C.

The outlook for next week remains good, with high pressure nearby and light winds generally from the southeast possibly creating a locally cooler sea breeze for parts of Leinster, highs otherwise near or above 20 C. This pleasant regime will only gradually fade out moving into the second week of May, with a gradual return to more unsettled conditions but little change in temperatures.

My local weather is warming steadily, on Tuesday under hazy sunshine it was in the range of 16 to 20 C in the region.

Thursday, 27 April, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS will be generally warm and it will be turning mainly dry after Saturday, with perhaps 50% of normal rainfall over the first half of this week. Sunshine will become more frequent and by end of this weekly interval should amount to 25% above normal values despite a rather cloudy start.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will bring some briefly heavy showers and mostly cloudy skies, rather warm and humid with highs 14 to 16 C.

TONIGHT will be mostly cloudy with occasional light rain, fog and mist developing. Lows 7 to 10 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers. With any sunshine temperatures will reach highs of 17 to 19 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few showers and chance of a thunderstorm, warm and humid. Lows 10 to 12 C and highs 18 to 20 C.

SUNDAY and MONDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny, hazy and warm, lows near 8 C and highs near 21 C.

The rest of next week is looking pleasant as high pressure will be building up over Britain and a light southeast to southerly breeze will continue in Ireland, lows 6 to 10 C and highs 18 to 22 C.

Eventually this settled warm spell will trend more overcast with rain gradually returning to the mix towards the weekend of the 6th and 7th of May.

My local weather was partly cloudy and warm with a few sprinkles of rain from a passing weak frontal wave leading in the very warm air we have been expecting; temperatures climbed to around 18 C with the sun out for a few minutes at a time. Even warmer temperatures are building up here for about a week to ten days. Will be taking a long overdue break next week and looking for a weather forum guru to fill in then.

Friday, 28 April, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS will be warm and dry with just a few scattered showers today and Saturday. These could be heavy in places but overall 10 to 25 per cent of normal rainfall will occur in the week to follow. Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal, and there will probably be fairly generous amounts of sunshine especially after these first two unsettled days.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to overcast at times, rather warm and humid, with a few showers, and locally heavy downpours are possible, most likely well inland over parts of the midlands. Highs 15 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy and mild, lows 8 to 12 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy with showers and risk of a thunderstorm. Once again the showers are most likely to be heavy or persistent in central counties. Highs 16 to 19 C.

SUNDAY and all of next week will be a warm, dry interval with at least some sunshine each day, and sometimes in some regions longer spells lasting most of the day. Light winds and sea breezes may cool a few eastern and southern coastal areas but otherwise highs likely to be near or even above 21 C. The warmest I could imagine for the week might be around 24 or 25 C by about Thursday 4th.

The latest guidance shows this good spell of weather only gradually breaking down through the interval from weekend of 5th-6th (which could still be quite warm and dry) and the week to follow. So at least the first half of May is looking quite a bit warmer than average; even with a return to normal conditions that would make the month overall quite warm.

My local weather is going into this same mode and has already reached the warm sunshine stage, as Thursday was sunny all day and had a high near 20 C at our elevation and 24 C in nearby valleys. Nights are still rather cool, and there is still snow in the nearby "bush" although it has pretty much disappeared on lawns and around town generally. As there were near-average amounts of snow in the mountains this past winter, a minor flood risk is developing as much of that snow is likely to melt in the coming two weeks of similarly warm weather.

Saturday, 29 April, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week remain warm and, after some scattered heavy showers today, generally dry, with frequent sunny spells developing.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to overcast at first, with heavy showers and a few thunderstorms developing, more persistent in Munster, Connacht and the inland counties of Leinster. By later in the day these showers will be moving towards south Ulster. 10 to 15 mm rainfalls in these counties, closer to 3-5 mm around most coastal and southeastern counties. Highs 17 to 19 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy and mild, with some remnant showers in Ulster. Lows 8 to 12 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy, warm and humid, with isolated showers in similar areas to today, but considerably less extensive. The highs will be around 18 to 20 C inland, 14 to 16 C in some coastal areas with sea fog or low cloud over some outer coastal fringes.

MONDAY to WEDNESDAY will be mostly sunny, partly cloudy at times near coasts, and quite warm especially inland with highs 21 to 24 C. Coastal areas may feel a slight cooling effect from sea breeze or sea fog and low cloud activity, but may also warm up at times close to 18 C. Nightly lows of 8 to 12 C.

