Hasn't the original Resident Evil game been remade a good few times?

Just once, in 2002, but depends on how you define remake I suppose. It has been remastered and re-released multiple times but the GameCube one is the only one that is an actual remake from the ground up. This remake has also been remastered and re-released a few times itself.

With the rumours of Blue point doing a Metal Gear Solid remake, would that make it the most remade game, with Twin Snakes being the other remake of it?

You could make the argument that Goldeneye has had two remakes, but I think it is better that we just pretend these don't exist.

    Not even close.

Off the top of my Head Ys 1 and 2 have been remade multiple times. Original releases, The MSX2/FM-7 remake. Then the master system remake, PC-9801 remake, Famicom, FM Towns Marty. You have the Ys books 1 and 2 collection then on the PC Engine followed by a MS-DOS release and then a the YS 1 and 2 chronicles release that was on PC and PSP. And I'm probably forgetting loads.

Not too familiar with the Ys games, but yeah was looking for remakes rather than ports/remasters.

And I think I heard about them enough to know the pronunciation. :D

I guess Myst could be in this as well with another remake supposedly on the way

Seiken Densetsu (Final Fantasy Adventure) has been remade about 5 times now, there were plenty of rumors since late last year of Sony buying Bluepoint.

I was actually talking about remakes, Falcom changed Ys significantly for each of those games and updated graphics and gameplay a lot. They love remaking the first two Ys games. They're pretty great games, the latest version Ys Chronicles is fantastic.

I even forgot a Saturn remake.

If I was talking about ports it would be probably be a contender there as well with all the japanese home computers it's been released on.

The first Final Fantasy would be another contender. Original release of Famicom, Wonderswan remaster, PS1 remaster, GBA remaster. Probably another I'm missing.

Ah, I knew were talking about remakes. Was just clarifying for the earlier post that I was too lazy to quote.

Tease for the new game from the Celeste team. Basically just a name (Earthblade), a poster and some glorious music (Lena Raine returns).

Bit of a wait still ahead though according to the devs!

I'd much prefer if indie developers didn't get on board the triple A industry's habit of releasing trailers that say nothing.

Well it's not nothing, at least the soundtrack is sounding like a banger.

Lunar Silver Star Story is probably the most remade game if we're talking full remakes and not just ports/remasters

Mega CD Original, The Saturn/PS1 Complete edition, the awful GBA game which is more a downgrade, and then the boring PSP version. So 3 remakes, not sure it's up there with remake factory Falcom :)

They are a lot easier to get now than they have been in the last few months, you still have to keep an eye out for one but at least you get more than a femtosecond to get it in the basket and finish the transaction.

I had a ton of fun with the original a few years back. I adjusted the energy drain in the config file so you can actually use the speed for as long as he does in the cutscenes. Can slightly adjust the other drains too.

Yea the hype around the graphics always overshadowed the fact that it is a good game. Nothing special or anything, but a fun semi-sandbox shooter at a time when they were very thin on the ground.

Loved Crysis back in the day.

Got 2 in a sale a few years back and gave up about an hour in. Not a patch on the original.

So which Monster Hunter do I grab for pc if I want to give the whole thing a go? Is one of them an MMO type thing aswell? I just want a decent SP game, havent played anything since RDR2.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,875 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Monster Hunter World is your only choice until Rise comes out and it's a good place to start.

Will make a change from RDR2, you'll enjoy playing an actual good game :pac:

Finally, Civ6 adds a feature that has been critically missed for years now; that ability to pet the Scout's dog:

I really liked that game but the military checkpoints were possibly the most annoying feature of any game I have played in the last 15 years. I just don't see what they point was other than to frustrate the player.

The game is also way too long. It's an interesting game but not worth finishing.

It was a good idea, maybe not a great game as a final product. Certainly its mechanics needed another pass or rethink; the malaria was a cute concept horribly executed, the checkpoints lazy and unfairly implemented - while the much vaunted fire physics didn't really have much impact in the moment to moment gameplay. It had a bunch of good theories that fumbled the implementation. it's a shame the game didn't get much love post release (and the engine seemed limited for modders to fix it themselves)

Is FarCry5 worth a go? I inherited a PS4 in December and slowly getting through some of the games I got with it. I'll add in I'm a complete novice when it comes to gaming but getting into it.
I've played Horizon, RDR2, Unchartered 4 and Lost Legacy and with a ton of other games it's hard to know what to go for next.

FC2 is such a deeply flawed game, but with so many great ideas that it’s by far the most interesting open world Ubisoft has produced in generations.

It feels like after it games of its ilk just grew more homogenous and unadventurous. Far Cry in particular disappeared down a sort of bland power fantasy route rather than the more abrasive, experimental approach of FC2. Perhaps Watch Dogs Legion was the true successor to FC2, given Clint Hocking’s involvement and its big concept thinking... but (I haven’t played it) by most accounts it wasn’t particularly good and couldn’t shake off the Ubisoft formula :/

And the enemies respawn at them. Another thing from the game I remember is guns jamming.

The biggest problem in front of ubisoft changing things up is that everyone moans about how derivative and stale they are and a month later ubisoft release farcry: snow texture pack and 11 million people rush out and buy it.

And even sony are doing the same with their formula with assassin's creed: japan getting praise and sales despite being even more derivative than even ubisofts output.

