Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The picture came off the Sam Bennett Getty images page.
It was probably picked because he is holding a medal and the staffer assumed it was important

Because we were talking about Oisin O'Callaghan, I thought, why not.

    Haha Ocean O'Callaghan.

In fairness DH mountain biking looks mental maybe he should have beat Katie and Sam for the big one :D

I would just like to point out at this time, it wasn't me who made the mistake.

Maybe it's because the tour is on TG4 and RTE shows the odd bit of boxing.

The director of that video, who is Irish, did his best to encourage correct pronunciation, but finally surrendered.

Sam won the Irish Independant Sports Star of the Year.

Hopefully he celebrates with a stage win or 2 this week.

Another one for Sam - very messy sprint.

Enjoyable to watch that finish, fair play to him.

Easy win in the end. Be interesting to see how Dekker progresses.

Added insult to injury by not knowing who Dekker was in the interview :)

50th pro win for him, he said in the interview

It was a messy sprint alright. Great win for Sam considering the other top sprinters paticipating.
Sam is obviously a well-liked guy in the peloton; a lot of the other riders congratulated him after they crossed the finish line.

Was only able to watch the early part of the race. Looking forward to watching the finish. Carlton was saying it would all boil down to it at at the end because of the heat over there.

    Well done Sam.

MOD VOICE: One and only warning to all of those who had the time to watch it live and then spoiled it. Many posters didn't or couldn't. Unless its a stage or race specific thread, don't post it until the next day, you ruin it for those of us who can't see it live. Next time its a card or ban for the rest of the season.

I assume it's fine to post stuff as long as it's spoilered right?

Technically yes but in reality, you may as well put up fliers to say something really interesting happened with Sam. I can set up a race thread for it and people can post in there to their hearts content?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,097 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Do we have a general race thread for all the smaller races that don't get stage threads ?

You can start a thread for any race, no matter how small! Threads are free to start! :)

Yeah, it's a lot of hassle to be setting up specific thread for smaller races every day that probably wouldn't be posted much in..... but at the same time not mentioning a win (or loss) till the next day will kill off discussion. Maybe if people posted in a general racing thread or something... Think their used to be one.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 25,180 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

Makes sense, put a spoiler notice in the title that it could contain spoilers for any race, job done. People who want to avoid spoilers can just avoid the thread for the day.

Good analysis by Chris Horner on YouTube.

He benefited from a couple of things and took his opportunity really well.

Got a mention at the end of the sports section in the Virgin Media news at 1230.

I've a feeling we'll be hearing more cycling news there on virgin media since they got the rights to show some races.

Its not just RTE and Newstalk. Cycling Weekly are running a "quiz" (aka marketing/advertising) on their website and this is one of the questions:

No idea, was reported on StickyBottle during the week they had done a deal with Discovery (EUrosport/GCN owner) to show some races. Sinead Kissane will likely be promoted from Rugby correspondent to Cycling correspondent for the news :pac:

Is it a mistake for Sam to complain about other riders messing with his lead out train, will this only encourage more of the same as they now know it rattles him.

I didn't think that's what he done, I think he was rightly pointing out that if they focused more on their own sprint rather than his, they might have a chance. I think it was a nice dig at all of them saying, ha, can none of you actually put a sprint together. He didn't look rattled during the sprint at all.

Watched it this morning - some finish given the kick he had to do to get back into position. If he was complaining about just before that, where he lost the wheel, it looked more like the road narrowing than others trying to get him off the wheel tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭dublin49

San Remo next,I know Cav won it but it probably takes a very unlikely concurrence of events for the top punchers to allow a bunch sprint ,how would Ver der Poel or Van Art for instance allow Sam to be there after the Poggio.

The Vans will probably attack with Alaphillipe and Sam will sit in the bunch ready in case another team pull them back in

The road narrowed but they definitely squeezed him out. He's probably a bit wary of standing his ground too much in case he gets punished like last year.

Much as I'd love to see him win I think he'll struggle to stay with the leaders when they hit the Poggio. The pace carried into the start of this climb usually breaks up the field and any DQS riders will be working for JA at that stage one would imagine. I really hope I'm wrong though.

I think it depends. Sam has got over the likes of the Muur in the BrinkBank tour with the leaders way longer than the other sprinters.

Is the distance an issue for Sam - read somewhere before that's another reason Milan San Remo doesn't suit him.

I actually think he's looking stronger this year and fancy him for a podium at least.

Let's face it, there's no way Sam stays with VDP if he's trying to drop Alaphillipe and Van Aert on the poggio.... It'd take some seriously commited trains to pull those three back. Sam's best chance is if Ala isn't there at the end and Quickstep, FDJ, BORA pull like dogs to bring them back.

It’s a fascinating race every year. It’s maybe 50/50 of breakaway and sprint finishes. You’d assume quickstep will try Alaphilipe and Sam only if others bring it back

Anyone have any idea what's next for Sam? What does the rest of his season look like etc.

I'd guess it focused around defending the Green Jersey at the tour!
