Thursday, 7 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures fairly close to average although perhaps a degree or two below normal ... further rainfalls less than half of average amounts, and mostly confined to south and central counties. Partly cloudy to overcast and sometimes windy. A distant low in south Biscay (near n.w. Spain) will interact with also distant high pressure over the Baltic region, so the flow will alternate from dry to moist, coming mostly from the southeast until middle of next week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY any further showers will be brief and could be rain or hail but most places except the southwest will remain dry, as winds turn southeasterly at 50 to 70 km/hr, temperatures steady in a range of 7 to 9 C for most locations, could reach 10 or 11 inland south to around Galway and Clare. Feeling chilly in the wind near east coast, sheltered spots well inland could feel warmer if the sun stays out, but there will be intervals of passing cloud too.

TONIGHT clear intervals, a gradual increase in cloud likely, lows around 3 to 6 C.

FRIDAY breezy to windy and some scattered outbreaks of light rain or drizzle, lows 1 to 4 C and highs near 5 to 8 C. Winds east-southeast 40 to 70 km/hr. Some sun but long cloudy intervals.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY outbreaks of rain more persistent in southern counties, drizzly central counties and staying relatively dry in north, with strong southeast to east winds, becoming east to northeast by Sunday, 50 to 70 km/hr, lows near 2 C and highs 7 to 10 C.

By MONDAY a weak ridge of high pressure will bring partial clearing and temperatures near 10 C but one or two showers will pop up near weak frontal boundaries. TUESDAY will be similar but with an interval of rain later in the day, highs near 12 C. Rain is expected to move away later WEDNESDAY, with temperatures still around 11 C. A brief dry spell around THURSDAY 14th will likely be followed by milder weather and occasional rain as a southerly flow intensifies slowly.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny and cool as the morning low was -10 C but it eventually warmed up to near -1 C by early afternoon; it is now back down around -8 C under clear skies. This is the coldest part of a rather mild winter, since a brief severe cold spell in mid-January.

Partly cloudy to overcast and sometimes windy. A distant low in south Biscay (near n.w. FORECASTS

TODAY breezy to windy and some scattered outbreaks of light rain or drizzle in the south, highs 6 to 9 C. Winds east-southeast 40 to 70 km/hr. Some sun at least in parts of north and west, but long cloudy intervals.

TONIGHT continued breezy and rather raw feeling due to the east winds, drizzle or light rain in parts of the south, lows near 5 C.

SATURDAY cloudy with a few brighter intervals, showers or outbreaks of rain, winds east to northeast 50 to 70 km/hr, highs 8 to 11 C.

SUNDAY outbreaks of rain more persistent in southern counties, drizzly central counties and staying relatively dry in north, with winds becoming northeast and less gusty, around 20 to 40 km/hr, lows near 4 C and highs 7 to 10 C.

By MONDAY a weak ridge of high pressure will bring partial clearing and temperatures near 10 C but one or two showers will pop up near weak frontal boundaries. TUESDAY will be similar but with an interval of rain during the day, highs near 12 C. Rain is expected to move away later WEDNESDAY, with temperatures still around 11 C. A brief dry spell around THURSDAY 14th will likely be followed by milder weather and occasional rain as a southerly flow intensifies slowly. A southwest flow will continue into following weekend (16th-17th) with a few showers and near average temperatures expected.

My local weather on Thursday was sunny and a bit milder after another cold morning low of -10 C as it eventually warmed up to near 3 C by early afternoon; it is now back down around -7 C under clear skies.

Saturday, 9 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures fairly close to average although perhaps a degree or two below normal ... rainfalls about 75% of average amounts, gradually spreading into east and north later in the week. Partly cloudy to overcast and sometimes windy. The flow will alternate from dry to moist, coming mostly from the southeast until Tuesday when a southwest flow will return.

    FORECASTS

TODAY cloudy with a few brighter intervals, showers or outbreaks of rain in parts of south, winds east to northeast 50 to 70 km/hr, highs 7 to 11 C, higher values in western counties.

TONIGHT low cloud, fog and drizzle, winds east to northeast 40 to 60 km/hr, lows 4 to 6 C.

New moon occurs on Sunday and this combined with predicted east winds will cause high tides on east coast of Ireland to run above their usual levels. Some minor coastal flooding is predicted (around times of high tides).

SUNDAY outbreaks of rain more persistent in southern counties, drizzly central counties and staying relatively dry in north, with winds becoming northeast and less gusty, around 20 to 40 km/hr, and highs 7 to 10 C.

MONDAY variable cloud, a few showers, lows near 3 C and highs near 10 C.

TUESDAY cloudy with occasional rain, lows near 5 C and highs near 12 C.

