Saturday, 6 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, rainfall showery but quite heavy around Monday. A few breaks in the prevalent cloudy skies, today's strong winds easing to moderate and often southwesterly.

    FORECASTS

SATURDAY strong south to southwest winds 70 to 100 km/hr, easing somewhat by afternoon, passing showers but also a few brighter intervals, highs near 12 C north and west, 14 C south and east.

TONIGHT moderate southwest winds, occasional rain or showers, lows 7 to 9 C.

SUNDAY, breezy to windy (southwest 60-80 km/hr), rain or showers, partial clearing at times, temperatures steady near 9 or 10 C in north and west, 12 or 13 C south and east.

MONDAY after a partly cloudy to clear and cool night, increasing cloud, outbreaks of rain, some heavy in south and east, lows about 2 C inland north to near 6 C south, and highs 8 to 11 C. Foggy on higher terrain during afternoon and evening rainfall.

TUESDAY variable cloud, showers, breezy, cool, lows near 5 C and highs near 10 C.

WEDNESDAY milder, rain at times in northern counties, lows near 7 C and highs 12 to 14 C.

Later next week, it could turn a bit warmer with highs in 15 to 17 C range.

At the present time, very warm air has covered most of Europe and north Africa; highs on Friday were close to 35 C in a few locations in Morocco and Algeria, 27 to 30 C in parts of Spain, and 22 to 25 C in the Balkans and even into Austria. It was close to 20 C just south of Paris. This warm air will likely hang around but upper level flow will encourage it to spread west over the Atlantic so the warmer spell later in the week would be a modified return flow of this very warm air of Saharan origins. Longer range guidance suggests this pattern will break down around Sunday 14th, but could rebuild at a later stage of this month.

My local weather on Friday was mostly cloudy with a few showers, and highs near 7 C.

Sunday, 7 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, rainfall showery but quite heavy around Monday. A few breaks in the prevalent cloudy skies, today's remnant strong winds gradually easing to moderate later, briefly northeast on Monday and northwest Tuesday, but often southwesterly again by Wednesday.

    FORECASTS

SUNDAY, breezy to windy (southwest 60-90 km/hr), rain or showers, partial clearing at times in some eastern counties, temperatures steady near 9 or 10 C in north and west, 12 or 13 C south and east. Strong winds will ease gradually during afternoon, and will be nearly calm by evening.

TONIGHT any brief clear to partly cloudy intervals in north will yield to increasing cloud as rain moves into the south, lows will range from 2 C in parts of inland north, to 7 C near south coast.

MONDAY after a partly cloudy to clear and cool night, increasing cloud, outbreaks of rain, some heavy in south and east, lows about 2 C inland north to near 6 C south, and highs 8 to 11 C. Foggy on higher terrain during afternoon and evening rainfall.

TUESDAY variable cloud, showers, breezy (west-northwest 40-70 km/hr), cool, lows near 5 C and highs near 10 C.

WEDNESDAY milder, rain at times in northern counties, lows near 7 C and highs 12 to 14 C.

Later next week, it could turn a bit warmer with highs in 15 to 17 C range. Some rain could hit western coastal counties but better chances of dry and warm intervals further east. Cooler in stages by weekend of 13th-14th.

I mentioned the warm air covering most of Europe and north Africa yesterday; today's highs included 24 C in Paris, and a reading near 30C south of Frankfurt, also 30 C in southern Spain and as high as 38C on the coast of Algeria. As stated yesterday, this warm air will likely hang around but upper level flow will encourage it to spread west over the Atlantic so the warmer spell later in the week would be a modified return flow of this very warm air of Saharan origins. Longer range guidance suggests this pattern will break down around Sunday 14th, but could rebuild at a later stage of this month.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast and cool with a slight fall of wet snow early on, highs near 5 C. A total eclipse of the Sun will occur across the south-central to northeastern U.S. on Monday; large crowds of people are expected along the path; not going ourselves as we saw the 2017 event and that will have to do (it's a logistical nightmare with so many people gathering, several states have declared an emergency already!)

