And, I would guess similar to the new Play HDMI Sync Box that was released, it can only light one colour at a time, making is considerably less effective. The tv's display several colours at a time each side of the tv.

Set up hue stream today on the nviada shield and it works excellently, now I must try convince himself we need another light strip.

In out little 70m2 cottage we have
    8 bulbs
    1 sensor
    4 switches
    5m light strips

Might not sound like much but every room has 2-6 smart home gadgets and he's not one bit interested in any of it!

    Hey

Can I ask a few questions....

    1. What light strips did you use?
    2. Does it work with Netflix from the nVidia shield?
    3. Does it work for two sides and a strip on the top?
    4. Does each strip show several colours at a time, or just one colour at a time?

Thinking of setting this up on the upstairs tv.

    thanks!

Sorry I might not have been clear. I don't have light strips behind the TV yet I was just using the ceiling lights to test, going to put a spare bulb into a desk lamp later and place behind TV (diy bloom) to test in the dark.

My current lightstrips are under the kitchen cupboards

I don't think it works with Netflix I was using it with IPTV and it worked well .

First time I’ve seen the garden floodlight reduced, 119.99gbp with the outdoor sensor on amazon deals of the day.

It's that time of year again, Halloween, I have a Hue bulb in the front porch with a motion sensor and I also have a spare strip as well as a Google Mini speaker, what would be the best setup for the kids? Ideally I'm thinking an app that senses motion so plays a sound and flashes the light, I'm thinking thunder and lightening.

And before anyone says anything, yes this is more for me than the kids :D

The Hue Halloween app is very good I find.

I had it set up last year and it stopped some kids coming up my garden as the lights and sounds scared them. It does exactly what you mentioned.

    https://www.argos.co.uk/product/2910875

You could get 3 or 4 smart plugs on Amazon for the price of a Hue branded one, if you can sacrifice the Hue app integration

Ya but the Hue integration is the key. I have 7 or 8 lights already and routines. It will be good to put the Christmas light on the same schedule and app etc

Get ones with zigbee integration, I have 2 that are not hue branded but still appear in the hue app, can switch on/off set schedules etc

I love this time of year I'm already planning how I'm going to scare the kids. Last year I hid a Bluetooth speaker outside and moved 3 colour hue bulbs to the outside light, doorway and front window, a hue sensor on the door and the hue Halloween app on a tablet. They've added a few new effects this year

    Meh,

I have a house full of Hue (50+ bulbs), at least half on routines.

I bought 3 G-Homa smart plugs from B&Q a few years ago and use them all only at Christmas, and they work great. It’s another app with routines set for each plug, but it works fine nonetheless.
Set the routines up when decorations go up, and turn off when decorations come down.

No need for this to be run through Hue.

My Halloween this year will be my regular Hue set up (entire house lights doing something) with a blue tooth speaker, but this year I’ve added a projector upstairs, and a smoke machine outside!
Also putting a bloom at the end of the garden lighting up a skeleton with headstone!!

Is there any use getting the haunted house one also?

Nice app, but it keeps randomly changing the lights it uses. It seems to change it to try to use whatever is on. I have 2 colours lights and 1 white GU10 outdoor that I'd like it to use.

    Anyone else getting the same?

It works perfectly for me, I'm selecting only 3 colour lights (of 12) and this year I'll also have a light strip. I tried it out yesterday evening and had no issues. You sure you've it set to only use just the selection bulbs you want (not them all), then it will move it's focus between these bulbs depending on what effect is playing

Ya I had selected just the lights I want but each time the app reopens and reconnects to the Hue Bridge it defaults to different bulbs.
I'll send a screenshot later once I'm back home

Last year I was working so had set it all up in the in laws as we were in between houses and ended up buying and are in our new home now.

I'm going to add to it next year but for now I have 2 strobe lights which can be set to flash colour or stay on any colour, hue throughout the house so all the front rooms will be flashing including the hall where there are two pendants from the ceiling, I'll use hue go and a stand up lamp too.

I've a skeleton in the hall which I'll place a light behind.

Looking forward to it and thinking I'll place the Bluetooth speaker in upstairs window obviously opened out.

I have a black light but it's locked away with more boxes where access is impossible for the moment.

I'm hoping to get a smoke machine for next year and would love the bride and groom skeleton....

I think the lighting will look cool though.oh yeah at the moment only one outside light above the door but it's hue also so will link it up also....

Working fine now. Must have been something going on when I first set it up, as the app was showing every sensor I have 3 times.

Pretty cool app. Planning for Thursday now :)

Is this hue white and colour bulb too exposed for long term use outside? I'm thinking of putting 6-8 bulbs in the eaves of the front of the house, but if there's a danger of damage from the weather I'd have to change the fittings, which would be a pita...