THURSDAY to about SATURDAY 6th will be somewhat cloudier with outbreaks of rain at times, but continued warm, highs 19 to 23 C, and nights milder at around 11 to 14 C.

By SUNDAY 7th more widespread showers are likely, perhaps lasting into MONDAY 8th, with highs 18-20 C.

Intervals of mild and dry weather will be mixed with a few unsettled days during the following week, with temperatures returning to more average values.

My local weather was sunny and very warm on Friday with highs of 24-27 C. It does drop down quickly at sunset, and if you have clear skies in the evenings this week, you will notice Venus very bright and prominent in the west, with Mars easy to spot higher up in the southwest near the almost equally bright "twins" (Castor and Pollux). Mars is not as bright as last autumn because it is now quite some distance from the earth instead of our close neighbour at opposition. Thus it now only looks as bright as some less prominent stars and the red hue is a bit more difficult to pick up. This evening the waxing half moon was moving through Leo and by early next week will be closer to the bright star Spica. The moon will be full by around Friday and Saturday 6th of May.

Sunday, 30 April, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY will continue rather cloudy with a few showers mainly over parts of Ulster, Leinster and inland Connacht. Some heavier downpours are possible around mid-day. Highs 17-20 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast, misty and damp, becoming foggy in places that received rainfall earlier, lows 8 to 10 C south, 4 to 7 C north.

MONDAY some cloud in the morning may be stubborn to break, under light winds, but sunshine is likely to become more prevalent by afternoon and evening. Warm inland with highs 18-21 C, but some cool coastal sea breezes, staying closer to 16 C near some coasts as a result.

TUESDAY will also see a mix of cloud and sun, with some showers from a weak frontal band near the western coastlines, although these may not bring rain very far inland if at all. Lows 7 to 10 C and highs 17 to 21 C.

WEDNESDAY may turn a bit warmer with mostly sunny skies and a southeast breeze that could promote cooling sea breezes near east and south coasts. Lows 6 to 9 C, highs 18 to 23 C, but possibly held to about 16 C near onshore coastal districts.

THURSDAY occasional light rain will move through, with a few brighter intervals. Lows near 7 C and highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY variable cloud, showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 19 C.

OUTLOOK for WEEKEND of 6th-7th is changeable with some showers, some brighter intervals, temperatures still a bit warmer than average at least inland.

A more unsettled regime is likely to follow in the second week of May.

My local weather on Saturday was sunny and very warm, in fact the word hot would not have been out of place with highs very close to 30 C in many parts of the region. Golf courses are now open even up at our elevation despite the fact that there is still snow in the bush from 900 metres above sea level up, and local peaks are still covered in what appears to be a thick cover, so it's quite a contrast. Local vegetation is slowly responding to the heat and in valley areas trees are now fully in leaf. We may get a few local thunderstorms and the coast will get a two-day interruption in their warm spell from a frontal system moving slowly inland but the warm spell will rebuild and persist all week here. Meanwhile, New York City despite having had a record warm April has also had quite a chilly week bringing the average back down to just above the previous record from 2010, and on Saturday they had 55 mm of rain and raw winds off the ocean, so it's not much of a sendoff for their new warmest April.

Monday, 1st of May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS are dependent on cloudiness this week, as a rather damp air mass slowly dries out for several days. Where sun breaks through there is potential for temperatures to rise to around 20 C which is several degrees warmer than average. But if cloud holds then it is more likely to be around 16 C. There will not be much rain but it may be quite damp near some coasts. Some moderate amounts of rain may follow by about Thursday night with about half of a normal week's worth likely by next weekend.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather cloudy to start, with patchy drizzle. Some brighter intervals will probably develop late this morning and into the afternoon. Winds quite light and variable inland, with a sporadic northerly breeze near the east coast. Highs around 16 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast, misty and damp, becoming foggy in places, lows 7 to 9 C south, 4 to 7 C north.

TUESDAY will also see a mix of cloud and sun, with some showers from a weak frontal band near the western coastlines, although these may not bring rain very far inland if at all, highs 17 to 20 C. Moderate southeast breezes 30-50 km/hr by evening.