WEDNESDAY rain tapering off to showers, partial clearing later, with temperatures steady around 11 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY partly cloudy to overcast, milder, lows near 7 C and highs 12 to 14 C.

A southwest flow will continue into following weekend (16th-17th) with a few showers and near average temperatures (11 to 13 C) expected. Some guidance shows a cold front arriving late Saturday and cooler temperatures by 17th but this is not accepted by all guidance. Longer term, would expect relatively cool and settled spells associated with high pressure, temperatures generally around 8 to 10 C.

My local weather on Friday turned overcast and milder with highs near 4 C. On the east coast of the U.S., a cold rain (at 4-6 C) later today into Sunday could turn to wet snow inland over parts of New England, but in general, a snow-deficient winter continues with recent temperature trends well above normal.

Sunday, 10 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures fairly close to average and gradually turning a bit warmer into a range of 1 to 2 deg above normal ... rainfalls about 75% of average amounts, gradually spreading into east and north later in the week. Partly cloudy to overcast most of the time. By Tuesday a southwest flow will return.

    FORECASTS

TODAY outbreaks of rain more persistent in southern counties, occasional drizzly light rain in central and northern counties, with winds becoming northeast and less gusty than in recent days, at around 20 to 40 km/hr, and highs 7 to 10 C (higher west). There could be brief intervals of brighter skies too.

TONIGHT variable cloud, a few showers, lows near 3 C.

MONDAY variable cloud, a few showers, lows near 3 C and highs near 10 C. Rain by evening.

Longer term recent indications now suggest a warmer outcome, but guidance seems to be low-confidence and changing from run to run.

My local weather on Saturday was cloudy with a high near 4 C, light snow began around late afternoon.

    FORECASTS

TODAY variable cloud, a few showers, but dry intervals to afternoon, with highs near 10 C. Rain by late afternoon, evening.

TONIGHT rain will be heavy at times, in southwest winds 40 to 60 km/hr, 15-25 mm possible, lows near 7 C.

TUESDAY cloudy with occasional rain, and highs near 12 C.

WEDNESDAY rain tapering off to showers, partial clearing later, with lows near 7 C and highs around 13 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY partly cloudy to overcast, milder, showers, lows near 7 C and highs 12 to 14 C. Turning a bit cooler late Friday.

A southwest flow will continue (or return) into following weekend (16th-17th) with showers and near or just above average temperatures (12 to 14 C) expected for the weekend including St Patrick's Day (Sunday). Longer term indications now suggest it will return to warmer temperatures for about three or four days (possibly reaching 14-17 C) before cooler weather patterns develop again.

My local weather on Sunday was cloudy with wet snow (a light coating partially thawed already), and a high near 2 C.

    FORECASTS

TODAY cloudy and misty, with occasional rain, and highs near 12 C. There may be a few brighter intervals too.

TONIGHT foggy, occasional light rain, lows 6 to 8 C.

WEDNESDAY rain tapering off to showers, partial clearing later, with highs around 11 to 13 C.

THURSDAY partly cloudy to overcast, milder, showers, lows near 7 C and highs 12 to 15 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy to overcast, showers, lows near 7 C and highs 12 to 15 C.

SATURDAY intervals of light rain, lows near 9 C and highs near 14 C.

SUNDAY partly cloudy, lows near 7 C, highs near 13 C. Rain by late afternoon or evening spreading in from west.

Staying quite mild for time of year into following week, frequent showers likely.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with brief showers of sleet or wet snow, and highs near 4 C. We are expecting a drying trend later in the week and higher temperatures by weekend.

Wednesday, 13 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will gradually turn warmer into a range of 1 to 3 deg above normal ... rainfalls about 75% to 150% of average amounts, gradually spreading into east and north later in the week, heavier at times in south coast counties. Partly cloudy to overcast most of the time.

    FORECASTS

TODAY rain tapering off to showers, partial clearing from northwest later, with highs around 11 to 13 C.

TONIGHT foggy, occasional rain, heavy at times in south coast counties (20-40 mm potential in west Cork, s Kerry); rain spreading north but not as heavy elsewhere, 10-20 mm potential, lows 7 to 11 C. Note ongoing high tides could exacerbate flood potential along south coast by preventing effective drainage of rivers nearing discharge into sea.

THURSDAY partly cloudy to overcast, milder, a few further pulses of rain tapering to showers as fronts drift north, highs 12 to 15 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy to overcast, showers, lows near 7 C and highs 12 to 15 C. Slightly cooler in north later in the day as a weak front drifts south and dies out over central Ireland, returning north as a warm front by early Saturday.

