Have to say really enjoyed Jape and redneck manifesto, world class.
But what about our northern friends???? Loads of great music coming out of there!
Recommend yous have a listen to The Clone quartet, Mary's Great Idea, Jedi Jane Cocaine Explosion (if you like at the drive in etc... they are savage), the Debonares (formally volvograd). Pandakopanda are a brilliant alternative emo-y band.

Played with (retards) in the Voodoo. They made the most of a poor turnout to play a real head **** of a gig, savage lads.

the rags. what a great band imo

Why buy a BellX1 album when you can toss a urinated mattress off the top of Liberty Hall & hear the exact same noise as it lands squelchily on the street below, crushing a tramp on it's way?

Dublin needs to get it's ****ing act together.

I know she technically isn't a band, but Gemma Hayes is really fantastic. Low-maintence, innately musical... I know she isn't ****in BEEFHART but come on fellas. I'd rather her than any other Astral-Weeks-obsessed crooner.

There's a reason Damien Rice's parents called him Damien ya know...:v:

    Redneck Manifesto
    Jape
    Crayonsmith

(The Rednecks count as 3 bands so that's five in total. Or else you could say I'm too lazy to think of two more)

Any 5 from the following, depending on your definition of indie and whether or not you include NI:

    Whipping Boy
    giveamanakick
    The Things
    Ten Past Seven
    Sultans of Ping FC
    Therapy?
    Neosupervital
    Humanzi
    Waiting Room
    Red Organ Serpent Sound
    Stanley Super 800

    Oh, and Jinx Lennon.

They split up ages ago. Weren't very good though.

This year's Faction compilation tells you all (well, most) of what you need to know about this year's brilliant scene.

    The Immediate
    The Marshals
    DC Pakt
    The Things
    Betamax Format
    Red Organ Serpent Sound
    Humanzi
    Delorentos
    Director
    Mainline
    Republic of Loose

The best hits are coming out next week (in time for Christmas) - it's called Jangly Bits and All the Hits
Should be on sale in Tower etc., etc., etc.

As far as I know, Anything Goes will be bringing out some solo material (under the moniker The Chaste Garibaldi, while Sunny Mooney and L. Casei Immunitas have formed another band called J. Cloth and the Soggy Wipes).

For me, the best indie bands in Ireland (or from Ireland!)...
The Dudley Corporation are top class.
The Rednecks and the Jimmy Cake (kind of a no-brainer)
United Bible Studies are the best live act - by a country mile.
House of Mexico are pretty darn good too (they are indie!).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,731 ✭✭✭DadaKopf

Ahh, yes... House of Mexico. Eases the pain.

I rate CH-1, but every time I've seen them there seems to be a triumph of style over substance. They seem very conscious of being cool or something.

I agree about the Rags, on record, at least, they're good, but live I cannot get past the frontman's ego. It irritates me to the point of distracting me from the music. I've never seen a bigger Thom Yorke wannabe.

Oh, and I'd like to add Michael Knight to my list. Why they're already not huge is a travesty.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the rest of them, but I know the guitarist has gone solo. He's playing at the Simon Community gig in Whelan's on the 22nd, I think.