WEDNESDAY will probably start out cloudy with patchy drizzle, and moderate southeast winds 40-60 km/hr, after which it may turn a bit warmer with mostly sunny skies and a persistent southeast breeze that could promote cooling sea breezes near east and south coasts. Lows 6 to 9 C, highs 16 to 21 C, but possibly held to about 14-15 C near onshore east and south coastal districts.

THURSDAY variable cloud, then overcast by late afternoon and evening when occasional light rain will move through (5-10 mm likely), after a few brighter intervals mid-day. Lows near 7 C and highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY variable cloud, showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 19 C. About 5-10 mm rain expected by Friday night into Saturday morning.

The rest of the weekend will be partly cloudy to overcast with some further showers, and Monday 8th or possibly Tuesday 9th may be a rather wet interval on current guidance.

My local weather on Sunday was sunny and very warm again, as a coastal front stalled to our west, ending the warm spell for coastal regions, but the warm air will push back west on Monday and another week of quite warm temperatures will follow. Meanwhile, in eastern regions of North America, very cool and wet, with some severe storms in parts of the southeast, and heavy downpours continuing in the northeast. After a nearly dry first twenty days, April at NYC ended up in the top ten with about twice normal amounts of rain, much of it falling on four days (23rd, 28th to 30th).

Tuesday, 2 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain quite cloudy, with some brighter spells and generally dry to mid-day Thursday, after which it may gradually become rather wet with more frequent rainfall.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with a few sunny breaks, and outbreaks of drizzle or light rain more likely near Atlantic coasts. Moderate southeast breezes of 30-50 km/hr by afternoon. Highs of 15 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast, misty and damp, with occasional rain more persistent near Atlantic coasts, lows 10 to 12 C.

WEDNESDAY will probably start out cloudy with patchy drizzle, and moderate southeast winds 40-60 km/hr, after which it may turn a bit warmer with partly cloudy to sunny skies and a persistent southeast breeze that could promote cooling sea breezes near east and south coasts, highs 16 to 21 C, but possibly held to about 14-15 C near onshore east and south coastal districts.

THURSDAY variable cloud, outbreaks of rain spreading north (5-15 mm likely), followed by a few brighter intervals by afternoon in parts of south and west. Lows near 7 C and highs 13 to 17 C.

FRIDAY variable cloud, showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 19 C. About 5-10 mm rain expected by Friday night into Saturday morning.

WEEKEND variable, some brighter intervals by Saturday afternoon after rain clears, but further rain possible at times Sunday, highs both days 14-17 C.

Parts of next week now looking dry and a bit cooler than average, highs 12-15 C, with a return to unsettled conditions by about Friday 12th and weekend of 13th-14th.

My local weather on Monday remained sunny and very warm, with highs around 27 C. Some patchy thunderstorms are expected in this very warm air mass for several days now, and as I will be taking some time away (starting mid-week) I may have a chance to follow along if they decide to pop up in the central BC region where I am headed. Will post a forecast tomorrow morning before handing over to fellow boards members for a few days.

Wednesday, 3 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY will be rather cloudy, with patchy drizzle but eventually it will turn brighter away from some coasts where low cloud may be more persistent. Rather warm and humid. Highs 17 to 21 C, except 14 to 16 C near some foggy or misty coasts.

TONIGHT will be overcast, with steady light rain spreading into the south. Lows 10 to 13 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud at first in north, overcast south with outbreaks of rain spreading north (5-15 mm likely), followed by a few brighter intervals by afternoon in parts of south and west. Lows near 7 C and highs 13 to 17 C.

FRIDAY variable cloud, showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 19 C. About 5-10 mm rain expected by Friday night into Saturday morning.

WEEKEND variable, some brighter intervals by Saturday afternoon after rain clears, but further rain possible at times later Sunday, lows 8 to 10 C and highs both days 14-17 C.

Parts of next week still appear dry and a bit cooler than average, highs 12-15 C, with a few showers, but there will likely be a return to unsettled conditions by about Friday 12th and weekend of 13th-14th and temperature trends could be backward for the season until fairly late in the month.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny and very warm again, with highs close to 30 C.

As mentioned, taking a break for a few days ...

As MT enjoys a well-deserved break for a few days, I will be filling in for him to keep the daily forecasts going.

The trend ahead is a traditional changeable pattern with standard west to southwesterly winds ushering in rain at times from the Atlantic with sunshine and showers inbetween. Generally mild relative to the time of year most of the period but there will still be a chill in any brisk wind.