    FORECASTS

TODAY outbreaks of rain, some heavy in south and east with 20-30 mm potential, highs 7 to 10 C. Foggy on higher terrain during afternoon and evening rainfall.

TONIGHT rain ending, windy at times with passing showers, winds northwest 40-60 k /hr, lows near 5 C.

TUESDAY variable cloud, showers, breezy (west-northwest 40-70 km/hr), cool, and highs near 10 C.

WEDNESDAY milder, rain at times in northern counties, lows near 7 C and highs 12 to 14 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud, a few showers mostly in southwest, mild. Lows near 10 C and highs near 15 C.

FRIDAY variable cloud, better chances of sunshine in east, breezy, mild, lows near 10 C and highs 14 to 17 C.

NEXT WEEKEND turning somewhat cooler, breezy with westerly winds 40-60 km/hr, showers not too frequent but not entirely dry, lows near 5 C and highs 10 to 12 C. It could begin to turn quite warm again during the following week (17-19 C possible).

Near-record warmth continued to be widespread in parts of continental Europe and North Africa.

My local weather on Sunday was mostly cloudy wit a high near 8 C.

Tuesday, 9 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, a drier trend developing but still a few showers at times. Winds turning northwest today, but often southwesterly again by Wednesday.

    FORECASTS

TODAY variable cloud, showers, breezy (west-northwest 40-70 km/hr), cool, and highs near 10 C.

TONIGHT rain at times, some mist and fog, lows 5 to 8 C.

WEDNESDAY milder, rain at times, more persistent in northern counties, and highs 12 to 14 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud, a few showers mostly in southwest, mild. Lows near 10 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

FRIDAY variable cloud, better chances of sunshine in east, breezy, mild, lows near 10 C and highs 14 to 18 C. Cooler late in the day in Ulster and parts of Connacht.

NEXT WEEKEND turning somewhat cooler, breezy with westerly winds 40-60 km/hr, showers not too frequent but not entirely dry, later Sunday could see more persistent showers, lows near 5 C and highs 10 to 12 C. Cool and breezy on Monday but then it could begin to turn quite warm again during the following week (15-18 C possible).

Near-record warmth continued to be widespread in parts of continental Europe and North Africa, and it was 29 C on Monday in Munich.

My local weather on Monday was mostly cloudy with a high near 6 C. Weather turned out reasonably well for the eclipse zone, only a few areas had any significant cloud and many had a very good view in seasonable temperatures which dropped off by 5 or 6 C deg during the peak (even where sun only 90% covered reports of a noticeable drop).

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, a drier trend developing but still a few showers at times. Winds turning northwest today, but often southwesterly again by Wednesday. A cooler trend will develop by weekend but it will probably only fall back to near average and could rise slowly after this interval ends (on Tuesday 16th).

    FORECASTS

TODAY milder, rain at times, more persistent in western and later northern counties, and highs 12 to 14 C.

TONIGHT foggy or misty, some light rain in north, mild, lows 8 to 11 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud, a few showers mostly in southwest, warm; highs 15 to 18 C.

SATURDAY variable cloud, turning cooler in west and north, a few passing showers there also, eventually spreading into east and south by afternoon or evening. Lows 7 to 9 C and highs 12 to 15 C.

SUNDAY, somewhat cooler again, breezy with westerly winds 40-60 km/hr, showers and a few longer intervals of rain more likely in western counties, lows 5 to 7 C and highs 10 to 12 C.

By Monday it will begin to clear gradually while staying rather cool and breezy, but then it could begin to turn a bit warmer again during the following week (14-16 C, with 15-18 C possible inland southeast).

My local weather on Tuesday stayed quite cool and unsettled with one or two briefly heavy showers of hail or wet snow, and brief sunny intervals feeling a bit warmer but never getting much above 8 C.

