I remember that old photographer on O'Connell Bridge. Another one of them I got to photograph my wedding.
Our school, Westland Row used to have our annual drill display in Shelbourne Park in the 50's. I was never at the Speedway racing there but was at the one in Chapelizod which is now an industrial estate.

It's a pleasure to be eventually able to put some up. As said there are a few repeats. I seam to have a few issues in uploading some of the more original ones but I'll figure it out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 907 ✭✭✭Rashers

Repeats don't matter. If we enjoyed them the first time we'll enjoy them as much, or maybe even more on other viewings.

Really, I've often seen an original photo, and then on seeing it again spot things I didn't see the first time.

Thanks again... and don't worry about repeats.

These may twig with someone so possibly worth putting up. If people are looking for copies or how to get in touch with originals then PM me.
This isn't a pimp for business as it'll be done for free.

That was Lynch's grocers... great for broken biscuits. I was born almost facing it. When me ma sent me for one of their loaves I used to be in trouble when I got home cos I'd eaten chunks of the 'catskin'... a sort of light crust on one end of the loaf. Thanks for the photos.... and the memories.

Great photos of the East Wall Viking Ship. Have you any more of it being built? My Uncle (the 10th anniversary of his death was last month) is in them. I remember being brought down to see it being it built when I was a kid, good times. Would love to see more if possible and show them to my Ma (from East Wall)

    Cheers

No problem at all. Yes I've quite a few of the boat being built and its maiden voyage. I'll have them up over the weekend.

Also if your mother remebers when her Communion or Comfirmation was then I can have a look see if I've the photo for that year. School and year is all I'd need.

The 2nd Fry Cadbury factory to be built. The first was on Ossory road and after this one of course came the coolock. This factory then became Wiggins Teape.

I've seen this picture before. A real gem.

My parents have told me many stories about the old Swastika Laundry.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika_Laundry

"The Swastika Laundry was a laundry founded in 1912, located on Shelbourne Road, Ballsbridge, a district of Dublin, Ireland."

This is a pic taken after a fire on Church Rd in 1970 which burned down a warehouse at the back of these shops. The fire took the shops out too. The fire then stayed in ma\ny peoples' memories as the Lego Fire because the warehouse stored loads of Lego which in turn found its way into the locals' hands. A lot of the Lego was smoke marked.

The amazing disappearing St. Barnabas church. It was dropped and tagged by developers of the site with plans to relocate it adjacent to the new development. It never happened...well not there. It re-appeared years later in a parish down the country somewhere.

Thanks for posting more pics of the Viking Ship humberklog, great seeing them again. If you find anymore, I'd gladly take a look.

And thanks to all who contribute to this thread, great pictures / videos, great seeing them, really interesting, makes you proud to be from this Fair city of ours!!

I have to laugh at that photo of St. Barnabas church. Who in their right mind positions themselves such that a pole that's unimportant in the fore ground goes directly through an object that creates the pictures setting in the background?
Especially as that back then there was a bit more to photography than there is now with digital. I'm not criticising as such as it's those sorta quirks that add a bit of depth to history or personality of the shot.
    Just makes me smile.

You should see the family pics that my mother took of us over the years with her old Ilford. I don't think she ever grasped the concept of looking through the view finder and assessing the shot first - loads of first communions, confirmations, outings, wedding etc. with heads missing or other inanimate objects blocking the shot! :D

    Ye Olde Photostore perhaps?

Well even if he had intended to anyone in their right mind would have taken the extra three steps past the pole.
Mind you I use an old Brownie regularly and this, going by the elevation of the shot, looks as though it was taken with one too (mind you the film size doesn't look right). Well he used a camera that you'd hold at your tummy and eye in the subject through a tilted mirror. It's tricky enough to get bang on. I've had a few ones (maybe not as obvious) go astray just the other day.
