I have been slacking on this of late, was about to get my first chocobo :P. Need to get my ass back in as i want to play as a machinest class.

The grinding needed to level other classes once the main quests are done is what made me stop playing this, it takes aaaaages :(

Anyway, might return for up coming expansion, i did like a lot of what the game had to offer. Just a bit too much of a grind if ya wanna level a different DPS :(

It really doesn't, not compared to others. I'm levelling a MNK in WoW out of boredom and it'll take longer to do that than it will to eat your XP food, do your daily roulettes and maybe some leves in FFXIV. It is also infinitely faster if you're levelling a Tank or Healer (for obvious reasons) - I was very happy to spam dungeons. Faster still if you have collector edition items, faster if you're in a guild who keeps the XP buff applied, and faster again if you've got your Command Squad done up and are earning XP scrolls each week. It never took me long to level other classes in FFXIV once you get how it clicks, whereas in WoW you really do feel like paying for a boost would just save you hassle, and even then those last 10 levels feel like an eternity.

I found WoW more fluid though, you arent scrounging for quests in wow. I actually cant really remember what pissed me off in FF, i just remember that i was just doing the dungeon/raid dailies for the sick xp, and then anything else felt like a chore..

But yeah i had the wow leveling down to a fine art and with FF i had trouble absorbing everything, found myself asking what guildies likely deemed stupid questions a lot :D so yeah, likely right i just didnt know enough to make the leveling life simpler :P:pac:

Started mucking about in this again myself. Quite nice that I just randomly signed in and it gave me 7 days free time.
Created a new character and just grinding through. Hit 30 last night and finished the BLM quest. Gonna try keep it going this time as there is no other mmo that even remotely interests me out there right now.

I love that you can do any class on one toon and the lore is fairly deep.

Additionally there are lots of filler activities like player housing ECT .

Finished up the base storyline and quests on Monday. Very enjoyable at the end. Although for BLM, one of those last fights is nuts.
Didn't get a single chance to attack. Just spent the round dodging blue beams on the the ground while the rest of the raid did the dirty work for me :D

One thing for BLM in general - I could see a lot of people giving up on it before lvl 40. I almost did myself. But once you have Bliz III and Fire III, the class becomes really enjoyable and even moreso when you hit 50. Also the story is fantastic, if a little sad at the end.

Just about ready to move into Heavensward content now except the game has given me about 200 unlock quests for hard dungeons. Once I've cleared up the quest log I'll move into that.

Side note - I also ran into my first Hildibrand quest line... wtf was that. I honestly sat there with my mouth wide open for most of it. Frickin hilarious.

I tried again to get through the leveling, but couldn't hack it. If i could skip those side quests, it would probably be fine, but i just can't resist accepting any and all quests in games...it's bloody annoying :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,307 ✭✭✭Xenoronin

I'm usually the same, but for the most part, the MSQ and dungeons kept me occupied so I never needed the side quests. When I was stuck for a bit of experience, I just did the hunting log and finished out the Novice Trainer stuff. I dunno what quality of side quests there are. I never want to go back to levelling... It wasn't the best experience, and without an MSQ to entertain, I don't know how people do it.

I would advise leaving all side quests and just focus on the main quests, save the side quests for when you inevitably level another class. Unless of course you really enjoy doing them :pac:

But eh, story wise, i found the base game story pretty meh, Heavensward was quality though, stormblood is good too, i think most favor SB but i really digged HW..

Forgot to unsubscribe, so i guess i'll give it another go skipping the side quests :P

It is way more engaging in almost all aspects once you get to Heavensward content. Good luck!

If skipping side-quests annoys you, don't fret. Seeing as you can level all classes on one character, just think of it like 'saving them for your next class'. You're not really skipping them, just leaving them aside for when you need that XP :)

Pretty much this is what I've done. I'm 52 now and only doing the main quest line to get into Heavensward... which is taking forever due to the post main-story.. story.
Also half leveling a tank every now and then for any side quests I've missed along the way.

I had to buy the bike from FF7 from the store the fact it plays music from the chase scene when your escaping midgar is amazing lol .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

Nice i really have to start collecting mounts :), i bought a red mech thing as well that reminds me of the mechs from start of FF6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

Ok that video got me and i ended up buying Bennu also.

Was also checking out some of the fashion reddits and this caught my eye.

Just shows how cool the game can look.

One final question, any really decent questlines you guys would recommend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

There has been so much goodness from E3 I missed this , will check it out. I just love how they have done the AU world so much better than blizzard.