My local weather on Wednesday finally cleared up to sunny skies and highs near 10 C. The Masters golf will start out with an interval of heavy rain and possibly strong wind gusts; play could be delayed at times until about noon (local time) but should be less disrupted by afternoon despite blustery winds, then Friday will continue breezy, rather cool (15-18 C) and dry; the weekend is expected to be very pleasant and quite warm there (24-27 C).

TODAY variable cloud, better chances of sunshine in east, breezy, warm at first, highs 13 to 16 C. Cooler late in the day in Ulster and parts of Connacht (8 to 11 C).

TONIGHT will be breezy with occasional showers in north, lows 7 to 9 C.

SATURDAY variable cloud, turning cooler in west and north, a few passing showers there also, eventually spreading into east and south by afternoon or evening. Lows 7 to 9 C and highs 12 to 15 C.

It could start to turn quite cool by weekend of 20th-21st and beyond.

My local weather on Thursday was cloudy with a high near 9 C. Spring is very slow to develop at least up at our elevation.

Saturday, 13 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, a drier trend developing but still a few showers at times. Winds often westerly and gusty. A cooler trend will develop by later in the weekend but it will probably only fall back to 1-2 deg below average and could be rising slowly again as this interval ends.

    FORECASTS

TODAY variable cloud, turning cooler in west and north, a few passing showers there also, eventually spreading into east and south by afternoon or evening. Lows 7 to 9 C and highs 12 to 15 C.

TONIGHT will be breezy with occasional showers, lows 5 to 7 C.

SUNDAY, somewhat cooler again, breezy with westerly winds 40-60 km/hr, showers and a few longer intervals of rain more likely in western counties, lows 5 to 7 C and highs 10 to 12 C.

MONDAY partly cloudy, passing showers, staying rather cool and breezy (lows near 5 C, highs 11 to 13 C).

TUESDAY cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers, cool, lows 1 to 4 C, highs 8 to 11 C.

WEDNESDAY occasional rain in north, partly cloudy and a bit warmer again in south, highs 11 to 14 C.

THURSDAY to WEEKEND 20-21 APRIL seems likely to stay fairly mild and dry as long as high pressure stays relatively close, but different forecast guidance show potential for this to break down, so not a high confidence forecast at present, partly cloudy to sunny and near 15 C. Even less confidence on trends beyond next weekend but after a briefly colder turn it could begin to warm rapidly near end of April.

My local weather on Friday was cloudy with a high near 10 C. Spring is very slow to develop at least up at our elevation, no sign of a "green up" yet and any remnant snow in nearby forested areas is staying put for now (in town it is just about all gone). It looks a lot closer to spring down in nearby valleys.

Sunday, 14 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, a drier trend developing after an interval of heavier rain later today into Monday afternoon, winds westerly and gusty. A cooler trend will develop by later today but it will probably only fall back to 1-2 deg below average and could be rising slowly again as this interval ends.

    FORECASTS

TODAY, increasing cloud, breezy with westerly winds 40-60 km/hr, showers and a few longer intervals of rain more likely in western counties, lows 5 to 7 C and highs 10 to 12 C.

TONIGHT will be breezy with rain and a few thundery showers, hail possible, lows 5 to 7 C.

MONDAY partly cloudy, blustery with passing showers, staying rather cool and breezy, winds west to northwest 50 to 70 km/hr, and highs 11 to 13 C.

TUESDAY cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers, cool, lows 1 to 4 C, highs 8 to 11 C.

WEDNESDAY occasional rain in north, partly cloudy and a bit warmer again in south, highs 11 to 14 C.

THURSDAY to WEEKEND 20-21 APRIL seems likely to stay fairly mild and dry as long as high pressure stays relatively close, but different forecast guidance show potential for this to break down, so not a high confidence forecast at present, partly cloudy to sunny and near 15 C if all goes according to consensus. Even less confidence on trends beyond next weekend but after a briefly colder turn it could begin to warm rapidly near end of April.

My local weather on Saturday was sunny with cloudy intervals, and a high near 13 C.

