    Hi RC,

    It aint that easy with 1.1.1, you need to do the following:

    Drop the attachment into /private/var/root/library/preferences using SSH to fix loosing EDGE settings on reboot using 1.1.1

    It is currently set up for O2 Settings:

    To use for Vodafone/Meteor etc.- Edit using a text editor, replacing "internet,gprs,gprs" with whatever the APN, PASS and USER are for your chosen operator.
    Sounds complicated. I don't think i'll bother(is ssh in iNdependence?)! Thanks anyway.
    To get my voicemail button working should I use the method described a good few pages back or is it different for 1.1.1 phones?
    EDIT: Nevermind i used the method in the following guide and now the voicemail button is working:)

    I'm thinking of buying a phone off www.unlockthatiphone.com, I'm wondering what the pros and cons in doing so are. Also can you pay in cash when you meet the rep or is it only through paypal they except payment.

    Thanks,

    M

    Yes plenty of people, it's legit. For the previous poster, the only downside of buying from unlockthatiphone is the price, i got mine for 300euro in NY, they are selling them for way more than that but obviously you're not going to go to america just to buy a phone so that site is one of your few options until the iphone comes to ireland.

    Does anyone know if the summerboard app works with firmware 1.1.1 and can i install it via installer.app?

    I've had a bit of trouble with unlockthatiphone.com

    There customer service is great, except for one thing. I ordered mine a week ago before 4pm and was told it was in the post. Today is Tuesday and still nothing, decided to ring them up and get a tracking number off them. Rang the post office and they tracked it, apparently it had only been posted at 11am this morning. Oh and it wasn't next day delivery, just registered post.

    These guys overall are doing a decent job and they didn't exactly rip me off but that little stunt has made me a bit cautious towards them.

    It's quite a complicated process if you do not have an apple mac computer to unlock it yourself. If you know anyone with a bit of computer knowledge(or a mac!) get them to do it, you have to be patient though as it's quite a long method. The following website is best for unlocking if you want to do it yourself, just follow the link for windows or if you have a mac follow the "osx" link;
    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/

    However if u are really not up to doing any of the dirty work my advice would be to wait as there will be paid unlock methods out soon enough that will really simplify the whole process, the following website used to sell the unlocking software (along with iphones themselves) but since the new firmware (which is preloaded on your iphone now) came out they are still waiting for new unlocking software;
    http://unlockthatiphone.com/
    Maybe give them an email and ask what the story is.

    The shine is beginning to fade off my iphone now after what happened today, i don't think i could recommend an iphone to anyone anymore. Without a warranty it's just way too risky to spend all that money and have it break on you. Today my iphone turned into a brick out of the blue. It was working ok up to that. I took it out of my pocket and tried to unlock the screen as usual, except nothing happened, it would not respond to anything- i couldn't even turn it on or off. I got my friend to ring it and their phone said it was ringing but my iphone was as good as dead-no ring or indication it was even on. It was the same for the rest of the day until about half an hour ago when i brought it home and plugged it into the computer. The pc recognised it but itunes couldn't sync anything with it, the screen was still blank too. I removed it from the cradle and put it back in and then removed it again (i didn't want to reset it as that would probably mess up the unlock). At that point it's screen flashed white and it then went really messed up, the screen was dimming and lighting up and was displaying a frozen image of the contacts menu. It would not respond to anything and suddenly it turned off (the screen was really distorted by that point) and then nothing but the apple logo flashed on and it stayed on this for about 10mins. As this is the signature sign of a bricked iphone you can imagine how pissed off i was (seeing as there is no warranty either!). Eventually it woke up and turned on as normal but i dont want to touch it for fear of breaking it again, i've also discovered there are 3 dead pixels on it now(visible when the screen was showing black for those 10 mins) which added insult to injury (this phone was originally $600- at that price it should be well built with good materials)
    Sorry for the long rant but if my iphone had broken today i would have been extremely angry seeing as i just got it on saturday. Also today i realised the lack of basic functions(even though it has the hardware to do it) like video recording and bluetooth file sharing really makes you wonder if this fancy gadget is worth the stress of buying/unlocking and trying to keep it from breaking is worth it at all. Sure it's pretty looking and has a nice UI but i'm really not sure if i will ever recommend it to anyone.

    Plenty of users are reporting the same as me.

    Btw for anyone who wnats to unlock their iphone, the process is now WAY shorter and less complicated thanks to some new methods(no need for a mac anymore either). Step by step guide here-http://www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_step_1.html

    Has anyone information on when an Irish network will release it?

    Been reading a lot about the iphone and ipodtouch (got to have a go with one in a 3G store last week - great fun!) and it's certainly not without it's short comings but overall it looks like a fun phone. Just thought I'd throw out a few thoughts of my own from reading some of the posts above as it were.

    I see the phone goes on sale in the UK on 9th of November and as far as I can tell from this info here:http://tinyurl.com/3d82em under "Basic Requirements" you can buy one for £269 (approx 380 Euro) and take it home to unlock it.
    Seems a better option to get one from the UK (if you are visiting or maybe have a friend or relation that can send one over) than to pay 499 from the other place?

