WP7 will probably get ported once cottula is finished porting android (maybe not)

but cottula from xda seems to always make things happen once it comes to hacking HD2 ;)

Cotulla is busy working with linux/Android were as Da_G has been working away with the HTC Mondrian WP7 Rom for the past 4 months! ;)

There's plenty of WP7 roms out now but at the moment the HTC Mondrian is the closest to the HD2... for the moment...

yeah but i mean once hes finished ;) i know that wont be finished for a good couple of months...even after everything is working cool and smooth...it will take centuries to smooth out the bugs and crap...

though since im not planning upgrade my hd2 till the new qualcomm chips come out i can just sit and wait :) (win mo and android doing me fine now :D )

Me too! I'm very happy with my HD2 now (with Energ Rom) but I'm looking forward to seeing how good (or bad) WP7 is when its out.

so theres a good read :) if you got time click on the bog the blogger is talking about...

ive alot of developers, geeks on my twitter account and the whole lot doesnt shut up how easy it is to program and develop apps on microsofts windows phone 7 platform

300'000 developers tools were downloaded since they went online...ofc some people re download them more than once so you could take away around 100k download but even at that its a huge figure...

with microsoft developing its own games and so many developers going making apps for windows phone 7 do you think it will have what it takes to stand beside iPhone and Android marketplaces?

the other day i was reading a post that its very easy to transfer iPhone apps to windows phone 7 platform so we will probably see alot of multi platform apps from now on both available on the iPhone and on the WP7....

    have a read here :)

Maybe its just me but all these new phones are bleedin clones of each other...iphone/htc desire/samsung galaxy, they all look the same apart from a quirky cover...I want something quirky!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭evolutionqy7

Desire doesn't look anything like the iPhone or Galaxy. Though this have been discussed of Galaxy looking alot like the iPhone though even the shortcut name SGS reminds ya of the 3GS :) galaxy owners deny that ;)

though phones are looking more a like since their all surrounded by the touchscreen. same candy bar shape. Some new HTC phones in the first page there are alot diff :) quite cool designs :)

Microsoft to officially kick off Windows Phone 7 on October 11th, devices launch shortly after
There's been a lot of rumors about this lately, most of which we disregarded on grounds of speculation. But now it's been made official: Microsoft will be kicking-off Windows Phone 7 on October 11th, This isn't a "launch" as many have called it, but rather an open-house, most likely full of phone demonstrations and disclosure of carrier release dates. It's a month away, but we've waited 4 years...what's another 32 days?

Engadget have a two videos of HTC's customization of 7. Have to say, i think it looks brutal, it's completely at odds with aesthetic of the platform and is classic case of form over function e.g. some of the transitions were up to two seconds owing to the completely OTT animations.

some good news in one way :) hope this will be carried out sooner rather than latter

Since WP7 can only support GSM (not a problem for us) but it will probably have a rewrite for CDMA too in WP7.

Along the good updates it was said that ms is already looking into to updating their software to support third party app muliti tasking and once the new core is finished it will be able to support flash 10.1

this kind of explains why flash and multi tasking hasn't been brought from the start. but at least their admitting it that their looking into it and will be available to customers who will buy the phone in the upcoming months :)

    so not too shabby :)

A lot of old chipsets in these phones including the HD7.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 85 ✭✭Bugzy

yeah well you cant really expect alot for a new OS to have top specs. when android came out first it wasnt top of the line.

i also think next windows phones batch wont come out till ms rewrites the os for better arm processor support as well as flash support.

anyway Windows Phone 7 is official today :) will be looking at the launch videos tonight :D

i always enjoy CEO speeches :)

WP7 looks fugly, has no dev community bar the 5 dev houses they paid millions to for the games for launch, the hardware on the launch phones is industry standard not groundbreaking. The only people I can see being enthused about it are the xbox gamescore kiddies who represent 0.0001% of the smartphone market.

RIP WP7, it was funny laughing at the funeral you held for iOS.....I note you didn't have the cheek to add android to the procession, as you know not even the dumbest fanbois could have swallowed that.

I'd like to get my mitts on a WP7 to have a mess with, but WinMo 6.x has been a POS for eons, and WP7 is about 3 years late to market.

How can you fault them on the hardware. They're equal to pretty much every high end phone on the market (except maybe the still camera and storage space). As for developer support, android had no developer support at one stage and look at it now. I'm still not too sure on the ui either. WP7 has an up hill battle ahead of it but with the weight of microsoft behind it, it has potential to take off.

I am stating what differentiators it brings to market:

    Hardware - None
    OS - Immature and Fugly
Appstore - None to speak of bar the apps dev houses were paid millions to make

My long term prediction for WP7 is slightly less epic fail then WinMo 6.5, Gartner say the same. You can't bring an inferior OS to market with no appstore and no dev community, a year or two behind the curve.

