Greetings all,

The Evening Herald this evening report that 2 people (iphone owners) have sucessfull hacked the Iphone using it on the Irish phone network.
Everyhting worked fine except the visual voicemail.

A different software hack now reported to the one earlier today, much more significant as you dont have to do any soldering or any of that messy stuff. Engadget broke the story

Its an easy software unlock so in theory you could buy an iphone in the US and bring it here and use it. I'm not sure but I think it would still have to be used with edge technology of which 02 are the only ones in Ireland that have this.

AT&T in America will not be happy at all

You could use it with ANY GSM network.
Using it on an EDGE network will help you benefit from higher data speeds. Meteor also have EDGE enabled on their network

With the news that the iphone has been unlocked by belfast company http://blog.iphoneunlocking.com/ surely apple will delay the release of the iphone for europe?Apparently the software is going to be released in the next few days they are just clearing up a few things with the lairs....has there been any thoughts in the price of iphone when they get released and will they only be bill pay?

there is still no release date, actually there is no information to be got, well I rang apple ire and apple usa and they could or would not tell me anything...

Does anyone know release dates (i want it for xmas) if it will be available in 4 and 8 GB? how much? a network? Bill or prepay? there are 2 internet companies that are going to sell the iphone sim free...

The IFA Electronic fair is on in berlin next week so everything should be revealed then, What countrys get what providers, Only main European country will get the iphone released at the moment,But saying that with the Software hack only a matter of days of been released should not make much of a difference..What are the 2 companys that are selling them sim free i no of expansys?

8GB iPhone has been reduced to $400 from $600 and it looks like the 4GB has been discontinued. I'm impressed with this move by apple but I'd hate to be someone who bought an iphone recently! At $399 it is exactly the same price as the new 16GB ipod Touch, if I were buying I'd get the iphone without question.

Being honest, I would be surprised if it is released the same time as the europe release, Uk/Ger/Fr will be the first to have it i reckon,Network wise anyway hopefully should be able to get it sim free.

With regards to Uniquephones they wont be releasing the software but they might be ALLOWED in the future.With regards to that website, i dunno what to make from it, it is a Irish Based site, I ordered one anyway dont have to enter any details(payment) so nothing to lose so far.

I have a Good Source that the iphone is being released this weekend, the 16th of Sep wont be the 3g phone which wont be out till next year, but we will be getting the one not sold in US.

It's already been announced (more or less by Vodafone's behaviour!) that O2 will be the carrier in the UK so I doubt that's true it will be at least a few weeks before anything happens there never mind here.

I think they're missing the point I don't think people will be buying iPhones to download music from iTunes in fact the iPhones currently available don't even have that feature.

Hi guys,
I know a girl in work going over to NYC real soon and now that the unlocking software is out there I am seriously thinking about getting her to buy me an iPhone, if I unclock it will it work fine here? I am on the Vodafone network. I know it has no 3G yet but I have that on my N70 and never use it. Will she have to sign a contract etc. over there with AT&T.

Any advice would be good.

She should go to the Apple store and buy the iPhone there - she can get an iPhone there for the same price as through AT&T.

she can, but it will still come with the AT&T contract, hence why everyone is so anxious to get the unlocking to work...

So if she gets it and brings it back all I need to do is unlock it, pop my Vodafone SIM in and off I go? Is there some activation process that needs to be done also?

Why stay with Voda? Better to move to O2 or Meteor... its not 3G its Edge and O2/Meteor have Edge. I wonder if O2 were to be the Irish operator and they put in place the network infrastructure for visual voicemail would the unlocked phones be able to use it.

You would be able to use an unlocked iPhone on any GSM network, including vodafone. It supports EDGE but will fallback to GPRS. It just will be a bit slower..

To be honest I'm not that bothered about EDGE etc etc as I will only use the phone for phone calls, really more interested in the WiFi and iPod as well as the camera, although it is only 2MP.

Is it possible to send text messages on it?

I am going to florida in 3 weeks and was going to pick up 2 and unlocked them going to wait to see what apple do on the 25th and decide then, give it plenty of time to let the unlocking processes see how they go and see how apple react etc.

The way the apple pricing is gone its going to be dollar = euro. So $399 = €399. I doubt very much this will change.

If a 16GB version comes in it will most likely be €599 the old price of the 8GB model, or €499 the price of an touch + 100, the same priceing structure that exists between the 8GB iPhone and touch.
