Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

NCB protection is another scam invented by insurance companies. Be aware if you do take it out it is only relevant to the company you are insured with. If you have a claim, other companies will take in to account this when pricing you the following year and increase the premium to reflect this. Your current company will "protect" your no claims, but they know you really can go nowhere else, so they can still quote you what they want, it is a scandal they were are still allowed to sell it

It's not compulsory and is relatively cheap. By your logic, the holding insurer could "scam" more money off you at renewal following an accident, by not allowing you purchase protection. They could increase the rate and wipe out your bonus.

That's not true. I lost 3 years no claims in 2017 because of criminal damage, the following year I renewed with another insurer because they were cheaper even though I was still missing 2 years no claims. When I have full no claims built back up next year I'm getting full protection.

I'm not following you. afaik your protected no claims is only with your current provider move insurer and you have a claim and no protection. If you got away with it great but I don't think thats the way its supposed to work?

I went from 6 years no claims ( the maximum) to 3 years in 2017 as I had step back protection. I renewed in 2018 (almost €800) on the basis of only having 3 years no claims with the same insurer as I thought I couldn't move. Come renewal in 2019 they were just taking the urine so I shopped around and got a much better price. I told them about the claim I made in 2017 and that it was settled no third party involved etc I now had 4 years no claims as was stated in the certificate of no claims from my outgoing insurer. This year I moved again with the settled claim etc.

    29yr old male
    1.6 tdi Golf
    8yrs NCB
    Fully comp

Liberty's renewal was lowered and good in fairness - €470.

Went with Zurich though - €426.

Zurich doesn't cover driving other cars which is annoying, that's 14euro extra but not something I needed.

Was offered auto renewal of 480 with 123.ie, about 50 quid up on last years policy.

Entered my details as a new customer and quoted 410.

Did the exact same thing last year.

    3rd pty.
Full clean licence, no claims, no points.

No idea how her quotes are more than mine (male, 29, 8yrs NCB). Have you tried adding an experienced named driver on the policy? Always reduces it for me.

Got a renewal notice today 2 months early up €60 on last years price it has gone up over €100 in 2 years for no reason
    BOI insurance
Bit of a cheek as due to covid crisis I couldn't drive the car for 2 months :-(
    Rip off

should have said 55 yo with 10+( in fact never claimed since starting to drive when i was 17 but can only claim for 10 years ) ncb current quote is €422 vw polo 1.2

Changed to the LS460 last week and my insurance renewal actually just came in today on it:

    2007 Lexus LS460
28 year old male in Tallaght
    10 years NCB
26 year old partner also with her own car
    €920 fully comp with 123

Small bit up from last year on the 530/Scooby but it is a 4.6l so fair enough.

Is NCB protection worth it or not? My take to date has been its an up sell, but I do prefer it when its included in a price (IOW I don't have a clue).

What is the opinion here and is it true that it can not be transferred from one company to another?

I don't want to engage in a bad tempered exchange so can I say first this is my experience and I happily accept if others have had different ones.

I had my no claims covered and had a claim. When my renewal rolled round it had doubled, I can't remember how exactly how high it went but certainly well into 4 figures. At the time I could not find any other insurer to accept me accept as someone with zero no claims. Make of this what ye will.

44 years old driving 2006 Corolla. All NCBs, no claims or points. Looking to get TPFT, homestart, towing and driving other vehicles.

Last year was €400 with 123.ie. Less €30 One4all voucher just received.
A renawal came at €470 and a new online quote was €590. Is rewarding a loyalty a new thing?

    The usual suspects:
BOI & AIB €700+ .... bankers don't do bangers, should have known
    Liberty, Axa, Kenco, FBD & Zurich €550 - €700
    25Plus and Its4Women very close with €420

Last but also the least AIG €360 fully comprehensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

Folks quick query at renewal time.

Have priced around and AIG are coming up trumps for renewal at €440/480 without/with NCB protection.

Currently with Its4women who have increased my premium over €200 for renewal but their new customer quote using a different email is €395 with NCB protection. On principle I'm tempted to tell them to GFT for trying to rip me off.

Anyone else doing good offers at the minute?

    -Need help-
    (possibly wrong thread, my apologies)

I have a 2011 Honda Civic LHD (yes, steering wheel on the "wrong" side) insured in my name, and wife as additional driver. Price (with 9+ years NCD) for third party fire and theft is €1067. (Last year it was almost €1500 so not too bad).