Monday, 15 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, a drier trend developing after a few heavy showers later today into Tuesday afternoon, winds westerly and gusty. A cooler trend is developing today but it will probably only fall back to 1-2 deg below average for a couple of days, and could be rising slowly again as this interval ends.

    FORECASTS

TODAY partly cloudy, blustery with passing showers, one or two could be thundery, hail possible, staying rather cool and breezy, winds west to northwest 50 to 70 km/hr, and highs 11 to 13 C (8 to 10 C in north).

TONIGHT will continue breezy and cool with a few passing showers, lows 1 to 4 C, slight risk of frost inland north.

TUESDAY cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers, cool, lows 1 to 4 C, highs 8 to 11 C.

WEDNESDAY occasional rain in north, partly cloudy and a bit warmer again in south, highs 11 to 14 C.

THURSDAY to WEEKEND 20-21 APRIL will likely turn fairly warm and dry as high pressure stays relatively close, would expect rather cool overnight readings away from west and north coasts, lows 2 to 5 C (5 to 8 C near coasts), but highs of about 14 to 17 C and perhaps a good balance of sunny to cloudy intervals, although cloud could be more frequent near Atlantic coasts.

Guidance for the week of 22 to 26 April and beyond still quite volatile and low-confidence. I tend to discount suggestions in guidance of colder flows from east or north but it does look unsettled anyway.

My local weather on Sunday was sunny and a bit warmer at around 16 C.

Tuesday, 16 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, a drier trend developing after a few showers today and Wednesday afternoon, winds westerly but less gusty now. A cooler trend has developed but it will probably only fall back to 1-2 deg below average for a couple of days, and could be rising slowly again as this interval ends.

    FORECASTS

TODAY cloudy with sunny intervals, showers becoming more isolated by afternoon, breezy and cool, highs 8 to 11 C.

TONIGHT variable cloud, a few clear intervals, and isolated showers, lows 2 to 5 C.

WEDNESDAY occasional rain in north and east, partly cloudy to overcast, and a bit warmer again in south, highs 11 to 14 C.

    THURSDAY partly cloudy, lows 2 to 5 C, and highs 13 to 16 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy to sunny, lows 2 to 5 C, and highs 14 to 17 C.

WEEKEND will likely stay fairly warm and dry as high pressure stays relatively close, would expect rather cool overnight readings away from west and north coasts, lows 2 to 5 C (5 to 8 C near coasts), but highs of about 14 to 17 C and perhaps a good balance of sunny to cloudy intervals, although cloud could be more frequent near Atlantic coasts. This trend could persist a few days beyond the weekend, steering influences are weak and eventually a northerly or easterly drift could set in, ending the pleasant spell gradually and possibly returning cloud and occasional light rain, but at least it does look like a break from frequent rain will take place, and perhaps this will turn out to be the start of a larger-scale pattern change as above normal rainfall seems to be almost a constant theme since early last year.

My local weather on Monday was sunny with a high near 17 C.

Wednesday, 17 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, a drier trend developing, winds generally light to moderate northwesterly becoming variable over weekend, possible light easterly next week. A cooler trend has developed but it will probably only fall back to 1-2 deg below average for a couple of days, and could be rising slowly again over the weekend, falling back to current levels later next week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY occasional rain in north and east, partly cloudy to overcast in south and parts of west, and a bit warmer again, highs 11 to 14 C.

TONIGHT variable cloud, a few clear intervals, and isolated showers, lows 2 to 5 C.

    THURSDAY partly cloudy, lows 2 to 5 C, and highs 13 to 16 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy, isolated showers central counties, to sunny skies in parts of south and east, lows 2 to 5 C, and highs 14 to 17 C.

WEEKEND will likely stay fairly warm and dry as high pressure stays relatively close, would expect rather cool overnight readings away from west and north coasts, lows 2 to 5 C (5 to 8 C near coasts), but highs of about 14 to 18 C and perhaps a good balance of sunny to cloudy intervals, although cloud could be more frequent near coasts.

