I thought they were going to completely restart the womens GS today, seems it's just run 2 they are doing now. On Eurosport and the eurovision links no doubt.

I really don't know how the Canadian women didn't score more than two there, and I know peole are going to say there were similar shot totals but the Americans were just hitting with hope a lot of the time in the last period!

The Canadian women's hockey team is getting in some "trouble" for their post-game celebrations from the IOC. It seems celebrating a gold medal victory in an empty arena with (non-Olympic sponsor donated) champagne, beer and cigars isn't befitting of an Olympic athlete.

So while this is cool (in fact, this is the coolest Olympic moment ever)
    untitled-1.jpg?t=1267204245

    This requires an investigation

And perhaps most reprehensible of all, the girl on the left, Marie-Philip Polin, who scored both Canada's goals, is only 18 and thus not old enough to drink in BC. (Won't somebody think of the children?!)

^ The really silly thing there is that Marie-Philip Poulin is actually legally old enough to drink in her home province of Québec!

Seriously though, the girl scored the two goals to win a gold medal in the Olympics, who the hell is petty enough to kick up a fuss about having a drink in an empty ice hockey stadium...

Also, this man just gave the best excuse of the games. "I ****ed up because I watched too much porn over the last 2 weeks" :)

She can also drink in Calgary, where she was living for the 8 months in the leadup to the Olympics. The other provinces in Canada are full of prudes.

I wouldn't put it past the IOC, but they probably saw the "underage girl" and made a statement about it to protect their own asses. Most media outlets are just covering the fact something like this is even a story, but regardless of what happens, the team just got a whole lot more popular because of this.

Was skiing in Fernie, which is just in BC, last year and thought it was 18 for drinking there but 21 in whatever state Calgary was in a couple of miles east of where we were.

Canada threw away two easy shots of getting the gold in the Womens curling there. That "sport" really shouldn't be quite as exciting as that.

The Canadian skip ****ed up bigtime. She messed up matchwinning shots in the 10th and 11th ends and pretty much handed Sweden the win. Pity, because she'd been playing great until then...

4 man bob sleigh really is the business, so exciting. Those dudes are absolute monsters, built like tanks the lot of them. Cant wait for the last two runs.
So its Canada vs USA in the hockey final. Who do you think will come out on top this time? Should be a classic.
Cant believe its almost over though:(

Canada will win, no doubt! As much as I'd love an American win, Canada will not allow the Americans to beat them twice on home soil. Hopefully, it will be a good game.

I have been watching some of the action on the BBC HD satellite channel on a 50" plasma. The picture quality, when it isn't snowing, is fabulous and makes it such a joy to watch.

    Thank you BBC.

that poor Russian, though he's taking it brilliantly.

He did take it very well, although the replay of him falling over the gate was very funny.

Well done to Shane O Connor 46th out of 108 Starters in the Olympic Slalom.

A great result for a home grown Skier

    Correction 45th one was Disqualified

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,639 ✭✭✭PeakOutput

did anyone see the race for i think it was 5th/6th one racer pulled out as it was pointless and they made the other guy start if he wanted an official place instead of a dns classiffication

he just went threw the gate held onto the wall and took off his board funny stuff

felt bad for the russian pretty unfair but seriously good run from anderson to take it even with the no sound start

In the womens snowboard cross, I think it was, there was someone that was injured and just left the gate for the small final and then walked off before the first jump. It was just because of the places counting for world cup points that made it worth ensuring the lower places, not sure if they counted for the PGS so that could be why they didn't even bother turning up at the gate to start.

Going to be fantastic and brutal, real sport played by hard men.
Dont miss it, you've been warned :D

Although I know less than nothing about Ice Hockey, something feels wrong about watching a 1500m runner, a downhill skier and a rower chat about it.

Very true, you would think The BBC could have found someone who has played a bit of Ice Hockey to drop in.

Almost as odd as having Paula Radcliffe share her thoughts on Curling with us a few nights ago.

Well done Canada. It's their national sport and I'd say if they were only to get one gold in the whole Olympics, this would be the one they'd have wanted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,172 ✭✭✭✭kmart6

What a finish to the games!!!!

I don't think the final could have been scripted any better than the game going to overtime in the last 30 seconds, and then the poster boy of Canadian Ice Hockey steps up for the first time in three games....wow!

Great games, really got into it, shame its only kind of every 4 years its possible to follow all different disciplines in one place!

Congrats to all involved, and thanks for the memories!

Exciting end to the Ice Hockey. Well done Canada, I thought the States were going to take it after equalising in the dying seconds of the 3rd quarter. Liked the Eurosport commentators, really knew there stuff, even gave a shout out to a few Irish viewers who emailed them.

It looks like Canadas own the podium came true though, 14 golds and 26 in total. The States won the most with 37 (9-15-13) followed by Germany with 30 (10-13-7) and the Canadians 3rd with 14-7-5.

On the whole really enjoyed the Games, highlights for me were the Cross Country, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Luge and Alpine events. Who was the athlete of the games?

Bjoergen with her 3 golds in Cross Country? Neuner in the Biathlon, Amman with his two golds in the Ski Jumping. Tonnes of great performances. Maybe Madic in the cross country, medaling with broken ribs or the Canadian skater medaling 3 days after her mothers death?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

^ Madjic from the cross country gets my vote.

Although special mention for the Canadian skater, and the Georgians for just turning up at the opening.

Shaun White was probably the Star of the Games for me.

He took his Sport to new levels, truely an epic performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Meng Wang needs to get a mention there... won everything except the 1,500m in short-track speed skating. Also Peter Northug in cross-country skiing, and that's partly due to the fact that he's absolutely nuts.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

A degree of nuttiness is needed for pretty much all sports in the winter games. You don't need to have the same number of loose screws to do most sports in the summer games.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭opinion guy

PErhaps Bode Miller deserves mention ?

does anyone know how/when they will decide if ski cross will be kept?

and does anyone think if it is that it is something countries like us could get decent at? as far as the ski events go i think its structure could definitely allow a country like ours to compete

I think they would be mad not to keep it!!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

The skicross was a full event this year so my understanding is that it will be kept by default. Before becoming a full event though it would have been a demo last time round which is where they get to decide if they keep it or not. The short track was a demo event in Calgary which that commentator Willf O'reilly one one of the events but didn't get an official medal, but then has been a full medal event since then for instance.

Curling and Skeleton have only been back in the games for a few years, but they may not have been demo events before rejoining as they had been in the Olympics before, all of the board events are relatively new as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,639 ✭✭✭PeakOutput

ok so if its a demo there are no medals handed out? cause i could have sworn they said these were the first gold medals for ski cross

and ye i think they would be mad to not keep it

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

I think it was demoed at the last games.

Edit: Seems that they didn't feel the need to demo the ski cross before making it a full medal event, they usually do though:

Northug is some class of an animal, that sprint he put in at the end of the 50k yesterday was super-human. I'd also nominate Martina Sablikova for taking two golds and a bronze in the speed skating.

Whatever happened to the 'Moguls' event. It was a ski or board event where the athelete negotiated a large number of small bumps down a hill. It may have been one of the first board event in an Olympics. (Maybe Calgary).

Nah, the curling was great. You do have to work to understand their tactics, but whilst they might not be throwing themselves down a mountain at high speed I found it great to watch. Rhona Martin explaining what was going on helped.
