Where did you pull 499 from? the iphone is $399 in america, which equates to 280 euro, a nice saving versus the 380euro from the uk. If you buy one from the uk and bring it here to unlock it you still wont get a warranty. The bottom line is once you meddle with it in any way you lose your warranty instantly, no matter if it's from the UK or the US. If i had to pay anymore than 350 euro for it i simply wouldn't buy it because, in my opinion, it just isn't worth that much considering it's lack of some pretty basic features.
By the way my iphone isn't broken, it's working perfectly now:)

Sorry I misread and thought it was broken - was late when I was reading through all the posts. I got 499 from the http://www.unlockthatiphone.com/ site. I appreciate it is way cheaper in USA but I won't be going there anytime soon or have anyone that could bring one back. So it would seem it's either UK or buying online for now really. I'm only 50% sure I'll get one now and I'm sure if I do I'll be looking for help to unlock it so I'll be a frequent poster :)

It is the old firmware, in that second tutorial, how to i activate it before hand? Also does that sim unlock it?

    Thanks!

As is said, you select the second step from the drop down "start here" icon. Here is step 2-http://www.hacktheiphone.com/74/iphone_step2_windows_74.html

    Step3-http://www.hacktheiphone.com/74/iphone_step3_windows_74.html
There are two more steps but i'm not bothering to link to them.

EDIT: Those guides only seem to be about setting up the iphone for hackers(rather than unlockers) and i can't find anything about unlocking. I did find this other guide though-http://tf.erzz.com/2007/09/19/beginners-guide-to-unlocking-the-iphone-for-any-sim-card/
Sorry i cant be of more help but there's not much on the net about 1.02 unlocks anymore (most have been replaced by the new 1.1.1 methods). There is a really easy way to get around the activation though, look at the following-http://unlockthatiphone.com/activate.php

I've done a bit more looking around the net and found that the new unlock methods may actually work on your 1.02 phone according to this forum in which someone has a new 1.02 iphone-http://www.everythingiphone.com/forum/iphone-modifications/help-with-unlock-jailbreak-15904.html
They link to to this really easy guide, which doesn't need a mac to work;http://www.everythingiphone.com/forum/iphone-modifications/jailbreak-unlock-a-brand-new-1-1-1-iphone-without-using-a-computer-the-final-guide-15895.html

    Hi Dan,

Do you have to pay for SimFree or is it a free download?

Willl this method work to upgrade an unlocked 1.0.2 phone to 1.1.1?

Ive tried this method. I get as far as launching jailbreakme and running the appstapp installer. The phone goes back to the main 'activate me' menu and then a call comes in. I answer that call and then nothing....... It just sits as an open call like that for a while. I restart the phone and it still says 'activate me'.

    Any ideas?

    As in http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=54325066&postcount=793

I had unlocked 1.0.2 and now have unlocked and fully working 1.1.1

You MUST virginise the phone first before upgrading to 1.1.1

iTunes detected upgraded 1.1.1 and restored all my music and other settings perfectly

    Ok for anyone with a brand new 1.1.1 iphone fresh out of the box it is now ridiculously easy to activate and unlock it, you do not need any computer at all (let alone a mac)! You do everything from the phone itself and here is the guide;
    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_step_1.html
That is a very simple step-by-step tutorial with tons of screen shots so anyone can do it now.

    Hi RC,

It aint that easy with 1.1.1, you need to do the following:

Drop the attachment into /private/var/root/library/preferences using SSH to fix loosing EDGE settings on reboot using 1.1.1

It is currently set up for O2 Settings:

To use for Vodafone/Meteor etc.- Edit using a text editor, replacing "internet, gprs, gprs" with whatever the APN, PASS and USER are for your chosen operator.
Does anyone have a step by step guide for this to set up my vodafone data settings? I'm not familar with SSH, do I use windows scp for this?