The heat over Europe (and eastern Med) has been pushed further south and is now only evident in places like southern Spain, Italy, and Greece into western Turkey. Seasonably cool air now covers areas further north with highs of 8 to 12 C widespread. Severe river flooding from snow melt in the s. Ural region is affecting parts of Russia and Kazakhstan. Over a quarter million people are either displaced (evacuated) and/or flooded out.

My local weather on Tuesday was partly cloudy to overcast with a few passing showers of hail, and a high near 4 C. It is brisk and quite cold out tonight (-1 C).

Thursday, 18 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, a drier trend developing, winds generally light to moderate northwesterly becoming variable over weekend, possible light easterly next week. Slowly turning a bit cooler next week in a northeast wind flow, cooler in eastern counties than near west coast. Overall quite dry, except for Monday, when about 5 mm of rain could fall in a few places from streamers forming over Irish Sea moving south west.

    FORECASTS

TODAY partly cloudy (overcast in parts of north at times), isolated showers, and highs 13 to 16 C.

TONIGHT partly cloudy to overcast, rain at times in Ulster, north Leinster, lows 2 to 5 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy, isolated showers central counties, to sunny skies in parts of south and east, lows 2 to 5 C, and highs 14 to 17 C.

SATURDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, lows 1 to 4 C and highs 14 to 18 C.

SUNDAY will be sunny with scattered frosts well inland, lows -1 to 4 C, highs 14 to 18 C. Winds light and variable.

By MONDAY, variable cloud and a bit cooler especially in eastern counties as wind turns northeast (30-40 km/hr), patchy rain showers with small hail possible, in streamers flowing inland from Irish Sea. Better sunshine and warmer temperatures further west. Lows 2 to 6 C, highs near 12 C east and north, 14 C south and central, 17 C west.

The rest of next week will likely be similar although not every day will produce organized shower activity, and temperatures will be in a range of about 10 C east to 15 C west, with nights close to freezing away from coasts and larger towns. Skies will often be partly cloudy to overcast, but sunny at times near west coast.

My local weather on Wednesday was mostly cloudy with passing snow or hail showers, quite cold, near 4 C. We are looking at a slow moderating trend back to near normal by Sunday. I will be taking a trip south to Utah and Arizona around Tuesday of next week for about two weeks, looking forward to a change of scenery (and warmer weather).

Friday, 19 April, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, a drier trend developing, winds generally light to moderate, becoming variable over weekend, possible light easterly next week. Slowly turning a bit cooler next week in a northeast wind flow, cooler in eastern counties than near west coast. Overall quite dry, but rain will begin to return gradually in a cooler flow next week; it won't be too heavy for most places.

    FORECASTS

TODAY partly cloudy, isolated showers central counties, to sunny skies in parts of south and east, lows 2 to 5 C, and highs 14 to 17 C. Generally clearing skies by late afternoon and evening.

TONIGHT clear and rather cold, isolated ground frost likely, lows 1 to 4 C.

SATURDAY will be sunny with a few cloudy intervals, lows 1 to 4 C and highs 14 to 18 C.

SUNDAY will be sunny with scattered frosts well inland, lows -1 to 4 C, highs 14 to 18 C. Winds light and variable.

By MONDAY, variable cloud and a bit cooler especially in eastern counties as wind turns north-northeast (20-40 km/hr), patchy rain showers with small hail possible, in streamers flowing inland from Irish Sea. Better sunshine and warmer temperatures further west and in southern counties also. Lows 2 to 6 C, highs 12 to 14 C east and north, 15 C south and central, 16 or 17 C west.

The rest of next week will likely be more cloudy but still bright intervals at times, and although not every day will produce organized shower activity, some rain is likely in patchy showers, and temperatures will be in a range of about 10 C east to 15 C west, with nights close to freezing away from coasts and larger towns. Skies will often be partly cloudy to overcast, but sunny at times near west coast. The cooler trend will be offset by the seasonal rise in potential readings given a higher sun angle and longer daylight, so the difference will be more significant as a difference from normal.