Finally back in a position to continue questing. I decided to change main to Bard.
I like BLM but doing the level 50 trials has made me realise how much of a stationary glass cannon they are. While it's great fun in dungeons or general solo play, doing mid-high movement fights just gets annoying as you're having to cancel so many casts. At least when you suck like me :D

Swapped out to Bard and got it to 50 now so can finally continue on. Enjoying Bard also. Style of play is a bit more reactionary for procs rather than spamming the same combo.

Finally time to move into Heavensward.

Yea even my level 50 gear has an amazing look to it. I'm enjoying the utility the class brings so definitely gonna stick with this for a bit.

    Throw up a screenshot :)

Also its great that you can give something a go and move on to another class without creating a new one.

Considering it's a level 50 bow using a years old skin, it's still pretty savage looking when until then you've only been using little wooden pieces of crap :pac:

Just finished up "The Keeper of The Lake" for the first time.
THIS is exactly why I swapped from BLM to BRD. Frickin hell. That last fight, while incredibly fun, would have been a nightmare for BLM. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,573 ✭✭✭Infini

BLM will likely get somewhat easier with the changes coming with shadowbringers next week, Healers on the other hand are really getting done in DPS wise with the gutting of the offensive actions down to 2-3 buttons expecially SCH, I hope they reverse on this as I expect a total inversion of Healers becoming hard to find instead of Tanks.

BLM really improves from 60 - 70. You gain a lot of mobility abilities (e.g. triplecast) which helps immensely. Further changes in ShB will only enhance the job.

I have every job/class/crafter/gatherer at 70, and while I could inst-queue roulettes with a tank or healer, I still prefer to wait on my BLM. Theres nothing more satisfying that seeing those 45k+ Foul critical/direct hits. I tremble at the thought of doing the same with the new lvl80 nuke 'Xenoglossy'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭ArthurG

Aetherial Manipulation is incredibly useful - I have it macro'd to always zoom me over to the tank, which is particularly useful for donut type AOEs. Similarly Between the Lines is amazing, but really you don't see that many BLMs using the skills.

The worst thing about BLMs though is when you're tanking and pull a large group (e.g. Ghymlit Dark dungeon) and they single target cast Fire IV...... BLM's AOE rotation is probably the easiest in the game but it's also the most powerful.

    RIP Bard utility buffs :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭ArthurG

I got my first job (BLM) to lvl76 over the weekend. The changes they made are incredible - the rotation is incredibly smooth now, with virtually no downtime. Love it.

Additionally, the main story quest is phenominal. It's almost like a single player FF game. For me this may be the best expansion yet.

Does seem there is a lot of dissatisfaction among healers though - having said that we've no idea what high end raiding is going to look like yet, and won't for at least a few weeks.

God damn, you're really selling the story. Gotta get myself through the first 50 or so levels i guess :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭Noxin

He's not the first I've heard saying the story is top notch. Plenty of people promoting it as top xpac to date.

Personally as of yesterday, I just finished up the Heavensward story. It was really fantastic I must say, although at times I did find myself rushing through the content as I want to get up to the latest.
Will be starting Stormblood in the next day or so. Still miles off the latest content. Even find myself skipping all of the random unlock quests for various dungeons or other items at the moment.

I've swapped from Bard to Dancer as well. Bard feels very lackluster now. I found myself with too much downtime with only one skill to hammer while waiting on procs or GCD.
Dancer on the other hand is extremely fun to play and feels quite strong. They could do with making the skills feel more impactful though. Barely any sound when you're bashing someone over the head with a chakram and only get a slight swish noise. :P

Currently playing a Lancer, and i finished the first three dungeon quests last night. Not a lot of abilities as of yet (really just 3 with a buff on my next attack, and ranged attack so far). Level 22, so i should be able to get a mount now, right?

Not sure if i'll stick with the Lancer, or try something else, but if i change class, i go back to level 1 right? Is there any speed up mechanics for 2nd/3rd etc... classes? Wouldn't mind swapping every now and again, but don't really fancy starting from scratch each time.

You go back to level 1, but you get a big boost to leveling classes after your first. I'm not sure what the percentage is for lower level classes at this point, but I'm sure it's very high.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

The amount of back and forth in early quests is ****in ridiculous. Spent the last 40 minutes going back and forth for single quests, without even having a mount to help :(

Do you not have a mount or stuck in an area with no mounts ?

I love some of the mounts in this game as I said my personal favorite is the bike from FF7.

Think i'm about to get it. Thought i had missed something, as everything i found was saying it when you join a grand company around level 20, but i'm 25 and that hasn't even happened yet. Must have been well over-levelled.

Is the Palace of the Dead a good way of trying other classes? Seems like you can level up pretty quick from what i've read.

Great update i was looking on my phone so i didnt see your original post. I am not going to lie i have been caught up in BFA as i currently raid in wow. However i am conflicted as i want to play FF14.