Android got away with it because Apple foolishly locked themselves into AT&T which has an inferior network, and was an untenable smartphone OS choice for vast swathes of the US as a result, this allowed android to grow and flourish in the US despite being vastly inferior to iphone for its first 18mths or more, WP7 doesn't have the same luck, it's caught between the iOS truck and the now mature Android freight train, and its 2 years late to market.

Actually I've already built an app for it, ready to go once the marketplace launches to public developers.

You're very quick to forget that the first year of iPhone didn't have any marketplace at all, and it did just fine.

Indeed but you are forgetting apple invented the appstore back then, yes symbian and winmo had Apps you could buy or pike all over the shop, but apple invented the centralised Appstore concept, WP7 is 3 years behind Appstore and getting on for 2 years behind Android Market. They are launching phones with comparable hardware, coupled with an immature OS that has laughable omissions like no cut and paste for example, into a world dominated by mature established OS's like Android and iOS, personally I don't see a bright future for WP7, and neither do Gartner.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 8,061 Mod ✭✭✭✭liamog

I'm looking forward to the new phones, the OS looks interesting. Tue app situation doesn't worry me too much, iPhone and Android both started with no apps. If we wanted every app to be available from day one it sure would make the phone boring.

My question is will Three be getting the Omni 7, I'm currently using a HD2 running Android, the HD7 really doesn't seem to be an upgrade and I definitely want to leave o2 based on their network

Also iOS / iPhone was arguably revolutionary at launch, I hate Jobs as much as the next man, but even I will grudgingly give him that. WP7 is not revolutionary at launch, it stacks up poorly versus the competition, which again is another major thing going against it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,508 ✭✭✭Oafley Jones

It's insane to write this off. I wouldn't be surprised if this surpasses ios in two to three years. MS can buy success for this.

well not too fond of the UI...not enough customization on stock there :( though browser was meant to be great on an engadget review...time will tell though

MS developed great developers tools that also allow app porting from iPhone to WP7 and vice versa. I really dont think there will be a problem. Especially that most developers said they never had so much fun developing apps for WP7

I think MS is being criticized way to hard on their OS...

iOS didn't have copy paste in the start and it had its flaws just the same way android had its till Google bought it.
You cant expect a new OS to just jump in there. developing something that can stand up to the existing platforms takes times. and so far i think ms did good android didn't just jump and overtake iOS it took quite a few years.

Windows Phone 7 platform is an upgradable OS so future updates are coming as well as was discussed that better support for arm processors as i said before is being written in the future as additional features as flash were being talked about being added.

just speaking of copy paste just read on this :P

iOS was revolutionary at launch, and despite being immature and lacking key features its stacked up brilliantly against the opposition, given Symbian and WinMo 6.x were terrible for capacitive touch screen phones.

iOS could still succeed without alot of key features as it was soo much better than what existed at the time.

Android was given a lifeline by Apple being tied to AT&T, it meant huge swathes of America couldn't/wouldn't get an iPhone and left a huge market for a nascent Android to step into, one that it gratefully exploited. This again allowed it to succeed despite alot of flaws as it wasn't competing with iOS, the benchmark of the time.

WP7 is launched in direct competition to 2 outstanding mobile platforms - iOS and Android, one of which is opensource and free to use. It's hard to see how an inferior OS for which MS charges a license fee for use is going to succeed in such a cutthroat market.

And when you have major manufacturers like Samsung saying things like this:

“We are Prioritizing our Android platform. Android is very open and flexible, and there is a consumer demand for it,” YH Lee, head of marketing at Samsung Mobile, told Reuters in an interview on sidelines of the IFA consumer electronics fair.

I think its only fair to predict WP7 has one hell of an uphill battle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭evolutionqy7

and an uphill batter it will be.

but the only reason the iOS ever succeeded was cause of the right marketing...and **** it it was the right time they came in cause there wasnt really alot of competition there.

Android isnt free...im sure if you snipped around you would find that out :)

and no it wasnt the fact that the iPhone was tied down to one network. It was the fact that verizon advertised the crap out of it with their droid line up.

anyway i played around with android on my hd2 a few weeks later i just stopped booting it up cause it got boring to me and doesnt provide such easy access to modify and customize your UI like on 6.5.x

How have you come up with this? By all accounts at the launch event, its a very slick OS.

Just look at all the big companies who are behind Windows Phone 7 and have models all ready for sale.
Why did they bother if they have to pay a license fee for each phone.

Also Samsung are going to release 7 new Windows Phone 7 models before the end of the year, how many new Android phones will they be releasing before the end of the year? So much for prioritizing Android.

    http://www.mobiledia.com/news/74781.html

If one company could pull this off it would be Microsoft. We'll just have to wait and see...

Samsung etc. will have signed a license, but MS will effectively be paying the OEMs to utilize the platform. It's a analogy that not entirely correct; but consider when Dell started offering Ubuntu 2 or 3 years ago, the overall costs were greater for Dell than "paying" MS for Windows. So a free platform isn't always a cheaper alternative.

My gut feeling on this, is that this was a negotiating tactic from Samsung to extract more favourable terms from MS.
