No prizes for guessing Ray Maguire's (RTE presentation to ISAA) take on "Irish Digital Compatible" ;)

..and you won't be - (in non-technical lingo) as most of you are already aware there was an issue just prior to Christmas 2010 whereby a minor change was made to the way RTE broadcast the new digital signal - this (as you know) meant that you did not have MHEG5 text or alternatively did not have digital radio stations (depending on which country location you chose).

Philips working with RTE resolved this issue - now if you select 'UK' as your country location you will get digital TV/ radio/MHEG5 text where available.

I have spoken to Philips and I understand that they are working on a firmware upgrade to allow this also to be available if 'Ireland' is chosen as a home location, however I have no inside information as to the timescale of such an upgrade, and also once the owner has the information to scan using UK as a location, this is really only a matter of national pride (but yes I would like it as well ;))

In The Philips Shop we have recently spoken to a senior Philips European TV executive and he confirmed that they happy to work with RTE on an ongoing basis to address any issues (and there are none outstanding) and Philips Ireland in my opinion are really committed to the RTE project.

Of course I am just a retailer, and I cannot give an official Philips view but to be fair to Philips, they are aware of their position in the Irish market & they moved pretty quickly as soon as an issue arose.

Thanks again and, as ever give us a shout if we can assist in any way,

    Best regards,

Panasonic don't care about Ireland as the market is too small.;)

Ring the help line they have not got a clue about our problems.

Stick to Sonys and you can't go wrong as long as you register your products they really look after you.

Had a problem with a Sony tv (out of warranty21/2 yrs) 2 years ago and they paid 80% of repair costs.:D

economies of scale i'm afraid, a companies focus on customer issues is directly proportional to the % of their users suffering that problem. lot bigger fraction of philips customers being afflicted than % of panasonics

Panasonic have have their heads stuck up somewhere else rather than down in the sand. I have given up on them at this stage, even a review I posted on their website doesn't seem to have prompted any action. I notice that it's not only their ROI customers with problems, in the UK they seem to be having issues with BBC iplayer upgrades.

HD signal on RTE2. No actual HD content till May, though RTE's upscaller is better than the one in anyone's TV.

    Read all about it http://www.saortv.info/

Very slim TVs (most LED back lit LCDs) mostly have rubbish sound quality due to "notebook" style speakers. You need external speakers/Home theatre Amp with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭franbe

thanks for the quick reply guys so the sony is the new lg77-type-recommendation here.

can i get a very slim wall mount with some hinge action in case of glare ? (sorry off topic)

watty, a quick look shows the led about 2 inches less deep than on a led, if i went with external speakers, do any leds do saor and free sat yet that would match the sony5180 for picture quality ?

Lads I wonder if anybody here could answer a question for me. The young lad has a 19" Nordmende tv model number NM1977W in his bed room does this have a digital tuner. Also can an auto scan be done on this model because I cant seem to figure out how. Thanks

How can you tell on that link if it's compatible? I doubt that it has MPEG4, HE-AAC or MHEG5
This product was added to our catalog on Monday 20 October, 2008.
So likely incompatible, even if Digital at all.
Makes no mention of Freeview or Digital at all, so may even be only analogue.

The advantage of buying from somewhere that sells wine coolers and wooden floors. (doesnt even mention audio/speakers) Probably get better dtt reception on that range cooker they sell, certainly looks more digital:rolleyes:

Ok I have a samsung 656 series 6 and cannot get a digital picture only sound what can I do ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

    Mid June 2008 model

I don't think it's at all compatible. You need a Irish Compatible or ideally Saorview certified Setbox.

There is no method of upgrade to the actual TV set.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭darrenw5094

If we buy a Soarview compatible setbox, do we need to change channels with the new remote control or does our TV auto tune the new channels into the tv channel numbers?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 20,358 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

The new box will have its own remote that will control it. You could get a universal remote to control both. No other choice Im afraid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

The TV is just a monitor, you don't change channel on it ever when you use a set-box.

a bit of a pain then having to have a load of remotes heard that there is a mpg2 to 4 converter that plugs in the tv ariel in for €15.00 will try to find out more:(

Don't bother the converter card (CAM's) will not work with HD signals ... RTE2 is currently HD and RTE1 , TV3 & TG4 will also be in the near/medium term

It doesn't work at all on many TVs even for non-HD channels
Likely to damage TV (runs too hot)
more details on the Neotion CAM adaptor here http://www.saortv.info/terrestrial-saorview/the-black-list/

As jobyrne30 says, will never work with HD channels

Don't even use it if someone gives you one.

    The quality isn't great either.

    Hi,

Argos are stating that the LG 32LD490 TV is not compatible with Saorview.

Can anyone here confirm that it does have a DVB-T tuner and MPEG-4 decoder and MHEG-5 teletext and so it should be compatible with Saorview.

Watty, I think, had mentioned in this thread that TV3 & TG4 (& 3e) teletext will not work on the LG TV series since they do not have MHEG-5 formatted content. Is this the only Saorview limitation with this LG range?

There is no Country setting. The LG xxLD450 is more compatible.
The Teletext is the main issue. It may put the channels in the 800s, not sure. But Most LGs do a best match search (i.e. press 2 only and RTE2 will show if it's the only channel 102 or 802 etc )

Also RTE has suggested that all Traditional Teletext may end after 2012. So after 2012 it will be as compatible as most non-Saorview sets.

Argos are inaccurate on their compatibility list. Strictly speaking so, they are correct.
