I'd say he has it hard alright.;)

Mike Murphy largely disappeared, having been very prominent at one stage.
Then there was yer wan that became the Barrister.

He has a new podcast show doing a series of interviews with Irish public figures.

I always thought it was a shame he didn't take over the Late Late Show when Gaybo retired. He was wasted on Wining Streak.

Mike announced he was ending 'The Live Mike', live, and on air, without telling any of the higher ups beforehand.

Gay Byrne told him he had pretty much killed his career.

After that, RTE clipped his wings. He probably would have taken over the Late Late, or gotten his own Chatshow on Saturday night.
Instead they put him in Winning Streak. And he was 'quietly' replaced when his health wasn't great.

    No option to return-just replaced.

And look what we got instead ....... Pat "the Plank" Kenny.

Pat was still a damn sight better than Ray D'Arcy, or Ryan Tubridy.

You wouldn't find Pat interviewing a high profile guest and going 'My wife think's you're GAWR-JUSS' like Ray did with that lawyer interview.
Or the rather infamous 'Jack Nicholson' impersonator incident, where Ray brought him on pretending he was the legit article.

Pat had to take a day off when his mother passed away (a very legitimate reason, I'm not mocking Pat). Tubridy took 3 weeks off with a man flu.

Remember that guy from Dublin who was in either the first or second series of MTVs The Real World circa 1992? It seemed a big deal at the time. Little did we know we'd go on to be bombarded with reality TV.

Vaguely remember him. Skinny, dark hair, piercings. Seemed a decent enough type.

Oh if we're going to give the media s**t for allowing an individual to triumph, look at how venerated the likes of Leo and Simon are, to name a few.

Leo we were told was this 'young, fresh, up to date' politician... oh, and gay too-to appeal to the woke crowd.

What he actually was was an old fogey in all but body. His opinions, his policies, his actions... he's more doddering and old fashioned than the supposed 'old' politicians he replaced.

That seems to be where 99% of presenters end up. I suppose rte want fresh faces from time to time so the old heads are shooed into production jobs to make way for the new ones.

A good number of people are not all that comfortable in the limelight or front of camera. They train up inhouse and go behind the camera instead. Far less stressful IWT.

Craig Doyle, he used to some type of Saturday night show once upon a time

Well, the real money is behind the scenes-production, formats and so on. Before the quarantine, it used to be a sure fire money maker.

(By the by, wasn't there an advert for some 'Ask Anna' type of reboot show? I remember seeing the advert, and then it disappeared. I'd swear this was before 2020. Did it not get any response? I recognised Anna's voice in the advert.)
I imagine Nolan quitting The Afternoon Show, citing 'didn't want to be talking about cakes' and then going on to 'The Great Irish Bake Off' probably miffed some of the higher ups.

Craig came into RTE when it was starting to get even more unprofessional. The monkey's took over the zoo. His ego took a bashing from all the s**t RTE put him in. But he's the narrator for that show with the Brennan brothers.

Craig was sort of like the Seoige's- not matter where you put him, he wasn't well liked.
He was also the guy who sent plenty of shows to the graveyard.

Well, Anna always seemed awkward in front of the camera (especially live stuff). I imagine she'd make more money behind the scenes, tbh.

Doyle is all across ITV. I used to see him in Dublin and/or Heathrow airports at least once a week when I travelled a lot to the UK for work.

He’s all still doing RTE work, he does the voiceover on a number of shows.

Doyle does a lot of rugby coverage for BT.

That "Secret Producer", that was leaking all the RTE stuff a couple of years back, alleged that Doyle was given numerous chances with awful shows by some Producer sort that thought the sun shone out of Doyle's arse.

Yeah, even Graham Linehan chimed in about that producer (The guy is also still employed at RTE, in entertainment).

Apparently the guy who loved Doyle was a total plonker. He messed around with programs in order to put his name on them, even if the show turned out to be utter crap. (It's why Doyle was shoved into the Panel, among other shows).
If his name wasn't attached to a show, it meant it was good.

IF his name WAS attached to a show-it was utterly crap. That, and, according to Linehan (someone I'm not a fan of, but this tidbit was interesting) there was no way you could get a response or an email from him. Completely inept at his job.
    But RTE kept him on.

Mia Dunphy the last I see of her was on Dancing with the Stars, she is reported to have split from husband Johnny Vegas ( says they never lived together) they reconciled and split up again

She was also on the Late Late Show launching her book about motherhood shortly after her son was born.

Blathnaid didn't like Sheana Keane, who eventually took a case against her. Anna just seemed disinterested.

She was in that 'High Road, Low Road' show there a few weeks back. I don't watch it, but it came on after some program, and I grabbed the sky remote and turned it off.

(Jake Carter was also on it).

No wonder her relationship didn't work out if the two were never together.

I saw a documentary about her, she was skyping JV, he lived in england and she stayed in Ireland. Think they met about once a month or so. Strange set-up, if you were serious about a relationship somebody would move and go to live with the other person wouldn't you think.

I remember she let slip she was a 'single mom' on DWTStaff. Which subsequently triggered Amanda Brunker to write an article about her.

Then about a few weeks after she got kicked off DWTS they revealed they'd split.