SATURDAY intervals of generally light to moderate rain, lows 6 to 9 C and highs 12 to 14 C.

SUNDAY partly cloudy, lows near 7 C, highs 12 to 14 C. Rain by late afternoon or evening spreading in from west.

Staying quite mild for time of year into following week, frequent showers likely at first, could see a drier trend and quite warm temperatures (15-18 C possible) later next week, but always with potential for strong winds to develop near west coast.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast with showers of sleet or wet snow, and highs near 3 C. We are expecting a drying trend later in the week and higher temperatures by weekend, in fact near record warmth in parts of BC and the western U.S.; another region seeing record highs is the Sahel in west Africa, with all-time records set recently near 45 C (in regions just south of Sahara desert but north of equatorial rain forest). Apparently there have also been records set in South Africa, but not in the equatorial zone where it's cloudier at this point. So e of this African heat is likely to drift northwest into parts of southern Europe although it won't be scorching hot, just into the 20s. Western China on the other hand has seen record cold weather in recent weeks, with a reading of -52 C in one location.

Thursday, 14 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 1 to 3 deg above normal ... further rainfalls about 75% to 100% of average amounts, with brief dry intervals. Partly cloudy to overcast most of the time.

    FORECASTS

TODAY partly cloudy to overcast, mild, a few further pulses of rain heaviest in western counties by later morning, but generally the rain will taper off to showers as fronts continue a slow drift northward, highs 12 to 15 C.

TONIGHT occasional light rain, fog or mist, mild, lows near 7 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy to overcast, showers, followed by clearing skies appearing earliest in north and west, and highs 11 to 14 C. Slightly cooler in north later in the day as a weak front drifts south and dies out over central Ireland, returning north as a warm front by early Saturday. Clear skies for part of Friday night will allow a slight frost in parts of Leinster and Ulster but cloud will prevent this in Munster and Connacht, and frost could break before sunrise due to encroaching cloud.

SATURDAY intervals of generally light to moderate rain from shortly after sunrise to late afternoon, lows -1 to 4 C east and north, 4 to 7 C south and west, and highs 12 to 14 C.

SUNDAY partly cloudy, lows near 7 C, highs 12 to 15 C. Rain by late afternoon or evening spreading in from west.

MONDAY rain or showers, becoming windy by late in day (southwest 60-90 km/hr), lows near 10 C and highs near 13 C.

TUESDAY showers ending, clearing, breezy and somewhat cooler, lows near 6 C and highs near 10 C.

Becoming quite mild again later into following week, and south, east could see a drier trend and quite warm temperatures (15-18 C possible) later next week, but always with potential for strong winds to develop near west coast spreading to other regions.

My local weather on Wednesday was partly cloudy and the sun felt quite warm; local snow cover is gradually receding into wooded areas but is still over 30 cm in alpine areas outside town, while the Columbia and Okanagan valleys are now snow free (again) so highs will be 13-17 C there for next several days, and 8-12 C up at our elevation. It has also turned warm in the eastern and central U.S. (20-25 C widespread). That will last a few days and then it looks a lot colder after this weekend.

Friday, 15 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 1 to 3 deg above normal ... further rainfalls about 75% to 100% of average amounts, with brief dry intervals. Partly cloudy to overcast most of the time.

    FORECASTS

FRIDAY partly cloudy to overcast, a few showers and patchy drizzle clearing east, followed by clearing skies appearing earliest in north and west, and highs 10 to 13 C. Slightly cooler in north later in the day as a weak front drifts south and dies out over central Ireland.

TONIGHT clear skies for part of the night will allow a slight frost in parts of Leinster and Ulster, and briefly further west in Connacht, but cloud will prevent this in parts of Munster and Connacht, and any frost could dissipate before sunrise due to encroaching cloud. Lows -1 to +4 C east and north, readings near 4 to 7 C south and west towards sunrise.

SATURDAY intervals of generally light to moderate rain from shortly after sunrise in southwest, later in east and north, lasting generally to late afternoon, one or two locally heavy downpours in central counties, 5 to 15 mm rain, and highs 12 to 14 C.

SUNDAY 17th partly cloudy to overcast, lows near 7 C, highs 12 to 15 C. Some scattered showers before rain by late afternoon or evening spreading in from west.

MONDAY increasing cloud for east, overcast further west, eventually an interval of rain or showers, becoming windy by late in day at least near south and west coasts (southwest 60-90 km/hr), lows near 10 C and highs near 13 C.

TUESDAY showers ending, clearing, and somewhat cooler, lows near 6 C and highs near 10 or 11 C.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY fairly dry except for a few northern counties, and quite warm, highs 14 to 17 C. It could stay quite mild into weekend of 23rd-24th but colder days could arrive just before end of March.