Now, I'm buying a new car here in Ireland (yes, with the steering wheel on the "correct" side), but also want to keep the LHD Honda insured until I can go back to EU mainland and sell it there (I did try selling it here, no luck) - what would be my best option? :/

I understand you can't use your NCD for two cars? and my wife has just 1 year experience here in Ireland as a named driver on my policy.

Got my “invitation to renew” from its4women yesterday. Similar to last year (550). Going to shop around and start with insurance companies that gave a Covid refund. Does anyone have a list of such insurance companies?

Quick question - my wife is going to make a claim on her policy, scrapped side of door, need new one. She has NCB protection, renewal later this year. If AIG pull the piss and increase her premium and she decides to move insurer, does she have to tell the new insurer of the claim? It won't show on her NCB cert, it will still say 10+ years....

Of course you have to declare it and the claim will be shown on the NCB certificate.

    Is this a serious question?.
You make a claim, move insurance company, deliberately dont tell them of your claim. They could and especially with the way things are, would refuse to honor any comprehensive claimand would also chase you for any 3rd party claim that they pay out. Definitely not worth it.
My wife made a claim last year had BP and her premium actually went down a few quid

We've never made a claim before so I don't know how these things work. But if she has NCB protection, why would it show on the cert? I'm not into making bogus claims or trying to hoodwink insurance companies. But she's just afraid that her premium will skyrocket now. If that's the case, what's the point paying of NCB protection. Guess we'll find out at renewal...

You will find out how much BP is worth if you ever have to make a claim and haven't got it. When I was renewing mrs O's policy a while ago the Las in the ins co told me if we hadn't got it the premium would have gone up bu @ €2k. Instead it came down @ €50/€60

recently because of covid we have been allowed take our work vans home (an post) ,so i drive my car in monday morning, and dont use it again until fri afternoon,so almost 4 days non use. my car is parked behind coded gates only staff can access,in a major sorting office,no public access. i rang insurance to tell them id moved address and wanted to change the details, they asked was this where car is parked overnight during the week,my new address is a rural address, and my previous was also rural, and hour between address, west of ireland.

so i told them about how its now parked up most of the week, behind coded gates,in a secure position held by a semi state company, with a lot of security. and she told me it would cost me an xtra 40+ euro to drive the car almost 60% less ,and during that time, the car is more secure than it would be when its parked at home. and they wanted xtra money off me ! needless to say i was flabbergasted and told her to check with her boss as this couldn't be right.

the xtra charge was because its not parked at my house.

said she would contact me in a day or so.

Why would you repay the claim? Isn't that what we have insurance for. And even after repaying it you are still being punished by other providers so pointless repaying it in my books.

Why would you repay the claim? Isn't that what we have insurance for. And even after repaying it you are still being punished by other providers so pointless repaying it in my books.

I debated at the time whether to settle privately but went through insurance to avoid any surprises later on ( probably over thinking it, and on advice of work colleague), on the basis as I understood it that it wouldn’t count as a claim. Then I learned that even informing the insurer of the incident counts as a claim. I wasn’t expecting to see the amount listed on my no claims bonus statement but it’s still there so you’re right, from that perspective I should have just let them pay.

However, my premium went down after this with RSA/123.ie, from 750 down to about 450 (for an 09 A6 avant).

I agree it’s a hard one to swallow RE other insurers but the pricing I got from 123 since was much better afterwards till I got the A7. I got a bit of a surprise with that, but I was told last year that 123s quote wasn’t that bad for this even disregarding the claim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,004 ✭✭✭Eggs For Dinner

Notifying your insurer of an incident is not a claim. It only becomes one if money is paid or due to be paid on liability. It's more likely alternative insurers are assessing the accident, which needs to be declared, whether you involve insurance or not

    54 year old male
Driving a Nissan leaf (2015) in Cork City. Parked on private property, wife also added to Policy (she has own car)
    Full NCB

Been with AA for a number of years
    Just got a renewal quote

“We'd love you to stay with us, so we've checked our leading insurers to find you the best price. Your Renewal Price €748.64
the annualised premium for last year would have been €582.18”

So basically it went up over 28%.....
My wife got 30 Euro back from her insurance and of course I got nothing so when I saw my quote I said sod that

Looked around -Comprehensive Cover-NCB protection-break down cover of sorts ...so same cover near enough for all

    Zurich €545.11
    123.ie €723.37
    Liberty €451.10
    its4women.ie €444.34
    AXA €510.81
    25Plus.ie €420.61
    AIG €385.79

Went back to AA and said that I am not renewing – they dropped the price by approx. 50€..FFS
SO going with AIG and wont be renewing my AA membership to boot (90 Euro), saving myself nearly half my money

    Shop around Folks