IMO, although sheltered by the eves, that's way too exposed

The newer version of the GU10 colour are more like regular sized GU10 bulbs and should fit in there and be flush.

Hi lads, apologies if this is elsewhere in the thread, I did try the search function after reading about it on the very first page of and thread incase there was some more up to date information.

Recently changed over to hue in a new build, thought I turned them on via the hue app last night but when we got home they were not on. Now I'd thought I'd made sure the relevant lights were still switched on before we went out (getting my wife and kids used to not turning the light switches on or off is proving painful!) And that is before I've installed 2 hue sensors :(

It doesn't help that hallway lights have switched upstairs and downstairs - any tips on how to get around this?

I thought the lights were switched off this evening and they were showing as off in the hue app, my wife flicks a normal light switch and they show as switched on in the app - is that normal?

Final q - do people mostly use the hue app or the google home one, are there pros and cons over one or thr other?

So basically when powered off by the actual electric switch it will show as on on the the app.

We had a power outage the other day and some lights turned on after some didn't but that night the routines were messed up and none of the lights switched on when they should have.

The next day everything was fine.

Thanks, will check again to see if they work when they should.

As for the dimmers, I'm not.so sure how that will go down. Do the light switches HAVE to be switched on at the wall for any hue app instructions to work? (That might be a dumb question sorry).

Leave your existing switches on so the bulbs always have power then control the lights with the app, motion sensor or the dimmer switches which allows you to even set different scenes with colours etc. You can also use Google home/Amazon Alexa

ask a simple question and get an answer that's going to cost a lot more than expected...

hadn;t planned on doing anything in the kitchen, but now i need 10 x gu10's, nore likely white only (in addition to the 3 large colour bulbs that I just installed)

3 of the new more regular sized for indoors, now that i know they'll fit those fittings

and 10 for the outside, ditto

there better be good offers for BF

If you automate Hue correctly, you should never have to use any app!

I don't use any apps apart from Halloween & Christmas

Most of the time if setup correctly you dont need any app. Lights in my hall and sitting room are on a schedule and kitchen/halls have sensors. I only really use the app to change scenes in sitting room and if something goes wrong somewhere. I use Hue App for this and Hue Essentials as well on Android. I dont use the Google Home app generally for controlling my lights, although I sometimes do speak to dim lights etc.

None at all, just you can use your voice if you link them. Create rooms, put your lights and homes into the relevant rooms then all you have to say turn on the lights and Google will know which room lights to turn on

Recently got an echo spot in the house and saw a back Friday deal for a hue starter kit and have a few questions

Would the hub need to be in the same room as the bulb ??. I can hardly have a bulb plugged into my light socket with the hub been downstairs plugged into the modem

I have a powerplug plugged into my smart TV through Ethernet with my modem downstairs. Maybe plug the hub into that ?

I have attached pics of my current non smart bulb and want to knw what style I should buy. The E27 Edison screw, B22 Bayonet cap or the gu10 spot ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,721 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

That bulb is a B22 (Bayonet = push & twist to fit)

The hub doesn’t need to be in the same room as the bulb, but with Hue, the more bulbs you have the better the coverage of the house you’ll get. Hue works as a mesh network, so the more bulbs you have the better the signal will be between all the bulbs.

My hub is in my front room under my TV and I have bulbs as far away as in the attic and in the back garden. Having about 50 active bulbs in total means I have full connectivity everywhere in the house.

Hub connects to your wifi router, bulbs can be anywhere, the range is pretty good and each bulb acts as a repeater, improving coverage.

There's a starter set on amazon now for £70 for three bulbs, the bulb you've linked is a B22. Are all of your bulbs the same?

am i correct in thinking that the GU10 Starter Kit is the older, bigger hue bulbs and the GU10 3 pack is the newer, smaller fitting bulbs? I need to order 4 packs of 3 and don't want to end up with the bigger ones....

Or is there a chance that the 3 for 2 promo might make a comeback next week?

you are correct, the GU10 starter kit is the older larger GU10 bulb.
the 3 pack on their own are the newer version GU10 which is smaller, and also richer colours (better green colour)

^ i raised same question on reddit, someone had issue with red color being off, and noticed that my GU10s actually dont have proper green its more yelowish, tested on different rooms, and seems e14s/ go light, have no issues with spectrum, a bit odd.

anyway today picked up kit on amazon for 83e for 3 e14s, but still need one e14rgb , would trade for gu10 hue older gen - never used, if anyone's interested meath area drop pm also got spare hub 2.1.
