Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Indeed...That here is this utter paradox of gun ownership on the island is the ignored giant woolly mammoth in the room.
NI, one of the few EU countries/regions [?] where concealed carry permits are somewhat easy to obtain, for self-defence purposes. Up to and including full auto if the chief constable deems it a necessity.
Pistol shooting, reloading, black powder shooting, semi-auto"rifle"* shooting making a comeback,IPSC not a problem.A larger amount of guns held in NI than in the 26...Virtually zero guncrime[excluding paramilitary/terrorist ]
Apart from silly things like registering magazines as firearms purchases...Which is on hold. Makes us look like East Germans looking at the bright lights of capitalist western Berlin in the 1970s down here.
*[More like pistol carbines or PDW style thingies]

    Down South
None of the above really...Except for the highest criminal misuse of firearms in the entire EU and the strictest gun laws in the EU now that the UK is gone.
Really wonder how our crowd would ever intend to square this circle? Esp as those concealed carries are were issued due to the risk of attack by subversives on endangered personnel,as the RUC/PSNI could never offer police protection to all involved.Wonder how all of that will fare out once we get the "4th green field "back?

On the topic of the above - Forgotten Weapons did a video a few months ago on Walther .22 personal defense pistols issued not to civilians but to off duty members of the UDR.

    Hi,

Is anyone going to try and run with any of the ideas / suggestions made on this thread?

While its been quite interesting to read parts of the thread, it would be a hell of a lot better, if something really positive, were to emerge from it.

    Thanks,

    G.

This will be a group AND individual job. Both are needed, but timing is important.

How do you think any approach will be viewed, now, considering the current climate and situation with covid, etc. We will not be laughed away but utterly dismissed.

Wonder how all of that will fare out once we get the "4th green field "back?

I've often wondered is that the loophole we have been looking for, granted its a stretch but I couldn't see some of the other crowd handing up their legally held pistols without a fight. A win for everyone.

Europe's Second largest lead mine is in Tara Mines Co Meath. "They dont cause any environmental damage to the locality".
No fear of them banning that.

I think it will be one of those directives, largely ignored when implemented, yes you will be threatened with a large fine or Jail time as per the norm, but in reality it will be the same BS as many other things in our society.

Nothing much was ever solved on a shooting thread on boards, yes a bit like in reality,.
I havent heard of anyone approaching their MEP DIRECTLY, as in Phone call??

You'd want to read back a bit, one lad here went out of his way to contact his MEP directly, Not interested in the slightest. All anyone seems to get back from their MEP is a standard email with the usual platitudes. MEP is a misnomer anyway, Member of the European parliament, its not a parliament, its only there to provide an illusion of Democracy and to rubber stamp whatever the commission decides, thats all. The real power is the unelected commission, which meet in secret, nothing is recorded as far as i know. Its like if our Seanad had the power and the Dail was a window dressing exercise.

It certainly is;but not at this particular moment in time. Reality has to slap them in the face first that once we get over the two-month-long hangovers, and finally stop singing a nation once again..we have to LIVE with and govern these people, and this will be one of many problems that will have to be sorted.
Like will the AGS have to become armed or reworked into a new 32 county police force? Just another teaser...

Won't happen like that. As it is unenforceable by such. We don't have enough NPWS/AGS to be out tramping the fields and foreshores with magnets to check our ammo. Once the blanket bans the production of lead ammo, it just becomes a question of time and dieback until we run out of lead shot or ammo.
even reloading will become a thing of the past, as you need totally different equipment to reload non lead ammo. If that technology doesn't make it to the civilian market...

    Found this webpage today.
Ok, it reeks somewhat of UK damp tweed with a bit of gammon...I quite like the format in that it covers the countryside from a country dwellers perspective.

So am wondering would this be a way to go with an online mag from an Irish perspective? Not just covering shooting and field sports, but also country life in general?

Every roof in this country that has a "valley" in it has lead sealing the valley, which the rain washes over before going back into the ground and the water table.
Would there not therefore be an onus on the Govt to also ban all lead on roof's, and bring out a grant scheme to retro fit alloy or stainless steel?