My local weather on Thursday was sunny with a pleasant high of 10 C; even so barely above freezing near higher and shaded roads through nearby pass at 1500 meters. Warm in eastern states (25 to 28 C in many locations) but a cold front in Ohio and Indiana set off deadly tornados in some places.

Saturday, 16 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 1 to 2 deg above normal ... further rainfalls about 75% to 100% of average amounts, with brief dry intervals. Partly cloudy to overcast most of the time.

    FORECASTS

TODAY intervals of generally light to moderate rain from shortly after sunrise in southwest, later in east and north, lasting generally to late afternoon, one or two locally heavy downpours in central counties, 5 to 15 mm rain, and highs 12 to 14 C.

TONIGHT cloudy, a few spots of drizzle followed by an interval of light rain in parts of south and west before sunrise, lows near 7 C.

SUNDAY 17th partly cloudy to overcast, highs 12 to 15 C. Some intervals of rain, more persistent in west, central and later into northern counties.

Rain will spread in from south late Tuesday lasting into early Wednesday, about 5-10 expected. Lows near 5 C for early Wednesday, clearing during the morning.

Later WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY fairly dry except for a few northern counties, and after highs of 10 to 12 C on Wednesday, turning quite warm for Thursday and Friday with highs 13 to 16 C. It could rain again late Friday and turn a bit cooler for weekend of 23rd-24th (near 10 C) after which a battle could set up between colder air spreading south and the milder air trying to return from the southeast, but colder days could win out just before end of March.

My local weather on Friday was sunny with a high near 12 C. We are expecting a warm spell to persist to about mid-week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY increasing cloud for east, overcast further west, eventually an interval of rain or showers, becoming windy by late in day at least near south and west coasts (southwest 60-90 km/hr), and highs near 13 C. About 10-15 mm of rain expected, possibly less in some locations.

FRIDAY turning windy and colder with a few showers, winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr, lows near 6 C and highs 9 to 11 C.

SATURDAY is likely to remain cool and windy, highs 7 to 10 C, then a little milder on SUNDAY 24th, rain by later in the day. after which a battle could set up between colder air spreading south and the milder air trying to return from the southeast, but the net result now appears to be a windy interval with cool to average temperatures, various guidance not that unified on timing but roughly 28th to 31st of March.

My local weather on Sunday was sunny with a high near 17 C. It was into low or even mid 20s in lower elevations of BC and Pacific northwest states. It is now turning a lot colder in eastern North America with widespread lake effect snowfall.

    FORECASTS

TODAY showers ending or more isolated, partial clearing later this morning into mid-day period, and highs near 11 C.

TONIGHT partly cloudy to overcast, lows 4 to 7 C.

THURSDAY will bring a mix of cloud and sun, and scattered showers more likely in northern counties, warmer with highs near 15 C.

FRIDAY turning windy and colder with a few showers, winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr, lows near 6 C and highs 9 to 11 C.

Thursday, 21 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 1 to 2 deg below normal after today's end to the mild spell, rainfalls about 75% of average amounts, with brief dry intervals. Partly cloudy to overcast most of the time.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will bring a mix of cloud and sun, and scattered showers more likely in northern counties, turning warmer with highs near 15 C.

TONIGHT partly cloudy to overcast, windy, passing showers, and lows 5 to 7 C.

FRIDAY windy and turning colder with a few squally showers, winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr, lows near 6 C and highs 9 to 11 C.

SATURDAY will remain cool and windy, lows 2 to 5 C and highs 7 to 10 C, with a few showers. Some could turn wintry on higher terrain in north.

SUNDAY less windy, intervals of light rain by afternoon, lows 1 to 4 C and highs 8 to 12 C.

Unsettled and possibly windy at times as the month draws to a close. The flow will probably back around to easterly as the Sunday disturbance loses energy and drifts south of Britain by Monday, and after that various other frontal systems will rotate around with temperatures quite cool for late March. Daytime highs 8 to 11 C, overnight lows 3 to 6 C. Deep low pressure is likely to develop by about Tuesday but its stronger winds will probably stay south and later east of Ireland as it tracks into southern Britain.

My local weather on Wednesday was partly cloudy to overcast with a high near 12 C. Turning colder tonight (local time) as a mix of rain and wet snow edges south and west from Alberta and central B.C., but still dry locally.

