Have you checked if it's something to do with your operator? Mobile network issues are not unheard of.

But the 02 dongle's working fine when I plug it in directly to the laptop?

Quite suddenly, my Dovado (after just over a year) has stopped working with internet. Laptop finds Dovado home network fine, but no internet connection.

It's worked EVERY time up to now.............has something changed??

I've tried all the usual stuff, dovado even shows as connected to internet on the portal.....(after re-connecting for ages?), really frustrating.

Need a solution or I'm replacing this router for a 3 router.

    Hi Dr Nick

Have you tried the usual checklist:

Is the Access Point Name what it should be.
    Try the latest UMR firmware
    Try a reset

    Hi Gerry/Dovado.

ever since I updated the firmware to 4.1.1 (and now 4.1.6),
I've found myself rebooting the router a serious amount of times.
Whenever the router is sitting idle (no traffic), I can't connect to any web sites.
My Skype still connects, but nothing else.
It can't be good for the router to be rebooting it about 5 times a day. And it's just not on either. Have you seen this problem before??

Oh and yes, my connection tracker is turned on. It pings web sites fine (set for every 2mins). No settings had been changed since the firmware upgrade.

    thanks.

    Hi Chef-1st

A couple of things to try, if you haven't already....

Do a factory reset by pressing the reset button on the back for 8 secs until there is some flashing on the power light and then release. The go through your configuration again. (You can save your current settings on the UPGRADES->CONFIGURATIONS screen.)

Extend the connection tracker period out to 5mins.

What make/model is your USB modem? Which mobile network?

If the problem persists, please email us at my address on the Commsoft website to escalate this as a support issue.

The skype observation suggests that the DNS is what breaks down as Skype operates without DNS.

    Hello,

So heres the deal, we have a Dovado UMR and a Huawei e180 on the 3 Ireland Network. We have had the UMR for well over a year now and never had any issues we couldn't solve ourselves, but this one has me baffled!

The modem successfully connects to the three network and everything seems fine, I can ping sites, google.com etc. But when I open any browser on any computer inside the network it only gets some of the way in downloading the page. ie. it gets the title and stays waiting until I stop it. I tried other apps, Windows Live Messenger, Xbox Live, peer to peer software, and the such and they seem to work fine. so i'm wondering is it a problem with port 80. I have a server setup inside the router and any port 80 requests get sent to that. Ive disabled and re-enabled all possible causes of the problem, I have reset the router, installed different firmware builds, (initially 3.06, then 4.16, then 4.02) still no good. the modem wouldn't even connect on 4.16. So i'm not fully sure what the problem is, but i reckon its either a port 80 or DNS issue.

I have dynamic DNS configured also, but after disabling that its the same. so I've tried everything i can think of, but if anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them.

    thanks,

    Hi Sean_c

Have a look at the SYSTEM->NETWORK SETTINGS configuration screen. When DNS is misbehaving like this, Dovado recommend the "Safe Settings" checkbox is ticked so that the MTU is set to 1458.

It's a bit of a long shot, but worth a look.

ok, some progress on my situation. I took the sim from the modem, put it into my phone, and got the default access point name. it was 3ireland.ie but this is private which means i dont get my own ip address which means no server for me if im correct! i would obviously prefer a public apn as i get my own ip, but if it aint working i guess it aint worth it! can anyone shed some light on this? thanks.

    Hi DOVADO

I've had some trouble with my UMR recently. Occasionally I've found that I can connect to the router but not to the internet. Strangely, when I log on to the configuration page it tells me that it is connected (green symbol). Doing a soft-reset through the configuration page usually solves this. I have no idea whats causing this problem. I am updating the firmware so maybe that will help.

My question is though, is there any way to command the UMR to do a soft-reset without having to log onto the configuration page and go to the reset buttons? I'm thinking along the lines of a command line command, specific url which would do the whole process or something that could be put into a batch file that can be easily run.

    Thanks.

Sounds very similar to me. Is it a vodafone usb that you have? It seems to be happening very regularly now to me. My network connection goes from "Local and Internet" to just "Local". But when I restart the router its fine again. Its pretty frustrating. I had a three dongle for 2 weeks and it never happened. It doesnt happen when the usb is connected to the computer directly. Anyone know what the bright blue and light blue lights mean on the usb stick cos I see it changing from bright to light blue alot.

I agree, I think it is probably an issue with the router, especially when it indicates itself as connected to the interent but my PC's can't access the Internet without going through a restart. It's like it has to go through a host ip renewal but this occurs so randomly (somethines I'd have to restart several tines a day, sometimes every couple of days) that I can't put my finger on it.

I'm on 3 but Id doubt the carrier makes a difference for this.

FYI, the lights refer to connectivity and reception. If it's an Huawei dongle, flashing means unconnected, solid means connected. Green indicates it's on EDGE, dark blue means is on HIDSP and light blue (cyan) means it's on 3G. These are just the three types of network connection. Obviously 3G is the best format (fastest).