TODAY ... Easterly winds strengthening for a time as rain attempts to push up from the south through the day reaching the north by night. There will be some sunny spells around in northern areas but it'll be mostly cloudy. Maximum afternoon temperatures of 11-15C, coolest along the southeast coast in the onshore wind and rain.

TONIGHT ... As the rain pushes further northward, winds will ease and veer southerly in direction bringing the possibility of fog into southern coastal areas. Mild night with temperatures getting down to 7-11C.

FRIDAY ... Fog and low cloud will attempt to clear through the morning in the south whilst rain is likely to continue for a time in the north but will clear by the afternoon. Showers will develop behind from the humidity and warmth of the day. There's the chance some of these could involve thunder. Milder than today getting up to 14-18C, warmest in the east midlands.

SATURDAY ... There will be further threat of heavy showers on Saturday with thunder again being a possibility. Afternoon highs of 14-18C. Fog and low cloud possible along southern coastal regions due to southerly winds.

SUNDAY ... Rain will push in from the west after some sunny spells and scattered showers early on, winds freshening as the day goes on from a southwesterly direction. Afternoon highs of 14-19C, warmest in the east.

Sunshine and showers on Monday likely to be followed by a wet day on Tuesday. Mild again on Monday but cooling down through mid-week with more normal temperatures for the time of year in the low teens. Latest modelling suggests a drier slot on Wednesday will be followed by a return to westerly winds of sunshine and showers by the end of the week.

And for you Star Wars fans out there, May the 4th be with you.

Friday, 05 May 2023... forecasts for Ireland

    Trends:

-- Some rain from time to time but nothing too out of the ordinary expected. Places could have as much as twice their normal weekly May rainfall if they get persistently impacted by heavy showers.

-- Temperature mainly above average but unremarkably so in the mid to high teens most of the time, cooler mid-week next week for a brief period.

-- Sunshine likely to be around average or slightly below par for May.

TODAY ... Overnight rain continues to push northwards and dissipating in the process. Sunny spells elsewhere will be followed by heavy showers developing by the afternoon across the country with some thunder possible. Winds southerly in direction with a milder day in store. Afternoon highs of 14-18C. Always the risk of mist and fog by southern coasts from the humid southerlies.

TONIGHT ... Showers becoming more scattered but still continuing for some with clear spells. Patches of fog in clearer spells and along southern coasts possible. Another mild night with values only getting down to 7-8C.

SATURDAY ... Sunshine and heavy showers with thunder potentially involved. Temperature values similar to today ranging from 14-18C. Winds light in nature.

SUNDAY ... Sunshine early on with some scattered showers but these will be more isolated and lighter than previous days. Skies will cloud over from the west with rain arriving through the day and overnight for all. Highest temperatures up to 19C in the east with closer to 14 or 15C out west in freshening southwesterly winds.

MONDAY ... As rain clears, winds veer westerly and bring back the shower risk with sunny spells inbetween. Afternoon highs of 14-18C, warmest in the inland southeast.

TUESDAY ... Rain will push eastwards through the morning and afternoon. Sunny spells will follow on from behind in the west as day goes on and some light showers possible. Somewhat cooler afternoon values of 12-16C with winds freshening from the west.

LATER NEXT WEEK ... A temporary ridge of high pressure looks like taking hold from the Azores through Wednesday. Previous days showed this ridge as being very flimsy but the latest shows this possibly lasting until Friday now but the shower risk increased for Wednesday. Cooler at first with NW'ly winds whilst the wind will become SW'ly again afterwards bringing the temperature back above normal for the time of year. Unsettled weather likely to make a return by the weekend.

Saturday, 06 May 2023... forecasts for Ireland.

Trends remain the same as yesterday with the coming week being very wet for some, cloudier and milder than average but unremarkably so.

TODAY ... Sunshine and showers again today through the afternoon. Some thunder is possible but convection looks weak in nature today with not as much energy as yesterday. Winds will be light southerly in nature and it will feel warm in the sunshine with above average temperatures for the time of year - afternoon highs reaching 14-18C. Warmest in the midlands.

TONIGHT ... Most shower activity dying off with clear spells for most. Mild getting down to 7 or 8C at lowest.

SUNDAY ... Starting off dry with sunny spells and isolated showers will soon be followed by rain approaching from the southwest during the morning extending to all after nightfall. Southerly winds freshening later with afternoon values of 14-19C, warmest in the midlands and east.