My local weather on Thursday was partly cloudy to overcast and around 8 C.

Saturday, 20 April, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, a drier trend developing, winds generally light and variable over weekend, light to moderate northeasterly next week. Slowly turning a bit cooler next week in a northeast wind flow, cooler in eastern counties than near west coast. Overall quite dry, but rain will gradually return in cloudier conditions, even so it will be variable with some dry intervals in the mix.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with a few clouds and highs 14 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will be mostly clear with scattered frosts inland, lows -1 to +4 C.

SUNDAY will be sunny with light winds, highs 14 to 18 C, somewhat warmer in western counties than east due to a slight onshore flow near the Irish Sea coast.

MONDAY, variable cloud and a bit cooler especially in eastern counties as wind turns northeast (20-40 km/hr), patchy rain showers with small hail possible, in hit or miss streamers flowing inland from Irish Sea. Better sunshine and warmer temperatures further west and near south coast. Lows 1 to 5 C, highs near 12 C east and north, 14 C south and central, 17 C west. Rain could avoid a lot of places as wind could hold any streamers near coastline or just offshore.

TUESDAY and probably also WEDNESDAY, little change as a weak northerly flow tries to erode the high pressure area which will be drifting around to the west of Ireland. Eventually some patchy light rain or drizzle could begin to form in parts of east Ulster and Leinster but it might not accumulate to much more than 1-2 mm. Lows both days 2 to 5 C and highs 10 to 13 C (possibly 13 to 16 C if sunshine gets through cloud in west).

By later in the week, more organized rainfall areas will begin to intrude from the south and east, in moderate east to northeast winds. It may be quite chilly as a result, with temperatures near 6 C overnight and 8 to 11 C daytime hours. Rain is not expected to be too heavy at first. By the weekend of 27-28 April it could be somewhat heavier though.

My local weather on Friday was sunny and cool with a high of about 8 C. It is still quite frosty at night here and spring is coming along very slowly, but the bears are now out of hibernation and wandering around the town.

MONDAY, variable cloud and a bit cooler especially in eastern counties as wind turns northeast (20-40 km/hr), patchy rain showers with small hail possible, in hit or miss streamers flowing inland from Irish Sea. Better sunshine and warmer temperatures further west and near south coast, highs near 12 C east and north, 14 C south and central, 17 C west. Rain could avoid a lot of places as wind could hold any streamers near coastline or just offshore.

TUESDAY partly cloudy, isolated showers, lows 2 to 5 C, highs 11 to 14 C.

WEDNESDAY, variable cloud, some patchy light rain or drizzle could begin to form in parts of east Ulster and Leinster but it might not accumulate to much more than 1-2 mm. Lows 2 to 5 C and highs 10 to 13 C (possibly 14 or 15 C if sunshine gets through cloud in west).

By later in the week, more organized rainfall areas will begin to intrude from Atlantic sourced depressions, with the south and east at risk of heavier rainfalls by Friday into Saturday, in moderate southeast to east winds. It may be quite chilly as a result, with temperatures near 6 C overnight and 8 to 11 C daytime hours. Rain is not expected to be too heavy in northern and east-central counties, at least for a while.

By the week of 29 April to 3rd of May, variable conditions expected with rain or showers at times.

My local weather on Saturday was sunny and cool with a high near 10 C. Will be "hitting the road" on Sunday and flying south on Tuesday after a brief coastal visit. Will make arrangements for forecasts to continue appearing, but can probably manage until Tuesday.

Wednesday, 24 April, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, the recent drier trend slowly giving way to showery conditions then more organized rainfall by weekend. Cooler in eastern counties than near west coast.

    FORECASTS

TODAY sunny with afternoon cloudy intervals, isolated showers; highs 10 to 13 C (possibly 14 or 15 C if sunshine gets through cloud in west).

