I don't know if its longer, and we haven't had as much snow yet, but the temps are definately colder than they were according to the stats.

Do you have a link to these stats? As at least one record is held during the 1982 spell (lowest observed grass minimum temperature was -19.6°C at Dublin (Glasnevin) on 12th January 1982) and low temps and people walking across canals etc was the norm then. Mind you I think the SW had normalish temps then.

Off to bed - was hoping to have snow by my 300th post, but no look. Maybe I should delete some old ones;)!

Happy snow watching everyone - with a bit of luck i'll wake up to 6 inches and drifting:D

The Cold Spell of December 2009 and January 2010

The very cold spell that engulfed the United Kingdom and much of Europe in the UK winter of 2009/10 had some very stark comparisons with that of the 1981/2 winter. In both situations, high pressure was stationary over Greenland. With the winds traversing clockwise around an anticyclone, this created the scene for cold air directly from the Arctic to be fed across the whole of Western Europe including the United Kingdom. One other stark comparison is that the dates and days were the same and that the date combinations of 2009 are identical to 1981 and also occurred after a leap year. Similarly 2010 is in an identical position to 1982 and this is repeated every 28 years.

Is this a longer cold spell than 82 does anybody know?

How long have we been officilally frozen solid?

    Found these online though...

Some of the links are broken here but it appaers '82 only lasted a week until it thawed.

As a Facebook group itself put it: When I'm old, I'll talk about the hard winter of 09/10.

Finally, a story to rival my grandparents/parents tales of times past!