MONDAY ... Cloud and rain will clear through the morning and will be followed by sunshine and showers returning. Moderate southwesterly winds with afternoon highs of 14-19C, similar to previous days.

TUESDAY ... Latest modelling now show the rain that was previously expected to be delayed and further south. There is the chance that this might completely miss Ireland if further changes occur. Similar happened with rain today which is occurring over England. The most likely scenario this morning seems to be sunny spells with rain following later and a cooler day with moderate westerly winds. Afternoon values down to 13 or 14C for most.

WEDNESDAY ... Average temperatures in fairly brisk westerly winds ushering in sunshine and showers. Afternoon values of 12-15C.

LATE NEXT WEEK ... Azores High building in later on Thursday minimising the shower risk and giving a dry period likely to Saturday afternoon followed by rain returning. However, it doesn't look quite as unsettled as it was previously looking with more ridging possible through the following week. No signs of a heatwave mind.

Sunday, 07 May 2023... forecasts for Ireland.

No change in trends. Well above average rainfall for some expected with heavy showers many days. Temperatures coming down closer to average after a mild start and sunshine around or rather below average.

TODAY ... Thick cloud approaching from the west ahead of rain which will become widespread through tonight. Some sunny spells and rather warm beforehand with afternoon values of 15-19C expected, warmest in the east. Winds freshening through today but will die down later.

TONIGHT ... Mild and wet with rain likely to be heavy in nature. Temperatures only getting down to around 12C under the cloud and rain.

MONDAY ... Sunshine and showers with thunder a moderate possibility, especially in the east during the afternoon/evening hours. Torrential downpours are likely. Another mild to rather warm day with values ranging from 15-20C, winds moderate southerly in direction.

TUESDAY ... Looking like another day of sunshine and showers but cooler with winds veering westerly in direction. Rain is still expected to come later in the day extending eastward overnight. Afternoon highs of 14-16C.

WEDNESDAY ... Blustery northwesterly winds with sunshine and showers after rain clears, maximum temperatures of 13-15C.

THURSDAY ... Another day of sunshine and showers with high pressure ridging in later in the day. Afternoon values of 13-16C with fresh northwesterly winds continuing.

FRIDAY AND BEYOND ... There continues to be uncertainty surrounding how much of an influence this flimsy ridge from the Azores has on Ireland. Some of the latest model runs show it completely collapsing very quick and bringing in rain as soon as Friday midday whilst others hold off 'til Friday night. Yesterday it was looking like Saturday afternoon.

With this uncertainty I should not be looking further but there is promise if you would like something drier by mid-May with a stronger ridge from the Azores possible by the third week of the month. This is supported by drivers but it could be delayed. Be patient summer lovers.

Monday, 8 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week ahead will include near normal temperatures, fairly frequent and sometimes heavy showers, and while rather cloudy at times, sunshine may manage to equal average totals (at this point, 5.5 to 6 hours a day is the average or "normal").

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather warm and humid with variable amounts of cloud, scattered showers developing across most regions mid-day and afternoon, with some heavy thunderstorms possible. Winds southwest 30-50 km/hr. Highs 16 to 20 C. Some locally heavy downpours possible, rainfall quite variable in the range of 5 to 20 mm, would look for heaviest showers in south midlands toward north Leinster.

TONIGHT will see partial clearing and fewer showers, with lows 12 to 14 C.

TUESDAY ... Another day of sunshine and showers but cooler with winds veering westerly in direction and increasing to 40-60 km/hr. More persistent rain later in the day extending eastward overnight. Afternoon highs of 14-16C.

WEDNESDAY ... Blustery northwesterly winds 50-70 km/hr with sunshine and showers after morning rain clears, lows 7-9 C and maximum temperatures of 13-15C.

THURSDAY ... Another day of sunshine and showers with northerly breezes, lows 6-8 C, highs 11-15C. Some showers may produce small hail and thunder and eastern counties may see the heavier activity.

FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals and a bit warmer, lows 6-8 C and highs 17-20 C.

OUTLOOK ... Although it may turn a bit cooler again for weekend of 13th-14th, another pulse of warmer air could dominate the following week.

My weather during some time away went from sunny and hot near 30 C to cloudy and cool with rain at times, by Sunday the highs were only 12-15 C. Thanks to sryanbruen for keeping the forecasts coming over the past few days, it was much appreciated.