The next I renew my licence it will be my 52nd time ,that's how long I have been shooting. In the 70s I thought all was lost as regards shooting sports. when I see all the Rifle clubs and the pistol clubs/ clay clubs that are around today I am amazed how they managed to keep our sport going so strongly and fair play to all involved. There will always be issues regarding new rules on firearms and that's why we all need to stick together and I'll wait and see how our fellow Europeans address this lead ban

I’ve seen a post on FB in one of the UK groups about them setting up a religion called “Free church of country sports”.
I kind of laughed at it initially but it would be a good idea IN THEORY as every time something was done to stop hunting etc religious persecution could be claimed. Apparently over there the need 8000 people to have a recognised religion and they are pushing for it to be able to put it in the census that is due over there.
I’m keeping an eye on this as the vegan opened the doors with his court case saying veganism is a spiritual belief or some such thing but it works both ways.

    Cheers

We stumble across many weirdoes in our lives. It’s part and parcel of the interconnected environment within which we exist. In the pre-Internet era, green-inkers were relatively disempowered outliers who kept to themselves. They were Twitter-free curtain-twitchers and entirely Post-Office dependent. Nowadays all the nutters on the bus and spotty attic dwellers possess (literally) social media accounts. In 2021 ‘Care in the community’ translates as ‘on Twitter’ – lobbing insults at wicked Tories or piling on those unsuspecting, tax-paying corporations who refuse eunuchs a widdle in their ladies’ privy.

Take the likes of this poor fellow (below) who goes around town collecting rusty old screws which he then photographs and splays across the Internet. Today he actually has followers. Back in the day he’d be shuffling around town in a pair of manky trainers avoiding pavement cracks getting about as much public attention as a cacking pigeon.

As Editor of this magazine I receive some very bizarre material, some of which I delete for fear of prosecution – Mabel from Church Broughton, our ‘Dog of the Week’ feature ended last year, so please refrain from sending in any more pics of your grubby puppies. Still, I have never received anything quite so peculiar as news of the latest religion that is attempting to sweep across the country - that of ‘The Sacred Fox’ (peace be upon the ginger vermin).

What fresh nonsense is this, I hear you ask?

A (really silly) idea conjured up by some anti-hunt extremists who are taking zealotry to a new level by asking supporters across the country to list 'The Sacred Fox' as their religion on the national census form when it arrives later this year. I kid you not:

The new religion has a Facebook page here. And it seems the first fox disciples are busy spreading their good news and proselytising by targeting Christians:

No news yet on plans for a Sacred Fox church or temple but devotees have circulated a symbol of worship - an eerie mash-up of the Eye of Providence, a Malaysian flag and a Tamagotchi fox – no doubt bashed up during a Microsoft Paint class for beginners while nurse popped out for a well-merited ciggie:

The loons have even adopted an anthem (apologies in advance for linking you to this tat – yup, be forewarned, the musical equivalent of the M25):

“Ah, but you can’t insult a religion!” so the antis will chorus. Indeed, article 144 of the Penal Code makes it an offence to insult religions at either places of religious worship or during public religious celebrations.

    In this instance, stuff that.

Let’s face it, antis, your new religion is, err, barking. Was it not only a matter of time before your absolutism morphed into a religious form with the fox as your prophet and you as supplicants on bended knee before it? Your Satan - the Tory landowners protecting their evil chickens and brainwashed lambs? Your street stalls like Al Muhajiroun’s infamous trestle tables on Stratford High Street, promising salvation in exchange for a uniquely fringe and fanatical form of extremism.

The thing is that your religion, antis, though warped, is unoriginal. If you’d bothered googling fox worship before taking it upon yourselves to personify God’s word then you’d have stumbled across the Fox Cult of China:

For more than five centuries the shamanistic fox cult attracted large portions of the Chinese population and appealed to a wide range of social classes. Deemed illicit by imperial rulers and clerics and officially banned by republican and communist leaders, the fox cult managed to survive and flourish in individual homes and community shrines throughout northern China.

