And don't forget all the people that don't pay, your supporting them also. And the probably are paying for Sky, Netflix, Amazon etc.

One of the arguments RTE defenders try to use is the "Public Goods" defence, that there is no barrier to stop you consuming their services and it does not cost extra to add another consumer, therefore they make the TV tax mandatory to deal with the "free rider" problem. The "Public goods" was certainly true prior to the 1990s, however technology has moved on and expressly for internet connections which require RTE resources ( TCP sockets, memory allocation and bandwidth) this argument does not hold.
    Public good definition

In every economy, some goods are provided by the government to the entire people. Such goods are called public good. Specifically, public good is the one that is provided to the society as a whole and consumption by one individual doesn't reduces its availability or doesn't exclude others from consuming it.

RTE are being grossly negligent especially in light of their deficits by not enforcing a subscription model for their internet services which are by definition NOT a public good and since SKY, Netflix and Amazon are subscription based services there is no technical reason they cannot do this and eliminate the so called "free rider" problem instead of taxing people who do not use their services.

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.

Nobody would suscribe for the RT internet service. While it's sports information section is good it sport and new feed us not great. Nobody uses the player unless what you want to watch is unavailable elsewhere. It's adds on the player are annoying and stop unles you keep the webpage open

Then they obviously have content that you find valuable and would subscribe. Additionally RTEs internet service is unfair competition for local media companies and their employees who don't have a tax subsidy underwriting their losses.

What a deluded windbag. That statement gives you a window into the rte mindset - variety, content, quality doesnt matter, we have been swindling money for years and very happy with how things are, so pipe down, pay up and listen to how mr x lost a child or rte staffer y had a baby.

He said the same thing last year (August 18 2018).

"You can watch Netflix all you like but you cannot download soul and that's what we have. We are Irish and we are proud of it. And you can't get it anywhere else. You can't find it online, you can't download it, it's not a box set, it's not something like that. That's what makes us unique. Buy Irish."

Open your eyes would you. The whole world has been climate change mad for about 15 years now. And its really ramped up the last 5.

Yet you think its only in Ireland and its FGs fault.
Never said that at all, pathetic strawman nonsense. You green hippies are insufferable.

He really is that deluded that he doesn't realize he is f**king useless

Apart from the fact 99% of the "guests" are people they found down the canteen in RTE.....

It is f**king dreadful, the one time he had someone decent and relevant, Peter Casey, he tried to do a controversial interview and made a balls of it because his other "guests" made a show of themselves.....

Yes, you can download soul. Very easily. As folks do, constantly. The 'soul' is in the making of it-when it feels genuine, genuinely made, lovingly made... from the heart... it has soul.
Tune into TLLS and you'd be lucky to see anyone who gives a crap on that show. Genuinely. It's devoid of energy.

When Pat Kenny lost interest in the Late Late Show, when he genuinely started to lose interest in it... he bowed out. Tubridy is 3past that point.

Tubridy had on Sean Spicer-a figure who was widely loathed before he came on the show. By the time Tubridy was done, we LOVED Sean Spicer... dude came across a bit of fun, even if his former boss was a jerk.

Meanwhile, the Liam Neeson interview... made people HATE Liam Neseson... Neeson is not a fan of speaking on the fly. Without lines, he feels lost.
And sure enough, discussion of #MeToo made Neeson the villain...
Because Tubridy. And Neeson's statements went global.

Does RTE still have links to big tobacco? The US, a country of 325 million people has 193 cases of lung illness from e-cigs. Meanwhile in Ireland 6000 people die a year from tobacco related illnesses from a population of 4 million odd.
The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has said it had identified 193 potential cases of severe lung illness linked to vaping in 22 states, including one adult in Illinois who died after being hospitalized.

To not quote Atlantic, some people using e cigs have lung issues while ignoring all other external factors that already existed
Suppose it is a bit like rte, ignore the root problem s and blame it on some incidental issue that has nothing to do with the primary cause

Just to add these are all involving young people, how vaping gives you diarrhoea is beyond me, me thinks there is something else involved

I know at least 10 people who went from complete tobacco dependancy to e-cigs, most were at death's door for simple things like air to live but after e'cigs I'd say a 80% plus improvement in quality of life.