Tuesday, 9 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain fairly close to average in most regards, somewhat cooler towards Thursday and warmer again by Friday-Saturday. Those will also be generally dry days after several more unsettled days; Sunday and next Monday also look unsettled. The second week of the outlook is calling for some rather heavy rainfalls to develop in parts of Connacht and Ulster as well as across parts of southern Britain, more moderate totals are predicted for Leinster and Munster in this case.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to overcast and somewhat cooler with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Amounts generally 2-5 mm, activity is not expected to be as intense as yesterday but one or two places could see a significant storm. Winds southwest to west 40 to 60 km/hr. Highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with occasional rain, moderate westerly breezes, lows 7-9 C.

WEDNESDAY will be cloudy with a few breaks, and passing showers, with isolated thunderstorms. Winds west to northwest 50-70 km/hr. Rather cool with highs 13-15 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with intervals of rain becoming more showery during the afternoon. Lows 6 to 8 C and highs 12 to 14 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with longer sunny intervals and generally dry, warmer with lows 5 to 7 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

SATURDAY also rather warm with sunny skies followed by increasing cloud, heavy showers possible by evening in western counties. Lows 5 to 8 C and highs 18 to 21 C. Light winds at first, then southerly 40-60 km/hr.

SUNDAY cooler with showers and winds turning west to northwest 40-60 km/hr. Lows 10-12 C and highs 14-16 C.

NEXT WEEK will see some improvement after another round of showers Monday, but while it turns warmer again, there could be some intervals of showers in a partly cloudy to overcast easterly regime. This is expected to trend towards more unsettled weather by the last third of the month of May.

My local weather on Monday was overcast and unsettled with a few showers, and our prospects are for gradual warming and fewer showers each day until we get into another unseasonable heat wave by end of the week. Flood situations around BC are slowly improving, but widespread wild fire evacuations have taken place in Alberta where it has remained rather warm and dry.

Mod Note: Just a FYI, for those who don't miss a day checking in on MTs forecast. Boards is scheduled to be down from around 1am Thursday 11th, as the entire site is moving server (from North American server to European server). This may take up to 24 hours due to volume of data to be moved! Hopefully Boards will be a little better after the move! At least should be a little quicker.

Wednesday, 10 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain similar, temperatures near average to slightly above normal later in the interval, near normal amounts of rain and sunshine expected.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with a few bright spells in southern counties. Intervals of rain will become more showery with a risk of thunder and hail, in moderate westerly breezes 40-60 km/hr. Highs 13 to 16 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy and cool with showers, lows 6 to 8 C.

THURSDAY will be cloudy with a few sunny breaks, and cool, with passing showers in northerly breezes, stronger over western counties, highs near 14 C.

FRIDAY will become partly cloudy to sunny and warmer, with isolated showers towards evening, lows 5 to 7 C and highs 16 to 19 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy and warm, with increasing cloud by afternoon and a few outbreaks of rain by evening and overnight. Lows 5 to 8 C and highs 17 to 21 C.

SUNDAY will turn cooler with rain at times, winds gradually turning westerly then northerly, moderate at times near coasts. Lows 9 to 11 C and highs 14 to 16 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, lows 4 to 7 C and highs 13 to 16 C.

By TUESDAY it will be warmer again with variable cloud and late afternoon, evening showers, lows 5 to 8 C and highs 16 to 20 C.

The warmer trend will continue most of next week with highs close to 20 C. There will likely be some rather heavy showers at times by Friday 19th and Saturday 20th, and a rather variable regime with near average temperatures following that.

My local weather on Tuesday was mostly cloudy with showers more persistent over nearby mountains than directly overhead. It appeared to be snowing on peaks around us and it was cool at our elevation, near 12 C. Warmer conditions are developing for us later in the week.

Tomorrow morning, if boards.ie remains closed during their server migration, you can find my forecast on the Irish Weather Online facebook page at the usual time. I hope all goes well.

Thursday, 11 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain rather warm although today may be slightly below average, and a generally dry trend is developing, once again in contrast to today's expected widespread showers. Sunshine will likely be close to May average values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out partly cloudy and cool in most counties, with some heavy showers moving south from Ulster towards the midlands. All locations are likely to see some rain but heavier amounts of 10-15 mm may be confined to central counties. Isolated hail and thunder possible, highs 14 to 16 C.

