He had a sign saying "only living writer in the waxworks museum"

A shame you don't see him on tv anymore. The last time I remember him appearing on RTE was on Kenny Live (or Saturday Live, whatever it was called then) around 1991/92. Even at that point he'd dropped off the public radar a good few years. He was reading out some of his poems and when he got to one he said "every time I read this I get an erection" to which Pat Kenny gave an audible gasp.

He's not always nice to people on the street.. I don't get the rose tinted appeal. Mercurial so and so.

I've met him and he was nice.

Niall Toibin is retired I'd say. He must be well into his 80's. Frank Twomey still does panto and the like.

My bad. I thought Niall was pushing up daisies.

He has had severe mental health issues through his life, it's part of the reason he withdrew from mainstream media.

Oh damn, really? That's really sad. Understandable in hindsight.

I'm open to correction on this, but I think he even did electro-shock therapy

I remember hearing that somewhere all right.

He did. He wrote a book of poems about it titled "Was it good for you too Doctor?"

The kindest thing to do by the media is not to cover him in the media. Its easier for himself, his family and general public. But who are we kidding? dignity and mainstream media have never met.

True, but whenever it comes to mental illness or bad health, it's 'point and laugh' mode in the media.

He's sort of lucky-compared to nowadays I mean. Imagine if nowadays he tried to withdraw from publicity, he'd be followed everywhere.

i've met him a few times. And I have to say, I was genuinely frightened by the man when I saw him on the Dart. I don't want to say much, but it was quite sad. He wanted my email to communicate, trying to get me to join the UFO society in Boyle.

He must have gotten a good reason. His daughter Sighle was tutor at my film course, and three years ago, she told me didn't do interviews, and was retired from public life.

Hes a gentle soul really... to be honest, I'd say he was much more scared of you than vice versa.

Same story with Sinead OConnor and Mary Coughlan, any time you hear about her it is usually followed by a breakdown. These sort of people (BiPolar, Schizophrenics and other vulnerable people) have enough trouble to be dealing with in their own lives, they dont need to be the focus of media attention. They are only cheap fodder for filling lines in tabloid journalism.

David Hanley who presented an RTE face to face interview programme called Hanleys People in the 80's. Very hard to find out any info on him because if you google him you get a load of results for Vincent Hanley.

Type in a minus symbol adjoining the word Vincent, that might work.

What ever happened your man O'Gorman who used to go round doing vox pops on the street? Remember, he used to wear a silly hat and could be quite obnoxious at times.

He's on the Sean O'Rourke show on RTE Radio 1 at least once a week!

I think Hanley retired, similar to Cathal MacCoille.

With Sinead, it's very different, I think. She sort of does the Marian Keyes thing, like using her depression to call attention to herself, then actually hiding her real issues. Sinead for example was supposed to have had a 'breakdown' when really it was because Arsenio Hall was suing her for ten million because of callous lies. She also hadn't paid her taxes, and so had a bill of €166 000. I think she does more damage for mental illness than good, tbh.

I was thinking more along the lines of Britney's breakdown. When she shaved her head, it became a joke.

I never listen to the radio anymore but I used to see him on the tellyyears ago and he seemed to just vanish. He is still at the vox pops?

He does, specialised vox pops, of sorts.

Reports from outside local courts and asks about the circumstances of the people attending. Interesting stuff too, people do open up to him, he has that sort of quizzical, 'caring', voice that people react to well.

I always found something slightly creepy about him, especially the way he interacts with young women. There's something about his voice and the way he dresses that screams sex pest. Wasn't he on some reality show years ago and had some aggro with Kevin Sharkey?

How dare you remind us of Celebrity farm!!!!

I think nobody ever came out well out of RTE's forays into reality television round then. Celebrity Farm, Celebrity You're a Star, Charity Inside 252, Treasure Island, Cabin Fever and the The Dinner Party...

You always knew the types on these shows-and the absolute misery inflicted on everyone. (Treasure Island was fixed, apparently. A lot of shows were round then-even Dara O'Brian said one of the shows he worked on would be 'rigged' for the more liked family).

I don't know if you heard this but just like Love Island, Channel 5 is rebooting Celebrity Farm.

Different show-that was 'The Farm', no relation to the RTE show 'Celebrity Farm'.

'Celebrity Farm' was famous for being the most painful things RTE has ever produced.

'The Farm' is most famous for Rebecca Loos masturbating a pig.
