Ugh,this whole "there's no X scene in Ireland" yoke drives me nuts. There are so many scenes about the place, you just have to open your eyes and ears and find them.
You can't complain about their being no underground scene just because you haven't found it, surely by its very nature it's not going to be broadcast across the nation's airwaves.
If you're relying on magazines to clue you in,then unfortunately we've a very poor domestic music press compared to other countries, though again that could be blamed on the small population (interesting article on this in last Sunday's Sunday Times Culture section. )
There are so many scenes and clubs etc that it's unreal. I'm not saying all these "scenes" are filled with quality music, infact I'm sure alot of it is pretty dodgey, but there are people out there playing all sorts of music, saying it doesn't exist because you're not aware of it is like not believing in tigers.

There's no tweecore scene in Bangkok. You don't hear them complaining.

Want a scene? Go to gigs and buy music.

I’ve heard a great deal of young Irish bands who’s only fault is that they are clearly only interested in mainstream genres of music and so are not open to any experimentation.

It’s a similar problem with young Irish comedians I've seen who cleary dont read enough and whose experiences all envolve meeting women in clubs....

I invite anyone to prove me wrong by sending a link to a band who don't list the standard a to z of "indie rock" as their influences and who do something more than sound like a pale clone of every other band with vaguely trendy haircuts and tight jeans.

i havent actually gont through all these but i still havent seen the likes of the delorentoes or the coronas. both quality bands, it must be said. as well as them id have to say the anybodies, concerto for constantine. kinda stuck for a fifth. not too sure if half of them are even indie, but its all good really.

Really, if you're a music lover and are in touch with the music scene in Ireland. It shouldn't take much longer than 30 seconds to think of 5 irish bands.

Dunno if the Coronas are that good, they seem popular though. :pac:

By the sounds of it most bands I cant think of have been mentioned quite a few times already. Two that haven't really though are:

    http://www.myspace.com/concertoforconstantineofficial

    http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=136343746

It's only a matter of time before Concerto are touring the world and the anybodies are doing unreal too. I was at the 2fm 2moro tour in Cork. The Anybodies opened and the place was packed and half the people left by the time
the next band had a song or two done.

Incedently it was at that gig I heard Concerto for the first time, recognised Marks voice and did a bit of research. Be brilliant in years to come to say I was at their first tour with about ten people in the crowd:)http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=136343746

I think The Anybodies are a way from being the finished article yet but they are probably the Irish band Id most like to see make it.
If for no other reason than to prove a certain smug wanker completely wrong!

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,558 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

they use to go by the name "the marshall stars" so there might be some releases under that name.

Have to say I haven't heard of the vast majority of the bands mentioned here though.

We don’t have an underground “scene” because we don’t have an established mainstream one operating in this country. We have the glass ceiling effect, bands can only get to a certain level operating domestically.

unfortunately this country is a real tight knit "who you know" closed shop...you can connect a lot of happening bands on the map to a contact (drinking/drugpartner in radio / tv / rip off promotion / ticket company) if you are outside the circle its verrrry difficult......
i saw one of the best bands of my life in thomas reads the other night... they were called "AORTAL" (i dont know them and never heard of them before that) i was blown away..it was sonic genius. But they are struggling due to no connections to said circle of twats...this situation is fact , anyone who argues with it is blind

nearly every band people have mentioned here are a joke by the way..."delorentos"? go listen to real post punk like gang of four and wake the f*** up!