You could at least have given your new religion some much needed hinterland rather than going the problematic Icke route by promoting yourselves as a novel cuckoo sect. Why didn’t you think about using Chris Packham as your John the Baptist? (Any of the Country Squires would happily have volunteered to play the part of Herod). Fox basher Jolyon Maugham could have been convinced to be your Saul and you could have spun his newfound commitment as some kind of a Damascene conversion, showing him handing in his blood-spattered baseball bat to your fox-Pope?

But – putting aside the fact you are both deranged and demented - you might actually be onto something:

The fox, among many other animals, was used as a symbol of premonition in ancient Chinese texts.

After just a few seconds staring at your weird fox symbol, there was a crack of thunder and I experienced a premonition too …

The Sacred Fox shall indeed feature on the census under religion but will only be listed by a mad and pious few. Then the peoples of the earth shall unite and all point at you who remain faithful to the Sacred Fox, exclaiming, “what a bunch of wingnuts. If they weren’t already committed, they should be taken to the asylum yonder immediately and be force-fed coloured pills until they recognise that foxes can be a ruddy menace for farmers and that humans are the highest life form on God's earth.”

The firearms industries are probably all for a lead ban. All those old guns obsolete with the stroke of a pen, and new ones having to be bought. It was shooters i was thinking of, and their orgs in countries with huge populations like France and Germany.

The photo could be modified to be more palatable to a wider audience, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Realistically anything firearm related is only going to appeal to a narrow bunch anyway, and the more niche you get the smaller that appeal gets too.

Personally I glaze over when I see a bolt action with a camo job, or more traditional hunting rifles. ;)

I don't see anything wrong with sticking a flashlight(and yup that is what it is) on whatever you have, or a grip, laser, optic, etc, but I get the palatibility side of things.

No shooter I know of would have a problem with that pic in itself. The problem though is that we need to appeal to non-shooters to change the legislation. And those kinds of pics don't appeal to the wider audience.

I've no problem sticking a flashlight etc. on firearms, absolutely nothing wrong with that, but when you are asking for these guns to be allowed back for target shooting, you should put up pics of the most harmless looking yoke you can find.

You will get the hoplophobes getting an attack of the vapours and histrionics over anything remotely gun-shaped these days.So a pic of a black gun with a flashlight will make zero difference to those ones prone to attacks of the vapours.

My niece went to college, was reading the Guardian along with the Irish papers, started using funny language that was meant not to offend anyone, telling everyone about Thunberg, AOC and that beardy twit Corbyn and yes she became anti-gun. She decided to have a go off me for owning firearms, and when i asked her what the problem was, she had no real answer. Being anti-gun is part of the Woke, right-on package.

While in general I agree with your views Grizzly, a petition of any sort never mind one of this magnitude and significance needs to be done with a very high degree of professionalism.

Such a petition would need detailed input from various professionals with hands on experience and no doubt someone with a legal mind vis-vie firearms legislation in Ireland and knowledge of shooting sports history and the various court cases and their results.

To succeed, any such petition would need some form of backing from Local/National Politicians plus possible Olympic and other involved organizations.

For such a small country we have far too many small organizations all fighting for their own corner, all fighting for what little funding is available, end of day no one organization is large enough or has enough clout to have the laws changed.

    Just my tuppence worth.

Lead the change JP.We are all 100% right behind ya!:):D
Because as you know yourself, getting 25% of what you are saying there is a lifetimes work in the Irish shooting community.

Apathy, indifference,Fuddism, Me feinism, glacial reaction times by our established organisations concerned with this and the attitude of "keep quiet and maybe they will go away and leave us alone, and kill off anyone speaking out" will ensure what you are looking for there will not happen.

While misinformed and amateurish, it's worth more than 100 theorists on the interweb discussing fine campaigns planned down to the last detail, that won't survive Murphys 5th law of combat[and debate].

And the proof is here that it is doing something. We are talking about it on Irelands only[?] largest firearms board . Which is something I guess.
Although looking at the FB profile of the original petitioner,I reckon it's a spoofer with a fake profile. Very new and about 5 posts.