Thing is tho-she was JV's second wife, and his first marriage barely lasted 6 years (probably shorter when you take in the time of divorce courts).
It's a well documented fact that second marriages tend to always end up in divorce courts. (As do third and fourth marriages).

In short-if someone is divorced, they're not marriage material.

Anyone remember what happened to that guy Mark Mahon?

If you've forgotten, he directed one of the worst Irish films to ever open in Irish cinemas, Strength and Honor. Movie starred Michael Madsen, Richard Chamberlain, Vinnie Jones and Patrick Bergin. (The lead roles are meant to be IRish, but the only Irish actor he cast was Bergin). The film has a 6% critic score on imdb.

The film got absolutely panned in IReland. But Mahon was the type of guy who hyped himself up to the last-his next movie was going to be a 100 million euro film about Brian Boru, and he was saying Leonardo di Caprio was going to play Brian.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/graphic-novelist-with-a-100m-movie-on-his-mind-1.1413662

An absolute lick a**e by all accounts- put Morgan Freeman as a 'thanks' in his last (only) film. Freeman had no involvement in it.
Name dropped like crazy, seemed to be his biggest fan too. Took credit for 'ghosting' on films (scriptwriting) but, of course, 'couldn't name them'.

I met him once at an IFTA thing for Neil Marshall about five years ago, and I tried to stop myself from bursting out in laughter at the sheer ridiculousness of him.
He spoke in this ludicrous faux-American accent, like some country and Irish obsessive. I presumed he was an American who had been here for a while.

I remember he posted on the day of Lauren Bacall's death a photo of him with a woman who he said was Bacall, but was clearly Barbara Bain from Mission Impossible and Space 1999.

Jesus, what an idiot. He sounds a right plonker. God...starting to wonder if he credited Morgan Freeman, but might have been talking to Nelson Mandela.

I believe he swiped the name of the film from Gladiator. 'Strength and Honor' is Maximus motto in that film.
TV3 used to show it, got about 15 minutes of it once and I've sat through some crap movies,

I think my brother got stuck watching it one night. Absolutely dreadful.
The movie had plenty of one star reviews.

I remember Michael Madsen and Mahon were interviewed by Tubridy... and Madsen demoe'd his 'Irish' accent.
It was not good. No matter how Tubridy 'tried' to spin it as good.

(There's an interview on the official fb page, have no idea what the show was. But they show clips from the film... and honestly. the clip they show of 'Mammy' made me burst out laughing... it's sooo bad and over acted. The end of the interview-aiming for a Summer shoot with his next film-this interview's from 2007/ 2008 or so).

    https://www.facebook.com/StrengthandHonourthemovie/videos/97207596397/

A friend of mine did a few short films that came out in film festivals. Knowing the trials and tribulations of getting scripts, funding, finding a director, actors, and so on, his opinion of Mahon was 'total faker'.
That's not a real movie is it!?

Sadly, it is. Co-stars Finbar furey, Pat Shortt, and many 'that guy/ gal' Irish actors.. No major names, tho.
I think Mahon benefited from the Celtic Tiger 'economy'-as in it was all false successes, where money was thrown at people, even if the end product was s**t. Round the time the film came out, the Tiger was slowly dying. (Nobody told Mahon tho-in 2013 he was still touting his own ego).

It says a lot that TV3 only showed this a few times. They (VM1 now) repeat 'Watermelon' (that s**te Anna Friel tv movie) every 6 months or so. And they used to be addicted to repeating the TV movie 'Two against Time'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,319 ✭✭✭George White

He was ludicrous, a la NiallToibin in Eat the Peach, as the faux-Texan showman.
I was forever thinking, "is this guy for real?"
    He sounded vaguely Elvis-esque.

I liked Craig Doyle. Loads of reasons TV shows fail and his success abroad proves he has talent. Don't know why the producer is being criticised for persevering with him. Lots of celebrated TV wouldn't have happened if a producer didn't stick to their guns when things seemed not to be working.

You can like Doyle. But the issue with Doyle was that he's a sports person, first and foremost. It's where he started, it's where he's suited.

When he got to RTE... they liked him WAY too much... so they put him into shows where he was not suited.(Similar with Grainne Seoige, but they got her on a budget-she'd fled sky News Ireland after it sank and burned').
If you're doing 10-15 minute segments, that's fine.

But if you're trying to host a hour or hour and a half long show, where you have to be 'on' for much longer.. it can expose the cracks.
RTe spent a LOT of money on him. They put him in Craig Doyle Live, Live Tonight with Craig Doyle, some show like 'Hanging with Hector' that I forget the name of, The Social and The Panel.

He didn't connect-even his 'Hector-like show' he described as 'sh**e'. (And, as RTE secret producer noted, the people on his show messed up the 'hashtag' on the first episode of The Social)

His tenure on the Panel was the final nail in its coffin, though TBH it had been on a downward spiral for a long time.

His tenure on the Panel was the final nail in its coffin, though TBH it had been on a downward spiral for a long time.

It was running on steam after 2 series. Ireland just doesn't have any 'celebs' to keep a show like that going.
The show started in Australia, where there's a plethora of people, and talent.

Over here, it's 3 episodes before they bring on Twink or Samantha Mumba.