Wondering about the spring equinox? Apparently it came and went early Wednesday 20th at around 0308h. In fact every spring equinox until 2044 will be on the 20th (in UTC), after which leap years will see late 19th times, joined by 2077 by two consecutive 19th equinox dates every four years. A return appearance of occasional more familiar 21st of march dates begins after the missing 2100 leap year resets the schedule but even after that, most years will have spring equinox on the 20th again, further resets in 2200 and 2300 (planned as non leap years) will result in the 24t century having a blend of later 21st and 22nd dates. The whole cycle starts all over (as designed) when 2400 is once again a leap year.

Friday, 22 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 1 to 2 deg below normal and rainfalls now expected to total about 25% to 50% above average amounts, heaviest in south; rainfall will become quite persistent after Sunday.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be windy, turning colder with a few squally showers, winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr, lows near 6 C and highs 9 to 11 C. Slight chance of hail and thunder, sleety or mixed wintry showers on higher terrain in north.

TONIGHT windy and cold with passing showers, some of them wintry on higher terrain. Lows 2 to 5 C.

SATURDAY will remain cool and windy, and highs 7 to 10 C, with a few showers. Some could turn wintry on higher terrain in north.

SUNDAY less windy, intervals of light rain by afternoon, lows 1 to 4 C and highs 8 to 12 C.

MONDAY outbreaks of rain will be heavy and persistent in parts of south and central counties, 15-25 mm possible. Lows near 6 C and highs near 10 C.

TUESDAY to FRIDAY of next week will continue unsettled and breezy at times. The flow will probably back around to easterly as the Sunday-Monday disturbance loses energy and drifts south of Ireland and Britain by Monday into Tuesday, and after that various other frontal systems will rotate around with temperatures quite cool for late March. Rainfall will be frequent and will total about 20-30 mm additional. Daytime highs 8 to 11 C, overnight lows 3 to 6 C. Deep low pressure is likely to develop by about Tuesday southwest of Munster, but its stronger winds will probably stay south and later east of Ireland as it tracks into southern Britain. Several other disturbances will rotate around until the upper low fades out in early April when a more settled pattern could replace it.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast and cool with a few light showers, highs near 7 C. A cold rainstorm on northerly winds is developing for the east coast cities of the U.S., with a band of heavy snowfall inland over higher terrain there on Saturday. NYC could see 75 to 100 mm of rain on Saturday. There has only been one rainfall in March in NYC heavier than 100 mm (in 155 years).

Saturday, 23 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 1 to 2 deg below normal and rainfalls are now expected to total about 25% to 50% above average amounts, heaviest in south; rainfall will become quite persistent after Sunday.

    FORECASTS

SATURDAY will remain cool and windy, and highs 7 to 10 C, with a few showers, some could include thunder and hail, and also could turn wintry on higher terrain in north. Winds west to northwest 60 to 80 km/hr in exposed areas.

TONIGHT will be cloudy wit a few clear intervals, showers becoming more isolated. Lows 1 to 4 C.

SUNDAY less windy, variable cloud followed by intervals of light rain by afternoon, lows 1 to 4 C and highs 8 to 12 C.

MONDAY outbreaks of rain will be heavy and persistent in parts of south and central counties, 15-25 mm possible. Lows near 6 C and highs near 10 C.

TUESDAY to FRIDAY of next week will continue unsettled and breezy at times. The flow will back around to easterly by late Monday into Tuesday, and after that various other frontal systems will rotate around with temperatures quite cool for late March. Winds will eventually return to a southerly direction, but stronger winds will be confined to regions well south of Ireland. Rainfall will be frequent and will total about 20-30 mm additional over several days. Daytime highs 8 to 11 C, overnight lows 3 to 6 C, possibly a bit colder if skies clear for any length of time.

By the EASTER WEEKEND slight improvements as weaker remnant lows will be starting to drift slowly east, but further rain seems likely into early April and the pattern stays rather unsettled with near average temperatures. (around 12 to 14 C for Easter Sunday is currently indicated)

My local weather on Friday was overcast and cold with a few light sleety showers, as wet snow fell on nearby peaks, highs near 4 C. A cold rainstorm on northerly winds is now underway for the east coast cities of the U.S., with a band of heavy snowfall inland over higher terrain there on Saturday. NYC will likely see 75 to 100 mm of rain on Saturday. There has only been one rainfall in March in NYC heavier than 100 mm (in 155 years of records) and that was in 1876 (108 mm fell on 25th, and about 97 mm fell in 2010 and over 100 mm in two days also, on two different occasions). Considerably heavier one-day rainfalls have occurred in April there so it wouldn't be too shocking if 150 mm fell in late March in a warming climate.

Sunday, 24 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 1 to 2 deg below normal and rainfalls are now expected to total about 25% to 50% above average amounts, heaviest in south; rainfall will become quite persistent starting later today.

