Some unbelievable prices there for incalf cows and cows with calves at foot. Have to wonder how anyone can justify giving 3000 for them

The 270kg CH for €1090 must have been a good one.

Golden Ch, you know the type! There was almost fisticuffs over those ones.

SI/CH crosses were also a great trade, the half golden ones with white heads.

Overall what would be your opinion on the trade.

No point feeding meal if the lighter ones are averaging better, think trade was mighty especially if you had light ones with a bit of quality to them. Heavy stock wasn't great, didn't seem to be buyers there for them.

Last year we had better quality stock over 400kg at the same sale- got about the same prices and had a lot more meal eaten. So trade is definitely higher than this time last year.

Why are the light lads making so much this year?

Cos prices are back so much. Any 11mt old over 400 kg will be ready to finish in the next 12mts and lads are really unsure on next year. Still nuts paying 900squid on a 250-300kg animal.

Was there late on, 200kg nice shape making €700.
The thing about these is farmers are buying them, if fed for the winter & sold in spring they'll leave a few quid & both producer & feeder get a cut, plus next can get a cut too.
Only issue is number of owners

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭MIKEKC

how do you know they will a few quid next year

Weanling said are not the dearest to winter& If managed they should be 300kg + in spring, which will be ideal for grass & can fetch from €850-€1000

    Sell both & sell soon.
From my few outingsm, that is the ideal weight to sell. Generally anything heavier & the final price isn't much greater, so technically you're giving away Kg.
If they're nice sort you should have no problem averaging €1000

Thanks.....For the Beef Data Scheme do Marts have anything up on the board referring to how many Stars a weanling or her Mother has?

Should be helping selling them if Mammy is a 5 Star.

Nothing up in the few marts I've been in since the scheme began. There are special sales of 4/5 star heifers though. Plus it could be announced by the auctioneer but you'd nearly want the print out for the animal to prove it.
I'd agree with Farrell as well, sell soon, those hairy golds were being bought by both exporters and farmers which is why they're so dear. If they're quality, there won't be much difference between the bull and heifer prices.

It's coming but a while away, icbf are pushing this, but will only show for Members.
Personally I'd prefer if they show all animals being sold & charge non members a nominal fee.
Up this way there's special sales in Carrigallen & Ballyduff, but think these could become more frequent