The problem with tv license is the majority pay, like myself, so the few can be singled out and dragged to court

The only way to make change is mass refusal to pay the license but then everyone is spread across.a year

If the license was due 1st April and everyone pays then everyone just stops and they change

Instead I’m in Feb, loads of people in every other month

Francis "The Viper" Higgins youtube channel is very funny and he's the one Irish comedian that does deserve the RTE platform but of course they wont give him his own show because his humour isnt in your face enough for the auld biddies out in the country to understand

The whole country was watching it and it was discussed at a World level, people in Australia where ringing me and telling me about it. My cousins in America where all watching it

RTE? nope.....it was about 12 - 15 months after the hype and RTE decided they might do something about it and bring them in

RTE who is supposed to give the people what they want and promote yougn talent.....the problem with Hardy Bucks was none of the guys had Daddy or Mammy who worked in RTE so they got ignored till the pressure was too much, even then RTE has donef**k all with it.....

Doireann Garrihy has been confirmed as the co-presenter of a new 2fm breakfast show, alongside the station’s current drivetime presenter Eoghan McDermott.

It is hoped that Garrihy (26), who has a strong social media following, will bring in more of the younger listeners that 2fm has been trying to reach.

She has 28k followers on twitter.....FFS 28k followers is now a strong social media following :-)

I know she is....hence why she got the job.....

But saying she got it because of her social media following and she has 0.0007% of the population if you put the population at 4 million, is really pushing it......

So how exactly is that gobs**t going to pull in young listeners via social media?

I accidentally caught some of this yesterday. Eoghan having a go at her for not knowing what bona fides means. His idea of what it means was wrong, and then he Googles the pronunciation and it turns out he has that wrong too.

So it's not young listeners they are trying to target

    It's idiots :P

Unfortuneatly the days of 1 radio station outside Dublin are long gone and with podcast/spotify why would anyone listen to them clowns.....

Do RTE announce listening figures? I know BBC Radio in UK would announce each month if show was up or down in ratings

They're is no soul whatsoever in the late late. It's like a couple staying together 'for the kids', barely going through the motions, failing to notice the kids are completely aware their parents don't even have the passion left to hate each other.

Sometimes I wonder if Tubriby found a page from an old magazine with a short article on what was 'cool'. He's always coming out with the old clichés. There's no soul in 'liking' stuff because you think you should.

In fairness now didn't they win an RTÉ competition to be broadcast on the RTÉ player, and then eventually it progressed to TV?
Hardy Bucks was created in 2007 when Chris Tordoff (Viper Higgins) filmed Martin Maloney (Eddie Durkin) and Owen Colgan (Buzz McDonnell) for a college project. After sitting on the footage for a year, Tordoff uploaded the shorts to YouTube. The show's popularity eventually got it commissioned by RTE who took editorial control of the show.

Hardy Bucks was entered into the RTÉ Storyland competition and from a total of 122 applications, nine projects were commissioned to make one episode each. These episodes were released in March 2009. With all nine projects on the website, the public could vote for their favourite and at the end of every month the shows with the fewest votes would be voted off, leaving the remaining teams to make the next episode with the same €8,000 budget per episode. Hardy Bucks made it all the way to the finals (final two teams) and ultimately won the competition with the largest number of votes.

Did McDermott mention his sister again? And that she writes for The Irish Times? And that she’s a contributor on The Last Word?

Yeah but they were brought in and there was a lot of fixing and many of the others in the competition were unhappy with how it progresses, also in the last 10 years no other winner has been given a series. In other words storyland had little to do with their success.

RTÉ have 2 pilot schemes Storyland with Screen NÍ and a set of comedies with screen Ireland, 2 of those comedies were produced in 2018 when do they expect it to make it to series?

How do they calculate this? Ask 100 people and hope it is representative? I've never contributed to such a survey and anyone that I've asked about it (or the TV equivalent) never have either.
I can't remember the last time I listened to the radio. The only one I have is in the car and the antenna broke off at a car wash years ago. I would have expected most people aren't bothered unless in a captive location like a car or waiting room.