    FORECASTS

TODAY less windy, variable cloud followed by intervals of light rain by afternoon, lows 1 to 4 C and highs 8 to 12 C.

TONIGHT rain will become heavy at times (10-15 mm possible), lows near 7 C.

MONDAY outbreaks of rain will be heavy and persistent in parts of south and central counties, a further 10-20 mm possible, some brighter intervals by afternoon as rain fragments to showers, highs near 10 C.

TUESDAY variable cloud, some heavier showers and lows near 6 C, highs near 10 C.

WEDNESDAY breezy to windy as winds become southerly 50 to 70 km/hr, intervals of rain, some persistent and heavy in south, lows near 7 C, and highs near 12 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue unsettled but will be a bit cooler again, with occasional rain or drizzle, lows near 4 C and highs 7 to 9 C.

EASTER WEEKEND may see only slight if any improvements as remnant lows will continue to drift around, some guidance places more emphasis on moderate easterly winds, but in any case lows will be around 6 C and highs around 12 to 14 C, clocks will go forward one hour on 31st (Easter Sunday) so you can view the clouds and rain for one additional hour. But less facetiously, it could also clear up a bit for a day or two after Easter, before more windy and unsettled weather probably returns from a westerly source region.

My local weather on Saturday was wet and at times foggy, and chilly at 3 C. NYC ended up with around 80 to 90 mm rainfalls, ranking around third all-time for this month. A heavy wet snow fell across upstate NY, parts of Vermont and New hampshire into Maine.

Monday, 25 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 0.5 to 1.0 deg below normal and rainfalls are now expected to total about 25% to 50% above average amounts, heaviest in south; rainfall will become quite persistent until next weekend.

    FORECASTS

TODAY outbreaks of rain will be heavy and persistent in parts of south and central counties, a further 10-20 mm possible, some brighter intervals by afternoon as rain fragments to showers, highs near 10 C.

TONIGHT foggy with drizzle, turning to rain towards early morning. Lows near 6 C.

TUESDAY variable cloud, some heavier showers and lows near 6 C, highs near 11 C.

WEDNESDAY breezy to windy as winds become southeasterly 50 to 70 km/hr, intervals of rain, some persistent and heavy in south, lows 5 to 7 C, and highs near 8 to 11 C but could remain in 4 to 7 C range in parts of Ulster, north Leinster and inland Connacht due to a colder easterly flow there. Some locally heavy rainfalls possible, will be more certain of details by tomorrow.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue unsettled, with occasional rain or drizzle, lows near 4 C and highs 9 to 11 C.

It now looks rather cold as east winds return in early April, but guidance is generally low-confidence past about five days in this pattern.

My local weather on Sunday started with a snowfall of about 10 cm, which slowly melted during a sunny afternoon, despite a cold high of only 2 C.

Tuesday, 26 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will be 0.5 to 1.0 deg below normal and rainfalls will be about 25% to 75% above average amounts, heaviest in south; rainfall will become quite persistent until next weekend.

ALERT: Rainfalls could become excessive in parts of southwest and south central counties, and winds eventually quite strong on south and east coasts, as deep low pressure slowly forms tonight and Wednesday near coasts of Cork and Waterford. Strong winds will first hit southwest coasts, and later southeast and east coasts, as low pressure edges inland before starting to weaken on Thursday. Total rainfalls of 30-50 mm could strike parts of inland south, 20-35 elsewhere.

    FORECASTS

TODAY outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, especially in western and southern counties; later, showers and variable cloud, still some heavier showers around, highs near 11 C.

TONIGHT rain continuing heavy at times, winds slowly increasing to southeast 50 to 70 km/hr. Lows 4 to 6 C.

WEDNESDAY breezy to windy as winds become southeasterly 50 to 70 km/hr (southerly 70 to 110 km/hr near south coast), intervals of rain, some persistent and heavy in south (20-35 mm), and highs near 8 C south, 4 to 6 C range in parts of Ulster, north Leinster and inland Connacht. Some locally heavy rainfalls possible, inland south and west will be most likely to see local downpours and possible flooding. Sleet or hail could fall especially on some higher ground in northwest, central and southeast counties. Windy on east coast also by Wednesday night and early Thursday (east-southeast 70-90 km/hr).

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue unsettled, with occasional rain or drizzle, lows near 4 C and highs 9 to 11 C. Winds will return to south or southwest as the strong Wednesday low circles back around to west and dies out.

EASTER WEEKEND may see only slight if any improvements as remnant lows will continue to drift around, and latest guidance begins to look colder in stages on Sunday into Monday in southeast winds, but in any case lows will be around 6 C and highs around 12 to 14 C, clocks will go forward one hour on 31st (Easter Sunday). It now looks rather cold as east winds return in early April, and southern England may see a locally intense rain and wind storm developing over the Channel around Monday.