TONIGHT cloudy, rain by late tonight in western counties, lows 3 to 6 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud, showers or intervals of light rain, lows 3 to 6 C, highs 12 to 15 C.

FRIDAY intervals of rain in south, parts of west, variable cloud east and north, isolated showers, lows near 6 C and highs near 12 C.

NEXT WEEK unsettled and cool at first, turning warm and humid by about Wednesday, with rain at times, highs 16 to 20 C.

My travel weather on Tuesday starting from Vancouver, BC and ending in Las Vegas NV by afternoon, was generally clear all down the flight path with buildups of showers to our west near Reno, but clear and hot in Vegas, high was 32 C. A slow cooling trend lies ahead (32 here today was about 5 above average for late April, but today's record here was 37 C); we expect to be contending with a frontal passage across our intended route in Utah on Saturday but otherwise mostly perfect weather for planned activities (sleep at this point).

My travel weather on Wednesday continued sunny and very warm in Las Vegas, max of 28 C. Saturday, 27 April, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, frequent rainfall until Tuesday, a drying and warming trend after that.

    FORECASTS

TODAY a few showers in southeast, developing into longer intervals of light rain east-central counties, rain drifting further west during afternoon, also brief sunny breaks, and highs 10 to 13 C.

TONIGHT clear intervals, cold, lows -1 to +4 C.

SUNDAY variable cloud, isolated showers, highs 11 to 14 C.

MONDAY overcast with occasional rain, lows near 6 C and highs 11 to 14 C.

TUESDAY variable cloud, showers, outbreaks of heavier rain over eastern counties, lows near 5 C and highs 10 to 13 C.

WEDNESDAY TO SATURDAY 4th, a warmer interval, especially over northern half of country as some of the cloud will linger over southern counties, where a few additional intervals of light rain could continue; highs 15 to 20 C in north, 10 to 15 C in south with lowest readings likely to be near south coast and over higher inland locations. Winds will be generally moderate southeast to east during this interval.

After a slightly cooler interval approximately Sunday 5th to Tuesday 7th, with rain at times, further warm spells are possible.

My travel weather on Friday started with an end to the dry spell in the Las Vegas area, eventually they saw 6 mm of rain, setting a daily record (the previous one was only 1 mm set in 1963). We travelled into southern Utah staying a bit ahead of a line of heavy showers which occasionally just about passed us, but as they approached our final destination (Kanab, UT) the showers began to break up in the past few hours. The front has dropped the temperature quite dramatically to 5 C locally and 10 C in Las Vegas (it was 18 C well before noon and 12 C at 1 p.m. as we left). As the front dissipates and sunshine returns on Saturday here, we're expecting a gradual recovery to about 16 C and then 20 C on Sunday, into low 20s for rest of our stay (to 4th). The stormy skies really enhance the very colorful rock formations around here and as long as the rain is now done, we'll take this outcome. Further east, a strong front in eastern Nebraska caused a line of severe storms and tornados rated F-4 if not F-5; damage reports are extensive but so far I have not seen any casualty reports, which would be remarkable but I suspect there will eventually be some with large wedge tornados hitting outskirts of Omaha.

Sunday, 28 April, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal, frequent rainfall until Tuesday, a drying and warming trend after that.

    FORECASTS

TODAY sunny and cold at first, variable cloud cover soon developing, isolated showers to occasional rain, highs 11 to 14 C.

TONIGHT cloudy, occasional rain, lows near 6 C.

My travel weather on Saturday in southern Utah and northern Arizona was slowly clearing, but a few showers developed around early afternoon, evidence of snow over higher terrain (near 2500 meters asl) but at lower elevations it was around 15 deg C except under heaviest shower cells where it dropped briefly back to 7 C. Clear skies now and 5 C. TV news saying northern Utah has seen beneficial rains given a dry start to the spring, but local flooding has resulted there (no signs of that in southern Utah, dry washes had no water flowing today despite the 10 mm rainfalls yesterday — wash being desert southwest term for creek).