TONIGHT will become partly cloudy with showers ending, and clear intervals towards morning. Cool with lows 4 to 7 C.

FRIDAY will bring intervals of cloud and sunshine, and possibly a few widely separated light showers towards late afternoon and evening (possibly just virga where rain does not reach ground except perhaps over hills). Warmer again with highs 17 to 20 C.

SATURDAY partly cloudy and warm, dry for most of the day but some scattered outbreaks of light rain by evening. Lows 4 to 7 C, highs 17 to 21 C.

SUNDAY and MONDAY will be a bit cooler again with occasional showers, more frequent on Sunday, and highs 15 to 17 C. Morning lows 6 to 10 C.

From TUESDAY on, turning quite warm and some rain at times, as a rather slow-moving and weak frontal system plods through on Tuesday night and early Wednesday, followed by more unsettled conditions late in the week, but otherwise, a good deal of dry and quite warm weather that may try to stick around for another week despite some disorganized unsettled factors in the mix. In general terms this is looking like an interval of rather placid weather where any tendencies will be slow to change on a regional basis.

My local weather was again mostly cloudy with showers built up over nearby hills. One of these drifted towards us around late afternoon and released two rather startling thunderbolts that hit very close to home, despite the fact that no rain ever fell from the cloud, but temperatures are slowly rising and will be heading for the 28-32 C range by Friday here.

SUNDAY will become cooler with passing showers and northwest to north winds 30-50 km/hr. Lows 8-11 C and highs 13-16 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy and cool with a few showers, lows 5 to 7 C and highs 13 to 16 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, lows 4 to 8 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy and a bit warmer with lows 5 to 10 C and highs 16 to 20 C.

A dry spell will then last about a week with temperatures near or slightly above normal with highs 17 to 21 C. Around 24th-25th of May this pleasant spell may end with cooler northeast winds and showers.

My local weather on Thursday began to warm up a bit with sunny intervals and a few very light showers, highs around 18 C. A heat wave is developing for this region over the coming week.

Eventually with high pressure more dominant, winds will gradually turn easterly, and this flow will be somewhat unsettled with cloud increasing towards weekend of 20th-21st and into the following week. Warmest temperatures late next week around 22 C but falling back into 17-19 C range with the cloudier regime. Even so, it looks relatively pleasant much of the time for most of the outlook period.

My local weather turned sunny and very warm on Friday with highs 25-28 C across the region, and even higher temperatures are expected for several days.

Monday, 15 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week ahead include near average temperatures, very small amounts of rainfall, and near average sunshine amounts.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with brief and generally light showers. Cool, highs 13 to 15 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy and cool with lows 3 to 6 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast in the north with isolated showers, sunny with cloudy intervals in the south, highs 13 to 16 C.

    WEDNESDAY mostly sunny with lows 3 to 6 C, highs 16 to 19 C.

THURSDAY partly cloudy, isolated intervals of light rain or drizzle mostly confined to western coastal counties, lows 7 to 9 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

FRIDAY to SUNDAY continuing partly cloudy to sunny, warm, highs 17 to 21 C.

Tuesday, 16 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain similar, warm and dry, the main changes I see in guidance today would include a risk of some rain on Saturday in eastern counties, and even warmer temperatures towards the second week of the outlook.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy in northern and some southwestern counties, to sunny in some other regions. Isolated showers could occur in one or two spots, but amounts would be very slight, with highs of 14 to 18 C expected.

TONIG T some clear intervals and otherwise partly cloudy, cool, lows 3 to 7 C.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY should be generally partly cloudy to sunny each day with highs 17 to 21 C, and nights a bit milder around 5 to 8 C.

By SATURDAY mostly cloudy for eastern counties with some rain at times, 5-10 mm potential. Partly cloudy to overcast but smaller chances for rain further west. Lows 10 to 12 C and highs 17 to 19 C.

By SUNDAY another spell of high pressure should begin and this may last for much of the following week and possibly even longer, with a very gradual rise in temperatures indicated, starting around 18 C Sunday and eventually reaching the low 20s later next week.

My local weather was sunny and hot with a rapid increase in cloud from weak thunderstorm activity that remained inactive in most places, but created some dramatic looking skies. The high was around 33 C before the cloud rolled in, and as the cloud remains largely intact it is a much warmer night than earlier in the heat wave.