My local weather on Monday was cloudy with a few brief snow showers, and highs near 5 C.

Sleet or hail showers could fall especially on some higher ground in northwest, central and southeast counties.

TONIGHT will see a few clear intervals as the offshore storm spreads cloud and rain only a short distance inland as it drifts east. Variable cloud more frequent in east and north. Cold with lows falling to -1 C in places, 3 to 5 C under cloud closer to some coasts.

THURSDAY some areas of cloud and rain will spread north in Leinster towards east Ulster. Further west, variable cloud and showers, highs near 8 C.

Saturday, 30 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... Temperatures will be close to normal values. Rainfall will be scattered and generally light at first, but heavier falls next week will eventually bring weekly totals to near normal or slightly above. Colder in stages towards end of next week. Mostly cloudy skies.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to overcast, with a few isolated showers at first, outbreaks of light rain but some places could remain dry. Fresh southerly breezes, highs 10 to 12 C.

TONIGHT (setting clocks ahead one hour) variable cloud, rain moving into southeast after midnight. Lows 2 to 5 C.

EASTER SUNDAY the rain in southeast will tend to head for central counties but some will appear intermittently around Dublin too, however, all of this activity will weaken by afternoon with remnants more to the north and west. Some parts of inland southwest could see a rather pleasant day with sunny intervals more frequent there. Highs 12 to 14 C.

MONDAY light rain at times, more persistent in morning hours in east Ulster and north Leinster as a rainfall event from central England moves in briefly. Once again, better prospects for the inland southwest at times. Lows near 4 C and highs near 11 C.

TUESDAY occasional rain, lows near 7 C and highs near 12 C.

WEDNESDAY an interval of heavier rain likely, clearing to showers, and breezy. Lows near 7 C and highs near 12 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue unsettled and rather mild with highs 12 to 15 C.

WEEKEND APRIL 6-7, scattered outbreaks of light rain, turning quite cold in north, lows 2 to 4 C and highs 8 to 11 C for most, 5 to 8 C in parts of Ulster.

It could then turn even colder especially in the north where sleet or snow are possible around Monday April 8. This colder spell will give way to milder conditions again fairly quickly.

My local weather continued drab and non spring-like on Friday with a few showers of rain and sleet, highs near 5 C. We are expecting a welcome warming trend by Sunday and highs 15-20 C on Monday and Tuesday here. It won't last very long and we'll be back into cool and unsettled weather conditions by midweek.

Easter Sunday, 31 March, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... Temperatures will be close to normal values. Rainfall will be scattered and generally light at first, but heavier falls next week will eventually bring weekly totals to near normal or slightly above. A bit colder after end of next weekend. Mostly cloudy skies.

    FORECASTS

TODAY still some bursts of heavier rain in north and northwest, with variable cloud following along, generating a few scattered showers again later on, but also with some pleasant sunny breaks. Highs about 11 to 14 C, moderate east to southeast winds may feel chilly near east coast in particular.

TONIGHT misty, fog patches, isolated showers, lows 4 to 7 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue unsettled and rather mild with lows 4 to 7 C and highs 12 to 15 C.

WEEKEND APRIL 6-7, scattered outbreaks of light rain, becoming rather windy (southwest 50 to 80 km/hr), little change in temperatures, lows 4 to 6 C and highs 9 to 13 C for most, 7 to 10 C in parts of Ulster.

It could then turn a little colder in the following week as winds turn more northwesterly, but some southern and eastern counties will remain at about the same temperature levels as this coming week, it would be the north and west feeling a bit of the chill in the new wind direction and a slight draw on an extensive area of cold modified arctic air flooding southwest into the Atlantic basin but more prominent further west. In general, expect April to be a little warmer than average and rather wet (25 to 50 per cent above normal rainfalls), sunshine may be a bit below par also.

My local weather on Saturday turned sunny with cloudy intervals for the first time in over a week, and this created a slight rise in temperature to around 8-10 C. We're expecting a nice warmer spell for about three days before getting back into cool and unsettled conditions here. Enjoy the day and just a reminder, clocks have gone one hour forward (we've been in this regime for three weeks here).

Monday, 1 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures near average, rainfall frequent, light at first, but quite heavy later in the week. Cloudy. Windy intervals likely by late in week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with a few breaks, and some scattered outbreaks of rather light rain across parts of the inland south and also in east Ulster. Better chances of dry intervals and sunshine further west; highs 11 to 13 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with occasional drizzle and fog, lows near 6 C.

