Thanks but I actually bought it a year ago, cant seem to get it the drivers working since I upgraded to windows seven. Im just wondering is it capable of recieving saorview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,528 ✭✭✭Lucious Sweet

Doubt it. It doesn't say MPEG4 anywhere on the info, so without that it won't work.

I know this isnt a tv , but would this be able to recieve saorview?

    http://www.dabs.ie/products/hauppauge-wintv-hvr3000-tri-mode-tv-tuner-card-44WF.html?q=tv%20card

It would work out of box for Windows 7, if the driver is compatible. It's Obsolete and bad value though.

    See http://www.techtir.ie/node/1003625
and review & tests specific Dual Tuner DTT USB stick good for making a Windows PVR, on Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 http://www.techtir.ie/reviews/mobidtv-dual-usb-dtt

Thanks Watty, I just purchased that stick, but I was fooling around with the Hauppauge today and it was the Wintv that wouldnt work with seven so I finally managed to get Win TV7 and low and behold it recieves Saorview!!
The recordings will be in mpeg2 , not sure if this is managable or not but at least its a start. Im not sure now should I cancel my ebay order for the stick or not ,it hasnt despatched yet.

sorry it this was asked b4. seen as the freeview hd tv's and boxes are compatable with soarview just wondering if the irish soarview tv's and boxes are compatable with freeview and freeview hd, if that makes any sense:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,574 ✭✭✭Gerry Wicklow

    NO,
FreeView HD is broadcast using DVB-T2 which is backwards compatible to DVB-T as used by SaorView.

It depends on what brand you buy and the spec as a lot of the 2011 models have both tuners mpeg2/4 like the new Sony EX403 has both and the new Technisat at Tesco also but look for the FREEVIEW HD symbol on the box or the set to be sure.

    See http://www.saortv.info/about/n-i-digital/

Basically many boxes or TVs that are compatible with Irish Digital which uses MPEG4 (or even Saorview certified) will work more or less with Freeview which uses MPEG2 (both are DVB-T), but none are currently known to support "Freeview HD" as that needs a DVB-T2 tuner.

"Freeview HD" boxes and TVs use DVB-T2 with MPEG4 for HD and DVB-T with MPEG2 for basic Freeview, so virtually all work with Saorview (DVB-T and MPEG4 for HD and SD).

All three systems require exactly the same MHEG5 interactive software.

A no more bills TV HD Freesat and Irish DTT in one. You connect a satellite dish and an aerial to it.

You get all these stations http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels

And the Irish stations, RTE1, RTE2 HD, Tv3, 3E, RTE News Now, Tg4.

Did I say there are no bills.

YAY I bought one! Now how do I set up the Irish DTT?

Plug in an aerial and follow the instructions on screen during setup. Select Ireland as the country, the frequency scan is automatic for digital and analogue.

Connect aerial and do Digital Channel Scan.

What kind of ariel? Would a sky dish do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,528 ✭✭✭Lucious Sweet

No a dish will not do. There are loads of threads and posts about aerials on boards, but if you have a even the most basic rabbit ears aerial you should be able to run a scan. The quality depends on your proximity to transmitter, interference and positioning.

My aerial cost 6 bucks in Tesco and with a bit of jiggling and repositioning I can pick up the digital channels perfectly. Analog not so good. If the signal is total crap in your area you might need a bigger aerial on the roof or in the attic.
Good luck and enjoy your new TV.

    Yes and No.

No for the Irish DTT Saorview channels, aerial required.

Yes for the UK FTA satellite channels as this TV has a built-in satellite receiver, Irish channels not available.

The aerial required will depend on your location, your nearest transmitter and distance from that transmitter - outdoor, attic or set-top (rabbit ears).

Word of advice regarding this set. If you set the country to Ireland, you lose the ability to choose the built-in Freesat scan and EPG on the satellite connection and you have a standard free-to-air satellite receiver instead with just now and next EPG data. I know the Cush has his configured this way, but that is his own personal preference.

If you want to have the 7/8 day Freesat EPG, then you must select UK and input a post code, depending on what region ITV you want. I use a London postcode SW1A 1AA, which is a small homestead in the heart of the capital;)

The slight downside of setting to UK is that the TV allocates Saorview channels starting at 800 when you do a terrestrial digital scan. When you flick from satellite to terrestrial digital the first channel that comes up is 800 in any case, with RTE 1 then RTE2 etc. It's no issue, really unless you're in range of Freeview transmitters also. It's trivial to re-number the terrestrial digital channels in any case.

It is probably the RED button.

Should be the Text button. Try on RTE2 (the HD version, not the temp) or RTE News now.

"red" button is for additional applications.

I would say yes. I have tuned in a set in Drogheda and got about 20 Freeview channels on a rabbits ears. Moved up to Dundalk (same day0, and got almost all of them, again with rabbits ears. You should be fine once N Irl transmitter power is increased (as long as your aerial setup is correct).

    No - it's a Freeview set - MPEG-2 only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 269 ✭✭Martin_F

I'm fairly sure both of these are MPEG4 ?

Can any one shed any light on their MHEG5 support? - my gut feeling is yes - but found nothing to confirm it online.

if it's Freeview, which it is, then has MHEG5.

All "Freeview HD" have MPEG4 and MHEG5
All "Freeview" have MHEG5, but only some have MPEG4, and this is not related to set advertised as "HD Ready" or "Full HD".

and "HD Ready Freeview" is NOT "Freeview HD"!

Philips and panasonic switch off MHEG5 if you don't select UK though.
