just a few quick questions, ive my med on tuesday and i suffered a fairly nasty burn on my knee and a sprained ankle last wed night playing astroturf soccer, will these come against me? my ankle is coming around and should be fine but the burn on my knee isnt. may sound stupid but genuine questions

    Hey There,

My advice would be not to draw attention to any problem you may have. The last thing you want is to be running around getting letters from this and that specialist to satisfy The Garda Hospital Doctor. Say nothing unless asked.

    Hey,

Mine was a fair bit ago, but I remember filling out a medical form, my advise will be as honest as possible. Shouldn't effect you much for the Med but the PCT is a different story

    Hi ondarack
When did you do your interview

  • Registered Users Posts: 306 ✭✭ondarack

i did my interview in aug last yr. another question is, ive lost 2 stone in the past month and got my bmi below 30( but only just ) but im measuring my bmi using just height and weight but i heard someone say that age is a factor aswell, does anyone know if the gardai use this in thier medical and do they fail people on body fat index? i dont know mine but im just wondering. someone said in a post elsewhere that 250 people got called for medicals, does anyone know if this is true?

You should be fine. Below 30 BMI is all that matters. Dont eat heavily the night before, nothing for breakfast. And make sure you go to the toilet beforehand. You would be surprised how much less you weigh taking this info on board. I had my medical and PCT back in April, my worry now is not to allow my weight to creep back up, for fear of being called to repeat the med due to passing the 6 month shelf life which applies.

It's 12 months for the medical. Done mine the end of 08

Are you sure that its 12 months? One of the lads in Recruitment told me that it is 6 months. Are you waiting that long to start Templemore ? God I am going to be 40 by the time I start.

I think there is one or two of us here who have it done since last year.
Was told by appointments 12 months.

Is this Limbo that everyone is in at the moment Just a sickening place to be in. Any Dublin number that calls my phone now I think that is HQ ringing with a start date, am addicted to Boards.ie, and am obsessed with maintaining the speed limit.

Can you tell us anything more. Such as was there any news on recruitment ? Why are they holding Medicals now ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 229 ✭✭Waiting Game

Also Ondarak just to let you know vast majority are able to get laser surgery done you'll be grand..got it done myself two years ago

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Mainistir

Had the laser surgery done myself last year in anticipation of the medical.....you'll be fine in and out in 15 minutes. The surgeon said i was bordering on not being able to get it done but did it anyway and havent loked back since, literally!!!:D Seriously even if the guards never comes off its worth getting done, costs a fair whack but you can claim a good chunk back in tax.....

I heard you dont fail but may not be able to do some things like drive a squad car. I did not hear this officially but it was talk of boards a little while ago - you could maybe check with the medical docs you get on application around eye sight etc. It is tested for though.

    Weight & Height

You stand on a measuring tool that you step onto (stand as tall as possible!) and the doctor pulls down a ruler like thing that balances on the top or your head to give you your height.

You then step on an electric weighing machine and he types in your height and then this prints out your height, weight and BMI on a receipt type piece of paper - this is then attached to your file.

My BMI was over 25 but he said my build was 'lean' so there are allowances there too.

Were they observent about "making yerself taller" or were u on yer tippie toes?

also leaning backwards on the scales drops the weight, are they observant there too?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 143 ✭✭adrianjc20

    How are things ?

Yes they are pretty observant, they are standing to the side of you, and it would be very difficult to cheat. Best advice is to get the BMI down, rather than trying to fool them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭Geri Boyle

Sorry to hear that Ondarack. Would you consider going and getting a second opinion? Couldnt hurt..

  • Registered Users Posts: 113 ✭✭northside girl

I'm really sorry to hear that, it's really heartbreaking to come so close, especially after all the waiting you guys are going through. Like Blue Belle says, you should definitely get a second opinion! It's not over for you yet and you never know what might happen. Best of luck whatever you decide to do!

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Mainistir

Ditto....thats not the news anyone wants to hear. If its any good to you, and im not namedropping here but i got mine done with eye laser ireland, told me i was borderline if i could get it done or not but i went ahead anyway and turned out perfect....worth a punt anyway

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 229 ✭✭Waiting Game

sorry also Ondarack...i would suggest optical express know people also who were borderline got it done there