After a review like that i need to try find time for sure :)

How relevant is the ARR story to the later expansions? I've found myself clicking through a lot of text, as its juts not interesting at all, but i'm wondering will that hurt me once i get to the actual good stuff.

I generally like stories in my games, but these haven't been great so far (even though i liked the Ifrit quests/battle).

I hear for ARR it picks up after Titan and gets good. Then heavenly sword and story after is supposed to be really good.

As i said i am going through it for the first time like you and was having some of the same concerns but heard it picks up.

I can't stand how gated WoW has become. Everything from story to gameplay is locked behind mechanics to keep you playing constantly. The classes have also been ruined, and any fun abilities or things that made them unique have been taken away. I enjoy it for the lore, but that's about it at this stage.

In this, I'm torn between sticking with my current character, and going to a different one i started a while ago (lvl27 or lvl17, so not much difference). I generally prefer playing female characters in mmo's now, as they tend to look better in most armour, and if i'm going to be leveling multiple classes with one character, i think i'll stick with the one i prefer for the long run. Figure i'll just blitz through a few fates and levequests to get my level up to around where i was. Mainly just to get my mount, and then it won't be quite as painful.

I dropped wow some time back as well. I had been tempted for 8.2 as it does look to include some improvements... but right now I'm so addicted to FFXIV it's unhealthy :pac:

I'm almost onto the latest content, having finished ARR, HW and almost through SB now having just stepped foot in The Lochs. (and man did it take a long time to get here. Every time I thought I had finished all sidequests, two more would pop. Like bloody cockroaches)

Once I'm through this last bit I'll just have to take care of whatever post-expansion quest lines there are and I'll finally be into ShB. I'm already a level 70 dancer so will be 80 way before finishing the latest content quests for sure.

Heard nothing but good things about ShB so looking forward to seeing it for myself... and finally making enough money to maybe buy a house. Just hit the 4.5mil mark by selling all gear rewards from quests that were not my class during SB. Some fetched a hefty gil influx :D

Very nice little video. Actually gave me some yearnings for my BLM again.
Only reason I put it down was because the cast times were quite long (at least in leveling gear) and the bosses were becoming increasingly movement based. I'd spend half the battle moving out of damage areas so it's nice to see that casting looks quicker and movement a bit better.
I share your feelings on BRD. It was my main before the changes but now it just feels boring to play. Maybe it improves later but that was when I changed to Dancer. I'll definitely be getting this one to 80 before any others.
Funny enough with regards to healers - Whenever I've played one, I've always focused on...healing. Dealing damage was never in my mind. Any reading I've done on them for FFXIV says to do damage as well. It'll be an interesting change when I decide to level one for sure.

Sadly my crafting / gathering is severely lacking with gatherers each to 20 and crafters each to 10-15. It's on my "to do" list for sure as I do enjoy the way it is done, but seeing as I needed to get through all content from scratch, it was fairly down the list. Same with a lot of other things. I've left many Trails still locked such as Odin etc.. Pretty much all of the optional ones in favour of leveling and finishing the story.

Onto the post SB quests now and really enjoying them. The story so far has been better than the actual SB quests themselves :D

I have been aiming for the MCH, it's been my goal since starting lol.

Although the gunblade has me torn even though I haven't tanked much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭Noxin

Just finished the 4.x or ShB pre-quests. All I can is... wow. Did they change writers or something?
This entire line feels very different to any quest line from before and I absolutely loved it. Some of the characters were amazing.
The Tsuyu story was beautiful. I had hoped she would remain innocent minded but kinda figured she wouldn't. Felt so bad for her and Gosetsu after you learn his story

The scenes leading into ShB were so well done. I actually had goosebumps on my arms at times. That sh1te ain't happened to me in a long damn time. :pac:

What is it with Final Fantasy games eh? They can really get to you. So amazingly done. I'm currently in the middle of a FFVII play through as well. (overall intention is to play through them all again for sh1ts and giggles)
I'm almost at "that scene" and the feels are already upon me even though I've been through it plenty of times before.

Damn I love this series. First games I ever fell in love with and they just keep it going so well. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

Yah they are some games, my primary FF console if the switch, finished 7 moved on to 9 and I have 10 and 12 after that.

Also going to get FF8 remake when it comes out. All the while playing FF14 .

I had kinda moved away from FF games but 14 got me back into it them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

Haven't they needed the damage dealing of healers in shadowbringers or did I watch a bad video.

In the work to game videos they were basically saying the damage dealing abilities were simplified.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

I really like this video, I cannot tell how accurate it is but it describes how the raiding philosophy changed once they realized healers not only could but should DPS.
