For those who purchased an iPhone today in O2 store, did you just pay the 399 or 499 and walk out with the phone and then activate at home with iTunes, or do you have to give credit card / bank details before they give you the phone

Bank details were needed for those not already on o2 I think.

    Yeah thats it.
I swapped over from Meteor this morning but they had my details from when I paid the deposit.

O2 Rathmines were doing pretty brisk business during Lunchtime, however their system crashed in the middle of it all so maybe it was just the backlog which made it seem packed!

As most people had reserved them there was no rush to the shops this morning so I would imagine a lot of people will pick them up at lunchtime.
As I work in the back of the beyonds and don't drive I got mine at 9 on the way to work. I also wanted to make sure I got the 16GB.
Naturally I had an appointment at 9 this morning so was going to be late for work ;)

i meant copy the contacts from the old phone to the PC via bluetooth, then import into outlook or whatever for copying back to the iphone via itunes.

You will need to do one of two things. Either get all your contacts onto your computer and into Outlook 2007 or higher. iTunes will then copy them onto the phone for you.

Or. Jailbreak your phone and download a package that can copy your contacts from your SIM onto the iPhone.

Don't know if O2 can do it for you though. Maybe they can.

iTunes requires 2003 or later, not 2007 or later

Alternatively, you can copy your contacts to WAB (windows address book) and this will sync with iTunes perfectly.

would've been funnier if you took the photos using an iphone. It's like rubbing it in that you got what they are waiting for :D

aaaaahhh....this is the slowest Friday evening in work ever! I'm just itching to get out of here at 5:30 to pick up my reserved phone. I got a text message from O2 earlier today telling me they had the phone. Gah.

I know how you feel. It will be nearly 6 before I leave here.
Mine is in my bag though.
I got a phonecall from the shop this morning about 8.45 as I walking across the car park to the shopping centre:D
When I got there she had all my details with an 8GB so I changed to a 16GB as they had them in stock.

It sucks that visual voicemail doesn't work at the moment. However, it is going to be supported eventually. The irish apple website says it here: http://www.apple.com/ie/iphone/features/index.html#voicemail
and the guy in the o2 shop in wilton said it will be as well. I thought that maybe they weren't going to support it so that they wouldn't lose out on their 15c per minute racket! I'll still wait for the 3g one though. Does anyone else think o2 will change their tariffs like they did in the UK?

Probably a homeless person, as opposed to queuing overnight.

i was in carphone warehouse earlier today (wont say which store) and asked the young wan behind the counter if she sold many iphones today. SHe said they sold loads and that had some customers giving deposits weeks ago. I said its a pity about the rip off price plan to which she replied "yeah madness all those people getting them today!" :D

Anyone having problems sending email from the Iphone with an "@eircom.net" email address through a BT provider i.e. outgoing server mail.iol.ie port 25? The error message is "unable to connect to mail.iol.ie". I have no problems receiving mail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,890 ✭✭✭cgarvey

You'll need to use o2 SMTP server for outgoing mail. It's common for ISPs to block outgoing mail (SMTP) ports in a bid to reduce spam, forcing all SMTP traffic via their own SMTP server. Not sure that's your answer, but it sounds like it.

There you go - some people going into the shop, forking out 399 or 499 for an iphone, having stepped over a sleeping homeless guy to get into the shop.

Ireland.... it's in an awful state of chassis so it is.... an awful state of chassis.

Those of you lucky people who got an iPhone today, can you let me know how well EDGE works compared with surfing using Wi-Fi?

    Thx

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 869 ✭✭✭Simon201

Well I didn't get one today but I can tell you that an o2 (non-iPhone tarriff) edge internet connection on my iPhone just gave me a speed of 215kbs. I seem to get no more than around 600kbs via my home connection which is a 2mb line and using internet sharing on an iMac. If you are connected to an open or unsecured wifi network then it could vary considerably.

Thanks but I'm connecting to the internet via wifi on the phone on my BT broadband connection at home - Haven't tried to send mail through EDGE yet.

The error message I'm getting is "Cannot send mail The connection to the outgoing sever "mail.iol.ie" failed.

Is anyone else having the same problrm as me?

Just played with an iPhone in the 02 shop in Blackrock. I was pleasantly surprised how fast EDGE was. I expected it to be significantly slower than Wi-Fi but it was bad at all, considering it was browsing the full web and not mobile phone portals.

I asked the shop assistant if you bought and iPhone and signed on the 18 month contract if it was possible to put the SIM on another phone. He said it won't work and that it will be tied to the phone until the contract ends. If you put the sim in another phone, it won't be able to make any phone calls, it will just automatically cut off.

He also said at the end of the 18 month contract, Apple haven't made it clear if they will provide unlock codes. I guess they have 18 months to decide what they want to do.

Torn with getting an iPhone but worried a 3G version will be released later this year. Maybe an imported unlocked version is the way to go. Unfortunately, no one really provides a decent data bundle unless you go with the 18month iPhone one. What should I do?!

Just wondering if anybody has successfully bought one online, giftwrapped it for the extra fiver and got away without having to pay for the first month of the bill?

If O2 have the option available to gift wrap they can hardly charge anymore than the phone price of 399 or 499 given that its a present for somebody, can they?

Ye, owl Jackie Boyle was right all those years ago. If i had 1200 i could think of better things to do with it.

Has anyone with an official 02 iphone try their SIM in another phone. Just curious to know if it works. The O2 store said the SIM is tied to the iPhone but I'm think it's the other way around i.e. the iPhone will only work with an official 02 sim but the 02 sim should work on other phones. If anyone has tried this, let me know.

    Cheers.