Apple are apparently releasing the new 1.1.2 european firmware on nov9, will this fix the whole edge settings bug? Does anyone think a minor firware update like this will brick hacked iphones? I know that the previous 1.01 and 1.02 didn't affect unlocked iphones but the major 1.1.1 obviously did.

hi, im just wondering is there a site that sells iphones in us that are still locked as i can only see sites selling unlocked iphones for crazy money..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 267 ✭✭crowej

i am having trouble getting edge/grps working on an iphone.

i even went as far to speak with o2 data support who gave me settings as

    apn: internet
    u/p: gprs

does anyone currently have this working?

It depends on what firmware you have on your iphone, if you have 1.02(old) then you just enter in the apn and password under network settings and it stays there unlike the newer firmware which never saves these settings. If you have 1.1.1 (new) like i do then it's a lot more complicated as you have to edit some files within the iphone using a hacking programme. This is cuurently being asked in the iphone sticky, you should have asked there as you're more likely to get an answer. Apparently apple will be releasing a new european firmware (1.1.2) on nov9th so i'd recommend you wait till then when that bug will hopefully be ironed out. But don't go downloading the new firmware until you've checked on the forum that it won't brick a hacked iphone which you did when you unlocked it.

Nothing to do with SSH etc just go into Settings, General, Network, EDGE and APN is "isp.vodafone.ie", username and password are both "vodafone"

How long is a piece of string? :-) The answer is no one knows until it is released and tested, I would expect them to fix the TIFF exploit though which will make jailbreaking alot more difficult

    Ok, i'm not that retarded. The new firmware has a bug that means even if you enter in all the correct data settings it forgets them when you lock your screen/turn off the phone. My problem with the solution to it(ssh) is a bit complicated as i'm not familiar with scp and ssh;

If that doesn't work out, now that your iphone is jailbreaked you can just use the free anysim, it works really well considering it's freeware.

Only works with Virgin phones, i updated from 1.02 to 1.1.1 without virgining it.I ran it by mistake and it said it was unlocked but still got a error saying it was wrong sim. Then released it was only for virgin phones

What happens if i update an unlocked 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 and the unlock it. Whats the point of virginizing....its too complicated. I dont know how to use winscp. Whats host name and user and password. how am i supposed to know that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

Anyone know anywhere in NY selling these sim free? Considering getting one over there, but I don't really want the hassle of unlocking it and worrying about updating them, as I've heard there are some proper hardware unlocks done that can't be reversed by Apple.

Well I done it...just after finishing. I clicked 'restore and update' in iTunes and it eventually downloaded the update and restored my iPhone and then it turned on to the activation screen. So I followed the instructions to activate it. Once that was done I didn't even have to unlock it, it was still unlocked from the last time. All I did was download a thing in installer that activated YouTube. It was easy and fast and I now have a 1.1.1 iPhone.

    Hi Again RC,

Much Easier fix, on your phone, do the following:

    1: Launch Installer.app
2: Hit "Sources" in the bottom right
3: Hit "Edit" in the top right
4: Hit "Add" in the top left
    5: Add "i.unlock.no"
6: Hit "Install" down the bottom
7: Go to the "Unlocking Tools" Category
    8: Install "Edge Settings Fix"
    9: Restart the iPhone

Thats it, that source also includes the you-tube fix and oneSIM, oneSIM reverses everything that is done by anySIM 1.1 incase you need to return the iPhone to apple etc.

@ PowerHouseDan, just finished fixing your iPhone, just about to go and give it back to ya!!!

As for everyone else who wants to virginize, we have developed a GUI Virginizer app based on the virginizer developed by the iPhone Elite Team. The UTI Virginizer 1.1 will be available for download from our site along with the tutorials to updgrade to 1.1.1 from Monday evening at 6pm.

I'm thinking of getting the iPhone, but what is the situation on the locking/unlocking? If I unlock it does it lock again every-time I sync in with my PC/iTunes???

    No it stays unlocked

If however iTunes ever offers to update the phone's firmware say no until it has been confirmed if that version can be unlocked