Wednesday, 17 May, 2023 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain dry, near average for temperatures, and also for sunshine with fairly frequent cloudy intervals giving only small amounts of rainfall.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to overcast, with most cloud of a higher variety allowing some sunshine through. One or two intervals of drizzle or light rain by evening in some northwest coastal counties; highs 16 to 19 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with lows 6 to 9 C.

THURSDAY will be rather cloudy with a weak front dropping small amounts of rain by afternoon and evening. Amounts 1-3 mm and some places will remain dry, with highs 15 to 18 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy and warm, lows 6 to 10 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

SATURDAY variable cloud, some outbreaks of light rain by afternoon and evening, mostly confined to eastern counties. Lows 7 to 11 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy and a bit warmer, lows 6 to 10 C and highs 18 to 22 C.

MONDAY sunny with cloudy intervals, lows 6 to 10 C and highs 18 to 22 C.

Most of the following week will remain a bit warmer than average with highs 17 to 21 C, and mostly dry with at least some sunshine each day.

My local weather was partly cloudy and continued warm but not as hot as previous days, highs reaching 26 C. Isolated thunderstorms once again missed my location. Parts of Alberta are suffering from very poor visibility from forest fire smoke and some of that has reached central B.C. but air quality is good, the smoke is aloft and not mixing down to the ground. In fact it's also quite visible all over eastern regions of North America from earlier spells of westerly flow. Traces of this smoke could reach western Europe in a week or two and create colourful sunsets.

Thursday, 18 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... Temperatures will remain fairly close to average for late May but some days may be rather warm. Cloud and sun ratios will be about average too. Rainfall will be rather slight with a few weak frontal troughs that may or may not produce any measurable rainfall, at roughly two day intervals.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather cloudy in the west and north but partly cloudy in the south and east. Some very sporadic light rain will develop from a weak frontal trough moving slowly eastward. Amounts of 1 to 3 mm will be fairly typical but some places could see only trace amounts (the southeast most likely to remain relatively dry); highs of 17 to 20 C.

TONIG T will be partly cloudy and mild with lows 6 to 10 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny, with some low cloud persistent near coasts. Rather warm, highs 19 to 22 C.

SATURDAY will be cloudy with a few sunny intervals, and once again small outbreaks of light rain may develop, especially over western and later northern counties. Lows 6 to 9 C and highs 15 to 19 C, probably warmest in southeast.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, turning somewhat heavier in some parts of the south overnight. Lows 7 to 10 C and highs 17 to 21 C.

MONDAY variable cloud with a few showers. Lows near 11 C and highs near 19 C.

A few warm and dry days are likely mid-week next week and then a somewhat more cloudy and unsettled but still rather warm regime with a southeast breeze will see the month out.

My local weather remains quite warm (near 28 C) and was partly cloudy to sunny all day on Wednesday. One or two isolated thunderstorms were visible towards sunset, just a few miles east of my location but drifting south and so while quite a nice sight, no rainfall again, other than a trace amount that fell before sunrise. Clearing out now, with a smoky haze.

Friday, 19 May, 2023 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week ahead include near normal temperatures and somewhat below normal sunshine, with rainfall closer to normal in some west-central counties but otherwise generally about 25 to 50 per cent of normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy, hazy and rather warm, highs 18 to 22 C.

TONIGHT will be mostly cloudy, with a little light rain or drizzle in western coastal counties after midnight. Lows 10 to 12 C.

SATURDAY will be mostly cloudy, with a few brighter intervals in the southeast. Rain will gradually spread into west-central counties and stall out there during the afternoon, with 5-10 mm amounts possible. Eventually smaller amounts of rain will reach eastern counties later in the day; highs 16 to 19 C.

SUNDAY will continue rather cloudy and there will be a few showers left over from Saturday's decaying frontal trough, most of these in central counties. Lows 10 to 12 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 18 C.

From TUESDAY to the weekend of 27th-28th high pressure located near Scotland will promote a mainly dry and rather cloudy southeast flow with warmest temperatures in Connacht and inland west Munster where highs may reach 20 C. The sea breeze aspects of the southeast flow will keep temperatures a bit cooler in Leinster, parts of Ulster and coastal Munster, with highs 16 to 18 C.

My local weather remained sunny, hazy and very warm with highs near 27 C. Isolated thunderstorms developed over regions to my north and west but stayed out of range.