Can I interchange an O2 and 3 modem on a dovado? Haven't succeeded so far. My problem is that 3 is best coverage but tends to drop a lot, while o2 is more stable but speeds are a lot lower.

Also, playing radio in the backround as mentioned on the 3 thread, does this work? My signal is good.

I purchased one of your routers last January and since then I've had absolutely no problems with it at all. However I've never really had any need to upload any amount of big files like photos or video etc. Recently I've opened a flickr account in order to share photos with family and friends but I can never upload photos directly from my laptop as it always times out ( same with youtube and vimeo). For the last couple of months I assumed that the reason for this was because of the fact that I am using mobile broadband and that it was not designed for this. However recently I've changed phone plans and I now have unlimited data on my iphone so I've no need to use the wifi signal from the dovado router anymore as I don't have any reason to fear going over my mobile limit. I can however upload photos directly from my iphone with absolutely no problems. I use O2 as my mobile broadband provider and as my phone provider so I assume the signal is the same coming into the house. I'm now thinking i don't have the correct setting somewhere on my router. I'm not very technical so I'm hoping you may have a solution to my problem. I have tried the solution advised on the dovado website of dis enabling 'Let UMR select safe settings' and clicking on 3G general and restarting router etc to no avail. Any other solutions? I use a sierra wireless modem.

yes, just make sure it is a supported model on http://www.dovado.com/modems and that you're using the correct APN.

As of firmware 4.1.6, you have Ireland as a selectable country in the wizard/modem setup of the Dovado routers. You simply select corresponding operator/APN from the drop-down menu.

If I'm interpreting Dr. Nick correctly, he is hoping there's a way to swap modems/operators without any manual reconfiguring.

There isn't a way to get the UMR to automatically change APNs. The only way this could fly is if both modem/SIM combinations worked with a blank APN on the UMR. It's worth testing how your UMR performs with a blank APN with each of the modem/SIM combinations.

Failing that, you just have to change the APN setting each time and do a restart.

    Hi all,

Thought I'd first start by saying that we have release firmware version 4.2.1 for the UMR and the 3GN routers.

We have also launched a successor model for the UMR, called the DOVADO 4GR: http://www.dovado.com/4gr

Aside from that, I'd like to bring to your attention a really cool desktop app developed by a gent in Sweden who put it together on his free time, Daniel Buecke: http://dovtelcon.buecke.com

This app, the Dovado TellStick Controller (DovTelCon), was originally designed to simplify the Home Automation process, however, can do a bit more; namely: provide you all the status information either locally on the LAN or remotely across the Internet! Very cool! It works on the UMR and 4GR platforms as they both have API ports for 3rd party apps.

You'll be seeing a lot more apps in the coming future..... ;)

    Cheers!

Can I use both usb ports on the umr, one for 3 and one for o2, and switch the APN on the software as above from one to the other or do I need to manually switch them?

Our routers do not support 2 USB modems.

It has to be done manually.

What's the actual scenario you've set up here?

I moved house and switched from o2 to 3 because the speeds are much better. I haven't cancelled o2 yet. I'm finding 3 dropping a lot, more so than o2 ever did at my previous address so I'm trying to keep options open at the moment.
I didn't know I could change the APN from one to the other but I'll try that (APN was blank).

When 3 drops, I restart the umr and sometimes this is ok but mostly not. Any advice on keeping my 3 connection live?!

The Connection Tracker is a watchdog feature within the Dovado router to make sure that the Internet connection is replying. You can read more about it on http://www.dovado.com/hspa

    Thanks

Yes I had looked at that before but was unsure how it worked - thanks, I'll try it.

I have the Dovado 3GN and a 3 branded E1750 plugged into it on the Three network.

Sometimes I get a few days uptime from it, and sometimes I find the modem connected (blue light on) but the light rapidly changing between dark blue and light blue and I found myself unable to do any web browsing.

I was able to have it return to normal by pressing the reset button on the back of the 3GN. The device reset and modem automatically connected.

I wanted this to happen automatically whenever the device encountered a problem so I turned on the Connection Tracker, put in 2 IPs of servers I use, and enabled the option "Redial and Restart (3GN restarts itself after 3 failed redial attempts)"

But again this morning the device had encountered trouble during the night.
The modem was flashing blue and in the DISCONNECTED state.
In the web interface I pressed connect and the device stuck on DISCONNECTED (RECONNECTING) and never actually reconnected.

Using the web interface Restart allowed it to reconnect again.

I *think* the first problem is the modem got itself into a state where it would rapidly switch between HSDPA and UTMS, perhaps two or three times per second. It would be nice to be able to have the router detect this and allow it to do a full reset when this keeps happening.

The second is strange that the web interface and connection tracker didn't help at all.

    Any suggestions?

    It's running firmware 4.2.1.2241 official

Anyone with any ideas on how to make sure the device reconnects? I've had the same problem again this evening. My USB stick disconnected and didn't even seem to attempt to reconnect. It was just in DISCONNECTED state. Clicking Connect in the UI didn't help. Had to reboot the device to get it connect.

Some magic debug switch perhaps that will enable logging to help diagnose it maybe?