TUESDAY cloudy with a few breaks, outbreaks of rain more frequent in eastern counties; highs near 12 C.

WEDNESDAY variable cloud, outbreaks of rain becoming heavier from south into central counties later in day, lows near 7 C and highs near 13 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue mostly cloudy, unsettled, and breezy at times, lows near 5 C and highs near 12 C.

By WEEKEND (6-7 April) expect intervals of strong winds, rain or showers, temperatures near 9 or 10 C in north and west, 12 or 13 C south and east.

Next week could turn a bit colder at times in a northwesterly flow, highs may be held down to 8 to 11 C. Frosts are unlikely but could occur on one or two nights if clouds clear away briefly, but it looks fairly cloudy with occasional showers.

My local weather on Easter Sunday was sunny and it got a bit warmer at 10 C, warmer temperatures are expected to follow later Monday and into Tuesday but then it will be back to the previous cool and unsettled regime.

Tuesday, 2 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures near average, rainfall frequent, light at first, but quite heavy later in the week. Cloudy. Windy intervals likely by late in week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY partly cloudy to overcast, a few scattered generally light outbreaks of rain; highs near 12 C.

TONIGHT occasional rain and fog forming, mild, lows near 7 C.

WEDNESDAY variable cloud, outbreaks of rain becoming heavier from south into central counties later in day, lows near 7 C and highs near 13 C.

THURSDAY will continue mostly cloudy, unsettled, and breezy at times, lows near 5 C and highs 12 to 14 C.

FRIDAY breezy and mild, rain becoming heavy in south (20-30 mm potential), spreading into other regions later in the day, lows near 8 C and highs 13 to 15 C, Winds southeast to south 50-80 km/hr.

A strong storm is expected to develop about 200-300 miles west of Ireland around Friday night, tracking north. Even stronger winds will be sweeping across marine areas west of Connacht but so far it looks a bit too far west to bring damaging gusts onshore.

By WEEKEND (6-7 April) further intervals of strong winds early Saturday, rain or showers, partial clearing at times, temperatures near 9 or 10 C in north and west, 12 or 13 C south and east.

Next week now looking quite unsettled and temperatures a bit lower but still near average, as several frontal systems track through Ireland. A slow improving trend is possible around mid-month with some guidance showing stronger high pressure, but this is a bit far off and against the recent trends to be very confident.

My local weather on Easter Monday was sunny and quite warm at around 18 C. We get one more day of that on Tuesday, then it will be back to the previous cool and unsettled regime. A strong storm forming in the central plains states threatens widespread severe weather, and when it runs into colder air over eastern Canada, snow could develop in northern New England by Wednesday, but it will be around 10 C with rain along the U.S. east coast as this low tracks across New England towards the Gulf of St Lawrence.

Wednesday, 3 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures near to slightly above average, rainfall frequent, light at first, but quite heavy later in the week. Cloudy. Windy intervals likely by late in week.

    FORECASTS

WEDNESDAY variable cloud, outbreaks of rain becoming heavier from south into central counties later in day, lows near 7 C and highs near 13 C.

TONIGHT rain clearing away to north, lows near 5 C.

THURSDAY will continue mostly cloudy, unsettled, and breezy at times, lows near 5 C and highs 12 to 14 C.

FRIDAY breezy and mild, rain becoming heavy in south (20-30 mm potential), spreading into other regions later in the day, lows near 8 C and highs 13 to 15 C, Winds southeast to south 60-90 km/hr.

A strong storm is expected to develop about 100-200 miles west of Ireland around Friday night, tracking north. Even stronger winds will be sweeping across marine areas west of Connacht and some guidance is now indicating western coastal regions could see a few damaging gusts of 70 to 110 km/hr in western counties early Saturday.

By WEEKEND (6-7 April) intervals of strong winds early Saturday, rain or showers, partial clearing at times, temperatures near 9 or 10 C in north and west, 12 or 13 C south and east. Quite windy across all of Ireland on Saturday, but strongest gusts likely in exposed coastal areas of west and south.

Next week now looking quite unsettled and temperatures briefly a bit lower but still near average, as several frontal systems track through Ireland. A slow improving trend is possible later next week with some guidance showing stronger high pressure, but this is a bit far off and against the recent trends to be very confident. Very warm air is indicated for nearby continental Europe (into 20s) and some of that could push into southeast England but Ireland would be more llikely to remain in a transitional zone in the 13-16 C range, with some rain near frontal boundaries.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny and very warm with a high of about 22 C. A line of thunderstorms developed in the evening and gave a distant lightning display but we remain in the milder air so far; eventually it will get more unsettled with lines of possibly hail-producing showers drifting south as the warm air departs for the northern plains states.