    Is it worth the risk to have one without the warranty for that price? Tricky to say I suppose but the way I'm looking at it is - out of the millions of iphones made of course there will be a few duff ones so somebody will draw the short straw unfortunatley - it's a lottery. If you want a warranty, you have to get tied into a monthly contract probably for 18 months? That will cost more than buying another one if the original one were to break. what would be the odds of getting 2 duff ones in a row? Slim at best. Don't get me wrong I'd be like a lunatic if I'd just forked out the bones of 400 Euro anD it to break on me like it did to a previous poster but it's an option I suppose and I think I'll chance it! :D

    Where did you pull 499 from? the iphone is $399 in america, which equates to 280 euro, a nice saving versus the 380euro from the uk. If you buy one from the uk and bring it here to unlock it you still wont get a warranty. The bottom line is once you meddle with it in any way you lose your warranty instantly, no matter if it's from the UK or the US. If i had to pay anymore than 350 euro for it i simply wouldn't buy it because, in my opinion, it just isn't worth that much considering it's lack of some pretty basic features.
    By the way my iphone isn't broken, it's working perfectly now:)

    Well, since this is a sticky, here's my notes after a week with the iPhone:-

    1) Purchased in the states 3 weeks ago, EUR300 after tax and US$ conversion. Was expecting it to be firmware 1.1.1 but it was still 1.0.2 so no need to downgrade.

    2) To get the iPhone working, I used a Mac, and the software iTunes, iNdependence, & anySim while following the instructions:-
    www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_step1_mac
    No issues encountered, it just took a while since I was hungover, so now have a working (Voda)iPhone 1.1.1.

    3) I use a PC, but the Mac made it easy to iSync all the contacts off the old Nokia (and SIM) into AddressBook where they can be tidied up and then transferred to the iPhone using iTunes.

    4) Voicemail button was set to 171 by dialling: *5005*86*171#
    It was news to me that voicemail texts are not received on the iPhone so we just check it after missed calls, lunch, etc.

    5) Just missed this website, which could be a one stop shop for fixing new iPhones from the phone itself, using WiFi and a TIFF exploit:-
    http://jailbreakme.com/

    6) Next up adding Installer.app to the phone so we can install/run utilities. Main one Services to toggle Edge and SSH on/off when not required.
    www.iphoneatlas.com/.../putting-installerapp-on-your-111-iphone/

    7) Some useful definitions for this work:-
    Activate - Enable all the programs like Safari, YouTube to run without connecting to iTunes/Apple/AT&T.
    Jailbreak - make the iPhone filesystem Read/Write instead of Read-Only.
    Unlock - make the iPhone able to use wireless carriers other than AT&T.

    8) Then gave iPhone away since I'm happy with my Nokia N95... :D

    Mec

    Hey all,

    I have an unlocked 1.0.2 iPhone, but I want to upgrade to 1.1.1

    Is it possible to upgrade using this tutorial: http://www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_step_1_1.html

    If not, how do I go about it?

    Friend of mine got an iPhone and is having trouble sending text's, when he tries to text it just say error, thought it was his chip so I tried my chip in his phone and still didn't work, were both on vodafone, any thoughts?

    no, i'm pretty sure that's a guide for a fresh out of the box 1.1.1 iphone. There was due to be an easy gui "revirginizer" to be released but it still hasn't arrived. I'd say just wait and keep an eye on the iphone forums of hackint0sh.org.

    Just did this morning - virginized the phone, used itunes to upgrade to 1.1.1, put into restore mode to wipe phone, and then unlocked etc as a virgin 1.1.1 and all working

    how are people finding their network coverage ?

    mine can be a bit hit and miss. I'm with Vodafone and in Dublin, so it should be pretty good. And today I'm not picking up any service at all ??

    ideas ?

    also what about the battery....where can you monitor how full (or low) it is? other than the little icon in the top right ?

    Could you tell me how did you go about virginising (if that's a word!) the phone?

    i have found that the iphone is pretty lousy at network coverage. It's not a vodafone issue either as other people i know with vodafone often have full coverage while i have "no service". However i have found that the call quality is slightly better than my old 3g motorola.
    Alot of things are going wrong today-safari keeps crashing on me (even with just one tab open) and the ipod just stops playing music half way through a song and goes back to the main menu.
    one thing i really am getting to like is texting on it. I can use two thumbs now and type faster than i ever did on my old phone. I'm writing this on it right now.

    i agree the texting and the display of the texts in an almost chat like format is the business.

    have you any idea of checking the battery status ? It's not in the manual at all ?

    I don't know about any other way of checking that but do you find the iphone has a pretty poor battery? I have to charge mine everyday from flat, i hope i don't have a bad battery. I rememeber reading somewhere that the 1.1.1 firmware made many people's batterys run down a lot quicker.

    To activate and jailbreak an iphone it's now really simple but to actually unlock it it's recommended that you have a mac computer (way easier). There is a an excellent step-by-step guide in the following link, when you've finished step 1, select step 2 etc from the drop down list at "start here";
    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_step_1.html
    However, you say you have a 4GB model, as that is an old one (dont make em anymore) it's very likely it will be running the old 1.02 firmware, in which case you might have to use the old unlock methods- just search around the net for "unlocking a 1.02 iphone".
    From the site I linked to there is an old tutorial;
    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/74/iphone_step1_windows_74.html

    If you are unsure which firware version your phone has then read the following-http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/10/03/how-to-check-the-firmware-version-of-iphone/

    Quick Question people, i no i was the one who said that some apple shops wont allow you buy the iphone unless you showed prove of id, anyway with regards the new news, Need id and pay with credit card, do you have to have a us address? or do they just want records and track the imei's? anyone have any ideas going back to Us again next month wanted to pick up some