Far Cry Snow. Pre-order and you'll get a gram of 'snow'.

A bit of it with the brother. Enough of it to know it's not for me. It feels very derivative with some simplistic stealth and combat that's fine I guess. I feels very ubisoft. The side activities are very simplistic. Basically, I think the Eurogamer review was spot on.

I've avoided FC2 for years due to complaints about random weapon breaking, malaria and irritating respawning enemies. It sounds like a nightmare.

Like Silent Hill 2, it's meant to be an oppressive nightmare.

    It's almost a classic.

To be honest the weapon breaking and malaria aren't annoying. Malaria is easily fixed and keeps you on your toes and weapon breaking can be avoided mostly if you keep your weapons maintained. Picking up a manky rusted weapon on the battlefield means you are taking a chance with weapon malfunctions (it's very obvious when a gun is in bad nick visually). The biggest annoyance is really the respawning checkpoints and it being too long. It's a game well worth experiencing. You'll probably be done with it well before the end but that's probably a good 20-30 hours into it.

Naw, they're annoying. Not because the idea was bad but the implementation lacked polish and a think through. You can do "oppressive" without the game actively fighting you from having an engaging, entertaining time. Breath of the Wild did weapon breakage much better, even if I hated it too lol. But in that case, it insisted on the need to explore, fashion new weapons and be proactive in the world. With Far Cry 2 the game just wanted you to suffer, without any real reward for your toil (see the constantly respawning checkpoints).

There's a clear path to making the game again, only better and less like a tech demo; as it was released, it felt like a suite of disconnected ideas lacking a cohesive whole.

You’ll find very few people disagreeing about the problems the game has. For me the tragedy is that it sort of represents the end of an evolutionary track in big budget video games. The issues the game had could have been refined and the good ideas expanded on whether directly as a sequel or indirectly in a spiritual successor... but we didn’t really get any sort of follow-up to it. Far Cry 3 is infinitely more polished, but basically a theme park ride in comparison to the heart of darkness chaos of its predecessor. Almost all AAA games are power fantasies - FC2 made you feel weak and imperilled in comparison, and as far as I’m concerned that’s just as valid an approach to game design.

That said, you can certainly see some of FC2’s spirit in the emergence of survival games (although personally I find their thirst / hunger meters quite hard to get past). And FC2 itself definitely has a bit of a late 90s / early 00s PC vibe to it - peak experimental emergent sim era. But also striking how FC2 was very early in terms of the dominance and genrefication of the open world Ubisoft game, and how different it feels to pretty much everything that followed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭Robert ninja

FC2 is the only one I ever liked. I haven't really enjoyed anything else from Ubisoft in a looong time.

Anyone play Oddworld Soulstorm? Looked for a thread and couldn't find one.

Oh boy, am I disappointed in this game. When I saw Oddworld Inhabitants were the developer for this and not the Just Add Water crowd that did New N'Tasty, I thought "great! The OG's are back, this game will be class". Not the case unfortunately.

Like N&T, Abe still controls like cr*p, the animations are awful, the sound is still mixed terribly and the game is buggy as all hell. Really feels amateurish which is not a nice thing to say about the same developer who brought us Abe's Odyssey

Add to that there's a number of other things that I just don't really think fit into an Oddworld platformer: a crafting system (seriously?), Abe's chant has what I suppose you would call a stamina meter, a double jump, checkpoints (I know these are par for the course in modern games but they really don't fit in an Oddworld game imo), the level based system (more subjective but I don't like it).

I'd hoped this would be a return to form but man, I'm very disappointed in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

really the respawning checkpoints was the only big annoyance for me with far cry 2.

But I get why they did it, just got to look fat far cry 3 and later where while clearing the camps is fun, it rapidly removes the tension of travelling after you cleared enough of them.

Having the checkpoints repopulate kept the tension

but because it was such a badly implemented system it became less tense and just frustrating. They needed a different system altogether for repopulating the map then just reflipping the checkpoints.

Weapon degradation is an awful and lazy game mechanic. I first encountered it in System Shock 2 and there was so much outcry at the time, the patch included a config file to reduce it (and enemy respawn). That said, it kind of made sense in FC2. The malaria got boring fast though. They have been basically remaking Far Cry 3 for the last few years but you could say that about any number of highly regarded games these days. Far Cry 2 and Assassins Creed 2 were the last times I paid full price for an Ubisoft game apart from Fenyx Rising so they get what I think they're games are worth.

That's one of my biggest issues with FC5 and ND, everyone attacks you on sight. They must have amazing eye sight to recognise me regardless of what I look like or what I'm driving. It's not fun. Just like 5 (and 4 before it), I can't get into ND. It's all just very meh, and I feel like I've done it all before. 3 was the best, with Blood Dragon getting special mention simply for being awesome. Not sure how 6 will fare out tbh. The city could be interesting.

6 will be interesting. It's their chance to really mix it up and start fresh for new gen but i have a feeling underneath the serious looking story, it will be more or less FC 5/ND. FC 2 is the only game in the series i never played and really want to now with all the comments in here. I don't mind weapon degradation in games, one thing i can't stand is tailing missions whether it's on foot or in a vehicle. In my decades of gaming, i don't think I've ever played one tailing mission and thought "this is fun!". One actually made me quit Judgment and sell it.
